Today I am joined by Dr. Emma Cahill Marron to discuss the Spanish monarchy and its impact on Tudor court. Emma and I cover a lot of turf in this episode and we somehow began talking about Anne Boleyn too - you never know where the conversation will lead!
I even got Emma to discuss the "did they or didn't they" debate with Arthur and Katherine!

Awesome Dr. Emma. I would love to know what the England monoarchy thought about the appearance of Our lady of Guadalupe. December 9 to 12, 1531. The shrine in Mexico City is the most visited catholic shrine in the world.

For the people, of these times, salvation was important to a level we cannot understand but death confessions are reported and are not going to damp your soul. Evan Anne Boyelyn did not damn her soul.

Of course, people in the sixteenth century were all extremely religious!

People's piety and belief in being honest about their salvation is why I know both Katherine and Anne were telling the truth about their innocence.

Good Morning! I love these talks especially about Katherine of Aragon! I was under the impression that she fasted a lot believing that that action would be favorable to God and would give her sons. I am wondering if you and Dr. Emma could do a deeper dive into how her faith may have played a role in what happened to her children? What happened to the household of Henry Duke of Cornwall after his death? What do you think happened to him? (I am under the impression his death was due to SIDS) Was Katherine of Aragon given a dispensation to not fast during her pregnancies?

Thank you ladies, really interesting and enjoyable as usual. I’ve always thought that Catherine was a virgin when she married Henry. I may be wrong but I’ve always thought she was far too pious to lie about that. I think, to her, her immortal soul would have been in peril. Even Anne Boleyn swore an oath to say she was innocent of all charges because she also feared her immortal soul being in peril. It was very important to them at the time. I’ve often wondered if there was something wrong with Henry but, so little was known back then about reproduction we may never know. 🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺

I think it was just a coincidence. Pregnany and childbirth depended on pure luck.

Exactly, salvation was key! The afterlife was the eternal reward so you could not put that in danger!

Dr. Emma is back! YES! I was a fence sitter on the "Did they? Didn't they?" argument. I understood both sides, and agreed with many points while disagreeing with others. I think Dr. Emma finally pushed me into Catalina's corner. And yes, please do an episode on poison. Pretty please! Edit to add: when can we get a Dr. Emma book?

Henry VIII was a monster there have been plenty of women throughout Europe and in history who were leaders and rulers he easily could have got over his self centered myopathy.... So glad it was Elizabeth who took over

Fully agree Anne didn’t know how to play her role. She didn’t need to be raised a princess to know this, she had Catherine herself as the best example as well as her years in France in the court of Queen Claude. So many people say how clever she was but intelligence is about handling life and situations. She didn’t seem to understand that her behaviour needed to transition from mistress to queen. Also if she had been so smart, she would have watched her words with other courtiers and not taken “courtly love” flirtation too far and would have also not deliberately made an enemy of Cromwell. Challenging the king publicly was also not very smart. I think she is very much over-glorified.

Yes, she could have done things differently, but we all react differently under pressure. My concern is about how people are not always aware of the pivotal role played by Queen Catherine of Aragon to give agency to women like Anne Boleyn. I'm so glad Rebecca is giving me this opportunity to vindicate her trailblazing work!

@@DrEmmaLuisaCahillMarron me too! You’d are so right. Queen Katherine deserves a much better rep and so much credit should go to her. I feel she and Mary I have been dealt a very unfair hand since their deaths (and in life!). Thank you both for all your work and for sharing with us
