Thanks Mark! I think it's awesome when people make their own stoves because of how much they learn about stoves in general. as far as I'm concerned the more people understand the nuances of how wood stoves work the more they will appreciate the Firebox Stove. I spent a full year doing basically what you did. Before starting product design I wanted to be sure I was starting in the right direction. I made rocket stoves, wood gas type stoves, and simple hobos all In different shapes and sizes. Observing wood fueled flames in so many scenarios gave me a wealth of information as a foundation for the design of the Original 5" Firebox Stove. Mentioning difficult burning condition is so important. high elevations cold temperatures or damp wood changes the dynamic of how a stove Burns drastically. Not to mention wind. I wanted a stove which would perform well in all safe burning conditions. Of all my stove designs the 5-inch Firebox works the best acrost all conditions. Some technique may need to be adjusted such as fueling the stove vertically to draw more air and or graduating to smaller diameter sticks to create more heat. Sorry to ramble, your video and the comments inspired me I guess.

Hi Steve. Your "ramble" is greatly appreciated. It was in part because of one of your early videos where you show how you started testing different designs that I began experimenting myself. I have nowhere near the knowledge or experience you have but enough to appreciate what you were able to achieve with your designs. I am looking forward to the long awaited titanium version. 27 mins for a stove comparison vid? I’ll make coffee and breakfast while watching. ... ... wait, the video is done? I was very close to buying the Firebox but I'm a projects man and frugal ... I'll be making an Ikea Hobo Stove - there is something satisfying about using something you created. Thank you for a most excellent summary of the two and their operation!

Excellent comparison. In defense of the firebox in terms of burn rate, I believe that you did mention that you can flip the "ash" pan over and insert it up against the bottom of the burn chamber. That will slow down the wood burn rate which would make it more comparable to the ikea burn rate if not even better. Also in defense of the Firebox, the way I generally use it is to split a larger round piece of wood into quarters. In use, those quarters are each turned 180 degrees from their natural position and dropped into the stove so the the 90 degree angles on each of the quarters are in burn chamber corners and with the rounded side toward the middle. With this type of wood arrangement I get quite a long burn rate especially with the ash pan cutting back the air flow from the bottom. All in all I thought the video comparison was very well thought out and well done as usual.
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 5 лет назад
Hi Lonnie. I agree with you on ways to get more from the Firebox. I had hoped to show that there are a great number of ways of using it that would determine burn rate, etc. I have used the two methods you describe to great effect. Thank you for your kind words and for commenting

Great video. I use an Ikea stove exclusively, and a friend of mine has the Firebox. I have respect for the Firebox, but for the price by itself, let alone the accessories, no thank you. Him and my son had a competition, boiling water, and cooking a chicken in pots laid horizontal on top. They were the same results. Neither one out did the other. Compactness? You still need a pot of some sort for the firebox. Like your set up, my pot nests in the Ikea stove, so put that pot with the firebox and you are pretty even. As I said, I respect the Firebox, but I really feel that it doesn't out do the Ikea, especially for the price. I have cut off skewers, a piece of mesh screen, and the siege crossmembers, and a small grill all inside the set up, and I can switch between the grill and siege set up if I want or need to.

Great video! It's always good to see that even the "home made" items can perform in the ring. I did laugh when I saw the title. I've had a Firebox gen 2 for a long time and have cooked many a meal on it, grilled using wood, pellets, lump charcoal, run alcohol in it. It's by far the most versatile, roughest stove I own. Heavy as all get out, but you can put a cast iron dutch oven on it and not worry about it collapsing. I didn't believe that the Ikea could hold a candle (Still don't think so..haha) but it did perform admirably. Thanks for sharing this with us.

It was Taiwan where the wood is always wet and we don't have hardwood 😄 Yeah, I almost wanted to cry seeing how close the stoves came in the burn test. For me it's day and night, Firebox takes maybe 5 mins to a boil once I have some ambers built up supporting a fire, for the Ikea I might not even get a boil at all. But very interesting to see your results, thx for this!

I like the concept of the IKEA stove. It would be easy enough to make a wider one from a stainless steel pipe. That would counteract the rapid cool down effect and it's disadvantages mentioned at the end of the video. As a backpacker a metal cylinder has an appeal for protecting things like a bag of charcoal / dried food or housing a pan/flask water bottle. Great video 👍

You're a bad influence, Mark. After viewing several videos on the Firebox, (I was about to design another folding stove), I ordered a Firebox. The Firebox is an investment but it will last you multiple lifetimes. I have often said, if I could have only one stove it would be the Firebox. Now I have the titanium version and it addresses the weight issue nicely but is considerably more expensive. The Ikea strainer is fun to play with and no end to the possibilities. For me, using a camp stove maybe twice a year on a motorcycle camping trip, I use a small canister gas stove and also have and use 2 hobo stoves, this one you show and a smaller one. That is more than enough for me. But, if I was hiking and camping on a regular base, say at least once or twice a month, only then I would consider the more expensive stove.

