Hello ! A few years ago I built a hoboker out of this IKEA part and I have to say it still works 100 percent to this day. Three nuts and bolts for the feet and 2 long nails as crosses. I am really excited. Sincerely Walter
Hey RV, Really nice cooking hack. I have those exact utensil containers from Ikea. Loved that you did a demo set to music. Keep the videos coming! Peace & Blessings
Great idea! Great minds... lol With my set up, i got a holder from Walmart and cut a hole above the bottom to feed fuel into, about an inch. Then I have a Stanley coffee press that nests inside. Depending on the size of the fire, I can adjust the distance from fire to pot base by using stainless steel tent pegs inserted through the other holes to create a platform to hold the pot. This also lets me use other stoves or Sterno candles inside that can be easily put out. (Often have fire bans where I live)
Hey Rv guy that is so Kool how that water was boiling , I need that set to put in my bag , that was awesome good job 👏 👍 well done . Thank you for sharing .
Hey RVGuy. That’s a awesome hack. Every one should have one of those. I’m definitely gonna use mines cut it and add it to my go bag. Great video bro 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
brilliant idea. the other benefit is because there is a larger surface area with the utensil holder you can fit more wood in there and also with the frying pan if you want a lower temperatre cook you can keep the flame further away with the taller utensil holder versus the other brand.
That’s so awesome! I think a bigger hole is needed, as said. But a hole somewhere in the middle might be an improvement - sticks would be lifted off the ground thus improving airflow, plus you could use it in either configuration if you wanted to. I plan on carrying a grill with these stoves so I might use the grill to keep wood off the ground and a piece of foil bellow to avoid ground moisture. My only issue with these is finding a nesting pot set.
You know you might be right if you put a whole in the middle to add the sticks it should work. Also, walmart sells a variety of cook sets, and so does amazon it should not be hard to find. Thanks for watching.
You were right! I’m not in the US and don’t have camping stores near me nor Walmart, but I found SS drinking cups in local supermarkets - in all kinds of sizes! They are traditional here in Portugal as countryside drinking cups from the olden days. Obviously they all have handles, which I had cut off and use a separate pot holder (so it nestles inside the stove). Very thin metal, so it only goes as far as boiling water, making watery soups and such - but paired with a tiny nonstick pan for eggs, and a grill that goes on the stove’s top for grilling meat - man this is perfect! Make a video on it or I will 😂 Ps: also made a DIY Kojin stove replica with a lotion tin can and leftover fiberglass insulation rope from my home wood stove. The rope soaks up the alcohol and doesn’t spill which is the biggest danger with alcohol stoves, and it slows evaporation rate a bit so the alcohol doesn’t just disappear in minutes. I use the lid as a simmer adjuster, just place it on the stove to cover up as much of the stove as needed to pat down the flame. Alcohol is nice for backpacking as it’s readily available in any store, and so it is also SHTF worthy. Plus, being unspillable and having the option to shut the flame off at any time makes it legal during some firebans AFAIK
I got a couple of them, and i even got the DUKTIG toy kitchen utensil set and toy cooking pots also from Ikea, the toy cooking pot with strainer nests perfectly inside the utensilholder/hobostove
Great video . Thanks for sharing. Try flipping it over. Build a fire in the Ikea basket then insert tent pegs into the holes at the right height to support your pot. That's similar to my mess kit. Good luck.
Hey, thanks for the advice. I have gotten a lot of views and comments on how to improve the little ikea stove, so I have decided to do an update video on it and the two other stoves I have . Thanks for watching.
Hey, RV guy I sent you a set of Arrow strap I think they can be used in a survival situation in your nxt video please let me know what you think of them and what you can use them for ...?????? Thanks 😊
I cut the hole in the IKEA kitchen utensil stand towards the bottom. I stick two stainless steel tent pegs through the top holes that makes it more stable. Due to the drought of the last few years i have used it most with the alcohol stove but it works well with both. I have it in a gas bottle pouch with the Mil-Tec stainless steel nesting cup and a small pan lid from the thrift store. The whole set was about ten Euro and nests together very well with another ten Euro for the plastic Nalgene bottle. The pegs and my Göffel i keep in the front pouch of the gas bottle pouch. It looks like the pathfinder bottle pouch but a lot cheaper to buy not cheaper build as it is meant for a heavier bottle set.
Are the lid and handles not hot, as you manage them bare-handed. Thank you for making the video. I really enjoyed it and want to try to make one of these stoves.
The lid and handle of the camping cup are made not to absorb heat , so you can handle them with your bare hand. Good luck with your project. Let me know how yours turns out. Thanks for watching.
i'd use it the other way up - cut a hole in the side near the base to feed in wood and then use skewers / tent pegs in notche or holes or a bit of SS grille over the open end? you can also use SS bolts to create 3 / 4 legs to lift it up above ground level to let air flow up & through
You need to fix the bottom a bit. When you put the titanium pot down you close all the holes on top. Draw a cross on the bottom by using the 4 raised nubs as endpoints, and the first place the line goes from one hole to another at each end of the lines, cut along the line. Then use some pliers to bend up the cut ends, Finally, round the edges of the tabs so that they don't damage anything. The tabs will only lift the pot about 1/8" or even less, but I expect it will make a difference. Also, I wonder if when you make the fuel opening, if you shouldn't cut the hole slightly higher, and keep the rim intact?
