Right, so story time. I watched this vid around a year ago and I was like, “yeah, that’s cool” and didn’t ever think about the 500 in 1 game cartridge ever again. Fast forward to today. My neighbor calls me cause she needs me to babysit her kids. By the time I get over, she’s already off doing her errands and her kids are waiting. I notice on the table a box with a picture of an nes on the front. I’m like holy shit that’s so cool, I haven’t played an nes game in years. So I ask the kids and they say they just bought it that morning. These kids have never played a video game btw, so they don’t really know what an nes is. But I do. So I open the box to set it up, and the thing’s so small it fits in the palm of my hand. Upon further inspection, I find that it’s called the mini game anniversary addition entertainment system, 620 in 1 games. Nothing about Nintendo at all. Perhaps naively, I think “oh it’s probably legit, I doubt my neighbor would have anything too shady”. I ask one of the kids where her mom got it. Her answer: “a guy.” So I set it up, press the power button, what do I see? Contra 1 Contra 2 Contra 3 Contra 6 Contra 7 Contra 8 I press contra 1. Contra 1 through 12 show up. I go back and scroll through the other 620 games and find Mario 10, 12, and 14. Select Mario 10. It’s kung fu Mario. It isn’t until I find fruit pig that I realize it’s the same fucking thing. Now I’ve been sitting here for the past 3 hours watching these kids play illegal knockoff video games and being completely fascinated with the experience. It’s the exact same thing but in a different package. Interestingly, the UI is a bit different, probably because of the limitations of the cartridge as opposed to a dedicated mini console, but it’s exactly the same games. Like pika chu was there and everything. So I’m guessing what ever company makes these knockoffs mass produce them in as many different forms as possible, and throws them online for anyone gullible enough to buy it. The packaging did look pretty old though, so it’s possible this was done in the heyday of the nes and my neighbor just happened to find someone selling what they thought was an old console. Regardless, this has been a fucking weird day.