John, you can use the conduit clamps, but you can also use spade thumb bolts and wingnuts and lock washers and washers. You don't have to drill holes if you use 4 feet which is a little more stable. I use the holes in the bottom and the appropriate size bolt setup. The beauty is that you can rotate the feet and put them under the container for storage in a sack. I like the Walmart ditty bags that are (3) for $5 to put my stove in. And you can use the different size bags for different size stoves. With that setup of thumb bolts, wingnuts, and lock washers you can tighten the legs in or out. Another neat idea is to cut a couple of holes in the bottom across from each other so you can put long pieces of wood in stove. See Survival Lilly's video. Lastly, you can use a 5" stainless Oatey shower drain from Lowes. It has 4 little tabs on the bottom. Bend them vertical and it fits on top PERFECTLY. You can also use the stakes found at Walmart. A pair (or 3) of the cheapest metal stakes in the camping area can be inserted at various heights and you can then support different fuel options such as an alcohol stove or maybe those fuel tablets. Another neat way to make a pot stand on the top, and one I like better is to get a chicken grill beer can stand for a grill also sold at Lowes and bend the side down on each side of the stove so that the ring sits on top and then get a stake and pend it to hold the two sides that have been bent down and flattened and bent in such a way that the top is held on. If you look up the Fancy Feast Cat alcohol stove and make it the right height you can transport that with you to make a highly versatile and inexpensive stove. The Oatey shower drain is about $5 3-5 metal stakes are about .50 each. The thick round stakes that are about a dollar each will also work in the stove. Depending on your design. The stuff sacks at Walmart are $5 for (3) so you can use for a couple of stoves and/or have leftover sacks The beer can chicken grill stand can be had for about $5 Tape a piece of paracord to the bottom of your BIC lighter to secure to the bag drawstrings with it handing on the top. And, the feet cost abput $7 for (4) 3/4? conduit clamps, (4) 1/4? lock washers, (4) wing nuts and up to (16) flat washers depending on how you want to do it. And, I made the small stove and was able to fit a small round tin combustion kit in the stuff sack with the stove. I love this little versatile stove because it is easy, there is no setup, and because something like a Stanley set will nest right in side of it. I like to take this out when hiking for the day. I also like to keep one filled up with dried wood, some cotton ball and/or dryer lint and some processed and full size fat wood and put in a stuff sack with a lighter in my truck so I always have one of these stove.

So far the only thing I note is that it can warp a tiny bit. Does not affect setup or use and acn be bent back easy enough. Extra care need to be taken when using it is hot as that is when the metal is most malleable. The weight difference justifies the cost to me. Thanks for commenting

Excellent video!! Now for a bit of a shock comment!! It is now July 20 so a bit more time and usage of these twig stoves has been experienced. Apparently there is a slight but common problem with the Firebox that has been seen over time and that has to do with the rather tiny hinges of the Firebox. After a number of hotter burns the thin wire hinges are not fairing so well. They are eroding and changing shape at a different rate than the rest of the stove. This is causing it to be difficult in opening and closing. The panels are seizing up. It is also said that some users are cutting out some of the side panels to create more airflow. If loading wood using the designated ports at the bottom the time to create a greater burn is much longer. The hinges on the Bushbox XL are more robust and of a different design so as not to affect the stove functionality as the stove wears over time. It is also recommended that large burns are not really what these type of stoves are truly intended for. They are really meant to boil up some water for a hot drink or to use for dehydrated meals. Not to be used to cook up steak dinners for 6 or to use as campfires. Here is what is peculiar. I heard this all from one of the owners of an outdoor camping store which is very popular on the web and at their actual store. They also mentioned that they heard that Firebox is not likely to survive after the summer 2020. Anyway I just thought I would put this out there for everyone. I don’t own any twig stove but if I can I think I am going to purchase a Bushbox or possibly a Firebox if I can find one. I am pretty handy so if the hinges screwed up the operation I’m confident that I could somehow do a repair. Probably go with a Bushbox however! Just sayin’
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 4 года назад
Wow. I had not heard this before. I have not had that experience with my Firebox either. Although, I have not had more than 50 or 60 fires in mine as I have too many stoves. I also have the Bushbox which I agree is very robust but has a few downsides as well. I will look into this more for my own information. If you can provide me additional references to these complaints I would appreciate it