I do agree on keeping the rim intact, not on modifying the bottom. You can use/make a Steel mesh pot holder by cutting the desired length and rolling it up, doesn’t even need to be permanently fixed to a certain diameter, although that’ll help stability. Most people using this as a stove seem to use two crossed steel plates thst interlock to form an X, going over the opening to hold pots, or under the stove for airflow and to protect the ground.
@@pedroclaro7822 You're probably right about using a steel mesh. My suggestion was a 'no additional purchases' suggestion. A steel mesh cut to be slightly smaller than the bottom of this stove would pack down pretty easily, and the weight increase probably won't even be noticed, considering the stove is made from steel already.
Nice, but you left out one of the most important parts of the build. And that is how do you cut the hole for the door. I mean what kind of saw did you use, or did you use a high speed disk grinder with a cut-off wheel? I know trying to cut thru stainless steel is kind of tricky. Not to mention SS that is curved and difficult to clamp down securely. I like your idea here, and I'm probably going to make one for myself. But I don't want to fail by trying to cut that seemingly simple little door/opening by using various methods.
No cutting required. Just buy a couple of tent pegs. Poke them through the top. For an intro fire kit, hand sanitiser (with alcohol), cotton balls and a fire steel. Job done.
@@rv-guysurvivalchannel975 No bother. Made some for my grandkids years ago. Just screw some nuts and bolts through the bottom to lift it. You don't have to.
It is quite funny that a lot of Ikea crap turns out to be actually very usefull and handy, just not the way Ikea meant it to be 😂. Great stove, it might give a bit more consentrated heat if you covered one or two uppermost rows of holes with some sort of sleeve from sheet metal or correct size can. It would not be high enough to be a rocket stove but there could be some chimney effect anyway.
Utensel holder stove works pretty well. I picked one up a couple of years ago at Walmart, exactly the same, for just a couple bucks, before Biden economics hit. You can get a good hot fire in it.
I got 2 from Wal-Mart. I don't cut nothing, like a jet, I dig down to feed it. I start by putting materials inside the utensil holder, and flip it over. Once the fire starts, it's ready to cook. Inside the shelter, a clay pot helps heat the area.
@@everettplummer9725 that’s pretty smart, you thst way you don’t need anything else to hold your pots even if they nestle inside your stove. You will scorch the ground but who gives a hoot, biochar is fertilization lol
@@rv-guysurvivalchannel975 I don't know if you looked at my contraption. But I invented it to save charcoal.. Only one cup of charcoal can boil a cup of water first and then once burning well can cook a raw steak and sometimes you can snuff it for further use. The second burn is better for tender meats like chicken. But 2nd burn won't boil water unless there's 3 cups of used charcoal. The energy density of charcoal is on a par with gas or alcohol. And it's quite light to carry. I have made 3 grillers that nest like a Russian doll. I then use the smaller ones with sticks underneath to light up the charcoal. If doing a lot of grilling for the family the little ones are ready to prelight some extra charcoal. I recently went out for a weekend and only had a small bag of charcoal about the size of a big big bag of chips /crisps and I cooked 20 raw sausages and two fish and 10 prawns and still had half a bag of charcoal left. Worth a try
Ich habe den Besteckkorb auf eine kleine Gehwegsplatte geschraubt. Ist ein günstiges und schickes Terrassenfeuer. Zum Befeuern Stöcke oder Anzündholz .
What if…. Flip the holder upside down, load 1-2 inches of wood sticks, stick a couple of sticks or tent pegs through the side holes to trap the wood/sticks at the top. Then flip it over onto a small fire like you had. As the wood trapped at the top burned, coals would drop down into you base fire.
That sounds good also, brother. I have gotten so many comments on how to improve this little stove. I am going to take some of the ideas and do an update video. Thanks for watching.
@@rv-guysurvivalchannel975 To be honest, the utensil holder mod I thought of was different to yours, I have one from tiger tiger. But they are a great improvisation for wood stoves. Thanks for the entertainment, see you on the trail.
I do agree, I just wanted to try to make a duplicate one for my 3-day bag. The pathfinder nesting cup is inefficient, but it works. It's also very expensive. I didn't want to pay, so that's what I came up with. Thanks for watching.
The tiles are not burning bro if you look closely at the tile, there is still rubber adhesive attached to them from when they were pulled up from the floor. That is what caught on fire, not the tiles!!! So you are wrong, thanks for watching!!!!
Thanks for pointing out the many different ways you can make a little hobo ikea stove. My was was just to make another pathfinder nesting cup stove. But from all the comments I've gotten . With all the different ideas viewers have added, I've come to the conclusion that there is no right or wrong way to do this. I guess it's whatever works for best for the individual. Thanks for watching.
