From race to gender to profession to nationality, we define who we are in a million different ways. Many people feel strongly about those identities; they are a fundamental part of how we see the world, find community, and relate to each other. But despite good intentions on the progressive left, at what point does focusing on what makes us different from each other hurt our society more than it helps? When does a healthy appreciation for culture and heritage stifle discourse and deny mutual understanding?
On GZERO World with Ian Bremmer, political scientist and author Yascha Mounk weighs in on identity, politics, and how those two combine to create the complicated, contentious idea of “identity politics.” Mounk’s latest book, “The Identity Trap,” explores the origins and consequences of so-called “wokeness” and argues that a counter-productive obsession with group identity has gained outsize influence over mainstream institutions.
"I think the important thing is not to build a culture in which we are forced to double down on narrow identities," Mounk tells Bremmer, "In which we cease to build the broader identities, like ones as Americans, but allow us to sustain in solidarity with people who are very different from us."

Is this the experience of most university students? YES. I've attended 3 at various levels. At one, a med student was expelled for questioning a diversity speaker while flustered. Also a black activist felt empowered to say there were too many white people in the multicultural student center (formerly a normal hangout spot). At another, the president had to put up with lecturing by activists making aggressive demands. And at the last one, less than half of the white girls identify as straight, with fully 20% non-binary or trans.

These are PRIVATE institutions, protected by the CONSTITUTION. They're going to discriminate against anyone they please, and you and your government have nothing to say about it. (The people feeding you anti-woke nonsense have precisely ZERO interest in fixing the source of your complaining.)

The current moment of reflection on these policies is understandable and warranted. At the same time I hope we can stay focused on the goal of making our open society a place where everyone can thrive.

Brilliant. A balanced critique of the fallacy of woke.

By presenting this as a Right versus Left debate, Ian is perpetuating the same simple-minded and ineffectual approach to the issue that permeates the media. But it's not merely Left verses Right. It's sanity versus lunacy. We only hear about the Left/Right debate because they're the loudest, most obnoxious voices. But there are other, more subtle voices who see both the "woke" agenda and its opposition as dangerous extremes. And I'd wager we're in the vast majority. We just want to live our lives without being told what to say, how to think, or how to raise our children. We're sick of being called "haters" whenever we push back against the identity lunacies of the "woke" warriors, and we're sick of being called "communists" or "groomers" when we push back against the bigoted manias of the culture warriors. We want all the lunatics to, frankly, go to hell, and just leave us ALONE and let us live our lives in peace!

@@TWE_2000 You are quite correct! I have my disagreements with Bill, but for the most part he represents the sane moderate ground on most issues.

The problem is that it is a left-right dynamic in terms of voting and political action. example...."Anti woke" in the US context is an identifier for being a republican voter/trump supporter....if you don't believe me, just listen to any TPUSA, trump rally or desantis speech...
@pcbacklash_3261
@pcbacklash_3261 6 месяцев назад
@@davesmith4110 Everything you say is certainly true. However, Ian -- and, it seems, everyone in the media -- presents the issue in those terms ONLY, and it's much more complex and nuanced than that.

We all just want to be left alone? Are teachers leaving our children alone, or are they pushing trans/gay ideology on them? Or feeding the puberty blockers? Or telling white kids they are responsible for everyone's problems? You seem to be simplifying the argument.

It is possible to be several things at the same time, and all of us actually are. Identity is not one thing. Also, being gay or lesbian does not make you 'liberal' or whatever the term might be. There are many, many, deeply conservative gays and lesbians in America, as there are deeply conservative Blacks, Chinese, LGBTQ+, Latino, disabled, etc, etc, people in America. People become like the society around them is, and the vast majority of Americans are conservative, right wing, and conformist, so most Americans are conservative, right wing, and conformist. Also, in America the default identity is straight, white, and conservative, and when people like this say identity politics is destroying us, they are saying that non straight, white, conservative people are destroying us. In America white is still normal, and non-white et al is abnormal, and abnormality is a threat.

Your premise is flawed. Just because immigration, the economy and spending may poll as the top 3 concerns of Republican voters doesn't mean that trans rights, CRT (and DEI for that matter) are not major concerns. Any one of those 5 (6) issue can wiggle it's way to the top when current events prompt a push back to the unhinged left's antics.

@9:32 you make a claim that there are structural inequalities on issues like race and economic well being. But you fail to provide any examples of this statement.

This is a relatively short interview, probably with a lot of editing. It's unreasonable to assume there's no data just because it isn't mentioned here. If you've looked into this guy and found he doesn't have valid sources, that's another thing.

Two wealthy western white men discussing the flaws of _identity politics_ with an air of authority is flawed out of the gate. This is rationalizing cherished bias.