So I'm sure you were expecting to hear from me on this one! 🙂🙂. So I have a couple comments, but I'm glad, on the whole that you did this. So first, since it's only a stick stove, I don't really care if I use a little more wood, so I think they should be stuffed to the max. They're just sticks, it's ok if it uses more, so long as it does what I want quickly. UNLESS it's one of those super annoying stick stoves that are a pain in the ass to keep full. The firebox has a large top side port to feed, along with the overlapping side ports. That's one of the reasons I fell in love with it. It's so easy to keep running. I never use it like you do btw. I build a little bonfire, then use the side ports and just keep sliding them in. I love it because I can control the heat to a degree. I hated the stick stoves I used before because I had to keep taking the pot off to feed it, and same as with your last comment. I used to sit in front of a stupid smokey tin can whenever it was damp, and the firebox is a million times better. I also use it for two people usually. It's a bit of overkill for just one person for a day, unless it's winter. I do love that you made a super cheap stove though. I get a kick out of you showing we can make a perfectly usable stove for a couple bucks and a few minutes work. I chuckle at every contest.
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 5 лет назад
Hi Jim. I know I did not do the Firebox justice in showing what it is truly capable of. The idea of using the same amount of wood is just to control a variable. I will likely do other videos showing the true capability of the Firebox. I agree on the small stoves or others that require a lot of attention to keep burning well. They are more work than they are worth. Thanks for commenting
@jimf1964
@jimf1964 5 лет назад
@@MarkYoungBushcraft Dont get me wrong Mark, I see your logic in using the same amount of wood, and if you did it my way, you'd have just as many comments the other way around. I was just sharing my personal point of view on whats more important based from some frustrating past experience. Fuel efficiency only matters if you have a stove that sucks to keep fed. its only sticks after all, but many that you test do fir into that category, so its all good. as for doing it justice, with all those videos of baking muffins, to grilling steak, its pretty tough to "do it justice". to me, the best part is the ability to control the heat with the overlapping ports. good video over all. You just asked for some input, and I gave it. I dont suppose you have acccess to one of those gasifiers with the fan built in, and charges batteries too ( I cant thing of the name) do you?

I:d personally be interested to see someone like you try to run it in real world conditions. I know it would work with dried wood, but real forest material? I will admit, I had the BBQ attachment, and that rocked. It was like a mini BBQ, that I could take to the park, but as stove, on a damp day? No way.

A very good review. I know nothing about the Ikea but I have been using the Firebox for the past two years. I agree with your findings and opinions on versatility. My other stoves, gas, solo wood stove, etc have been put into retirement by the Firebox. It is just so bomb proof and handy. When I can't get wood or I'm too tired/cold to look for fuel the Firebox works superbly with a Trangia spirit stove inside. The height of the spirit burner can be easily adjusted using a pair of firestick rods, supplied with the stove. This feature, along with the way it folds flat for transport, can burn all types of wood in several configurations, durability, etc makes the Firebox an essential for any regular camper in a temperate region. Expensive but worth every penny.
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 4 года назад
I agree totally. When you look at versatility and fuel savings by not having to buy gas/alcohol, the Firebox becomes much more justifiable to purchase. Now, I just bought the titanium version and it is much more expensive although half the weight. I am just beginning to test it out. It is not for everyone but for those who can afford it (I used my RU-vid earnings) it looks like the perfect stove

I don't know why anyone would use a 2+ pound stove for a Trangia, unless they are in their backyard. If I wanted to use a Trangia I would just bring the series 27 or 25 stormcooker, they are less weight and include 2 pots and a pan and are designed for the Trangia. The Firebox is great wood stove, but all the'features' are pointless. I bought mine for the features but really only use it to burn wood, for everything else I have better much lighter options.

In defense of the Firebox. In the real world of car/truck camping and backpacking you will know the difference between the two when you bump those round stoves bend them even a little. Then all of the accessories just don't fit. In its flattened state the Firebox is nearly impervious to the hard knocks of tossing backpacks into your truck. In fact, you can sit on it and nothing will likely happen. You just can't beat the engineering which has gone into the Firebox stove.

