Hello, I’m bonsai mentor Milton Chang! Today, I talk about the importance of repotting, which is one of the main steps in starting your bonsai’s journey to become an heirloom. This a quick walkthrough of a repotting so your tree can grow new and healthy roots and so the trunk can thicken. By cleaning out the soil and trimming the overgrown roots, we are getting this tree ready to grow into a beautiful heirloom.

sounds logical. You want good root structure first, then a good trunk usually follows. Branches are a final thing.

Great review of repotting, but especially about “training” and promoting how the root system can be trained for bonsai. You mentioned that TIME is on your side in this fantastic living art we enjoy. Looking forward to the followup videos on this tree.

Thank you. Great info. Could you do a video exclusively on roots? I collect yamadori and there are a LOT of roots. My initisl goal is to get the new tree to SURVIVE. How do I accomplish this? Aesthetics is secondary. I would benefit from distinguishing feeder roots and structural roots. Which to remove. Soil, rooting hormone, pot size, watering, time of year, after-care - focusing on the ROOTS and survival. (As opposed to creating a bonsai) Love your videos. Saskatchewan Canada.

You should not worry if you have a lot of roots…Keep the roots moist at all times and use soil with good aeration. Do not work on the tree until it is actively growing.

Hi Milton! I have read that when it comes to repotting/root pruning, the timing of the year is very important. I don't think you touch base on the timing very much in this vid for us beginners. Is there a specific time of the year that you recommend to repot? Thanks!
@bonsaiheirloom
@bonsaiheirloom 11 месяцев назад
From a low risk standpoint, the best time to repot is late fall and early spring. Although, you can repot at just about at any time of the year if you keep the tree hydrated. That is, remove plenty of branches to compensate for the root loss, and keep the plant out of direct hot sun to avoid moisture loss. For beginners, I recommend repotting during around spring time.

Thank you for more lessons. Would you use the mosquito mesh on a Picea Abies in an oval pot about 12" long, or is it too small to need it? I'm going to repot it in the next few weeks. Thanks in advance!
@bonsaiheirloom
@bonsaiheirloom 11 месяцев назад
Please do so! It prevents roots winding around the bottom to make it less repotting necessary.

Hello! I have not done any European pine, since Japanese black pine has proven to work as bonsai. Like all pine, cutting about a branch that has growth to redesign the tree should be fine. And if you want to be really careful, cut off the top in stages. Hope this helps!

That tree looks sick. You took an older pine and basically bare rooted the tree. not sure i would do that. throwing the tree on the ground to remove soil was also a new method ive not tried before. finally, personally i try to not grab older pines by the trunk to help protect the delicate bark. There are a lot of local bonsai clubs in the Bay Area where you can learn how to grow quality trees. I'm sorry if my post seems critical. Some of what I hear you say and do is quite contradictory to my bonsai teachers. It's fine to do your own thing but I don't think one should claim to be an authority on a subject unless one carries the skill and experience to consistently produce quality. When I see people giving questionable advise it's probably not bad form to acknowledge that it's a deviation from best standards. Happy growing, Mats H