Interesting video. For a medium sized wood stoves they are to me equal in cooking performance. As seen in your burn videos. Pre loaded with Swedish style wood, charcoal or pellets they performed identically as a burner/stove. My preferred fuel is lump charcoal. I also use a trangia burner in all my wood stoves especially the IKEA. I prefer it for cooking generally. I let the lump turn gray before putting a pan it; much the same as Steve of Firebox does on his stoves. Add the appropriate sized pot to either stove/cook kit and they take up the same space in your bag though I prefer a frying pan but I don’t go far and if you want what only a pan can do you take one regardless. You never said how the firebox perform better other than folding . I have been collecting small camp stoves for over ten years. Alcohol,gas and wood. I own several wood stoves including the IKEA and the solid Bottom Emot gasifier stove (Solo Scout Titan knockoff), Emberlit, and Bushbox essentials pocket stove Clones as well as several of the Chinese originals. I would buy a mid sized Firebox. One Between the G2 and Nano. We have a few minus 32 degrees days. The IKEA preforms well here in Georgia Winters so I can’t compare it to to colder climates. I don’t go out to play when it’s around 32F degrees or below. Though I don’t own a Firebox yet, It looks like it will do the job as stated. At the end of the day if you put a (properly prepared) fire in any of them they will all accomplish essentially the same thing {Cook Food}. There are so many equally capable stoves on the market that one could be happy at any price point. IKEA scores high in that regard. At $2.50 (U.S) in stores the IKEA next to a used can hobo stove is arguably the best bang for the buck stove available and would last longer than an old coffee can hobo stove. For me cooking food is the reason I use any stove. Boiling water is a far second. I want solid food when I’m out and about but then again I don’t rehydrate food and don’t walk ten miles to make it. I use my stove Fishing and car camping like Steve of Firebox fame does. He does the food thing too , I haven’t seen him doing Mountain house. I am interested in the New Modular Firebox Kickstarter stove. If it is sized between the Nano and G2 I’d be very interested. Overall an interesting overview. Thanks for sharing your comments and observations. Cheers!!

Cheers from Atlanta! P.S. side note; I purchased a new gasifier stove recently on Amazon that is a Solo Clone. It’s sized in between the solo lite and the Titan. It is virtually identical to the Solo Stove/Bushbuddy offerings except it has holes in a solid lower level instead of the wire. Unlike other Chinese gasifier stoves this one has a solid floor base just like the Solo stoves. The reason I have been singing their praises is their price. I bought two in the last two month’s. One for $19.99 and the other for $23.99. The quality and workmanship is looks identical. It’s just the right size for the solo camper who wants to accommodate a 9 or 10 inch frypan on the appropriate type of excursions. Like short day hikes car camping, boat-canoe/kayak camping etc. I have not burned either yet. Just had an operation on my throat in October with complications to my vocal cords from nerve damage. I’m fine. I’m on the mend and hope to be totally back to normal in the couple of weeks. www.amazon.com/EMOT-Stainless-Portable-Backpacking-Traveling/dp/B093FWM3QZ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8. I would like to see a comparison between the nano G2 and the ikea one. And try with trangia in all too. One of the big problems with trangia and similar is the preheat times. Especially in cold weather. Another is wasted heat running up the sides of any cooking container (cylindrical). I also thought about burner height (wood or triangia). Neither stove allows for on the fly adjustment to maintain that 1" height or adjustable temperature once lit. Perhaps get a 20 quart SS stock pot and place each in one of those stoves in it to slow down heat loss? And it would slow the wind too (alcohol stoves easily can be blown out by the wind). May even help in cold weather by reducing wasted heat during preheat. Adds weight so probably not that good for backpacking. But stationary camping it might work well, or even in the back yard? Would be interesting in trying lump charcoal and briquet charcoal in each too. Firebox is good for 4 people or so. Nano good for 1-2 people, more if you have lots of time on your hands. Ikea should be big enough for 4 people. More fuel surface area = hotter burn. Less fuel surface area = longer burn. How much soot does each of your stoves put out? Some complain about the time it takes for cool down. I suggest while they cool down, wash some socks. Clean utensils. Relieve yourself? CLEAN UP THE CAMPSITE? If SHTF, you can always use a little water (or even pee on them) to cool them down quickly.

I thought the cost was very reasonable considering all the accessories that came with it including a large 3 qt. Billy pot. What kind of “oil” do you use to keep that firebox tip top? 🙏🏽

Most commonly I use olive oil. A thin coat and wipe off the excess. Thanks for commenting

I don't know why I have had so much trouble making those cross pieces for the Ikea stove.

I am using stainless steel rulers I buy at Walmart now. They are cheap, easy to make and don't melt. Thank you for commenting

Good question. It is the real Ikea as it is stamped so on the bottom. I have picked up a few copies as well. Thanks for commenting

Do you or anyone have a link to the ikea strainer and pot? Looks like it would make a nice pot of coffee.

I just checked the Ikea website and can't seem to find them. I still see them often at thrift stores. Hopefully someone else can help with this

Hi Mark I have been mulling over making an IKEA hobo stove and like your idea of clamps for the feet. I was wondering what would be a cheap alternative for a pot stand and then noticed that we have vertical stainless toilet roll stands that when cut down would be perfect. They have a round base with concentric stainless “wire” circles - the upright ones that hold the toilet rolls in place could be cut off - one could be bent over to use as a hook to lift a pot off (maybe with some insulation) I would cut a couple of notches in the stove to hold the pot holder in place. I think there are a number of variations that could have different uses but without be able to send you a photo I hope that this makes sense. David B Western Australia
