@@SlipKnot7866 nah it's more than likely a marketing term used so they don't slander smoking or vaping directly so they can't be sued or anything like that. it's more for quitting vaping than smoking, hence the flavors. one thing I don't like about it tho is the fact that it's w a y more expensive compared to the habit itself.

@@iso_pixel oh wow that's kinda wild. Yea I always understood the "why" they do it, but it just comes off so... corny? As far as the habits themselves, I was a long time smoker and then vaping blew up and the short term answer a lot of doctors were coming to was that the damage of smoking vs the damage of vaping was so substantial that if you're currently a smoker they advised people to switch to vaping since you're eliminating so many carcinogens from cigarettes. They added in the "obviously don't smoke period" bit but it was nice to hear how much cleaner it was and thats when i decided to try that route to quit period. I still vape here and there, but it's always 0mg or 3mg of nicotine and it's more so to keep from getting fatter than i did initially because the subconscious hand to mouth motion from smoking when you are quitting you typically gain weight quickly

I'm not reading all 500 comments to see if this has been noted, but she wore her nursing shoes for a hike because not many athletic shoes were manufactured in women's sizes in the 1950s. Another wildlife bio here - copperhead bites are RARELY fatal. Should you screw with them? No, don't mess with snakes you can't identify (and don't harass wildlife in general). However, copperhead bites, while medically significant, are not typically fatal and treatment/antivenin is readily available at basically every major hospital within their range.

As a woman who's been married and out of the house for 8 years, I tried to run from my father 3 times. If I had gotten lost trying to run I would have absolutely lied after being found, so he wouldn't abuse me after I was sent home with him. I find myself lying to this day to avoid "getting in trouble". Abuse will make you do crazy things, it changes the way your brain works, if you're scared enough you'll hide till you're more afraid of dying. I was thinking the reason why the searchers “never heard her yelling” was because she wasn’t. If she was actually in the woods as long as she was she was probably scared and malnourished, causing her to mildly hallucinate. She may have thought she was yelling for help when she really wasn’t due to lack of food and water, on top of exhaustion
@mlisaj1111
@mlisaj1111 3 месяца назад
Could be…many people in videos about being lost in the wild recount a time they hallucinated an approaching rescuer. But searchers may also just not have heard her. The wilderness is big and yelling seems loud, but can often not be heard as well as we would think. Most have us have been in a house and yelled for a family member to come up for dinner, or whatever, only to have them say they did not hear, despite being just downstairs, etc.
@1112-m6p
@1112-m6p 2 месяца назад
I mean it doesn't even take that much exhaustion or any hallucinations to think you were yelling for help. You ever been tired after you wake up, got up and got ready for the day and then realize you dreamt that all up and are still in bed? There's a good chance she was tired and drifting in and out of consciousness, herd someone yell but fell back into that half asleep state where she thought she yelled back.

Another continent but the story here rings a bell to me. The timeframe is close as well. I had a really fanatic elder in the family whose diagnosis turned out to be paranoid schizophrenia. They were, among other things, out of family contact for several years doing ’Gods work’. Not even immediate family knew where but possibly out of the country. If a sizeable religious sect is decidedly harbouring one of their own and moving them around say three scandinavian countries, it is impossible to track down an adult who has gone out of their own will. But I digress. Regardless of diagnosis this line of events seems plausible to me.
@KaeYoss

theory - her dad might have said no to visiting the carolinas because of his upcoming tour. curious about the possibility of her intentionally leaving, traveling to the carolinas - to be with her “friend”, who talks with a level of knowing and intimacy about Evangeline that makes me think they could be more than friends. They stay together for a week or so then she makes her way back, her dad camping out on the highway to try to spot her on the return if she later informed him she’s alive and will come back. I couldn’t agree more. Everything about this story screamed that she was a lesbian who ran away from home and regretted the national attention. That’s why she communicated through her extremely close friends and neither of her parents, and if she had a history of fasting it wouldnt be hard to get a friend to drop her off back where she was lost after she fasted for a while to get her weight down and look gaunt. Also explains why the one family would have been weird about reporting her properly, she could have rode with them and told them not to tell where she was and they thought the better of it later.

Her being a closeted lesbian with a fanatical preacher father in the 1950s south, Ms Davis being her lover(thus the “I know her better than anyone“), and them spending a couple weeks together while she was “missing” explains every aspect of this.
@freyafernon7585
@freyafernon7585 2 месяца назад
I was thinking this! It explains so much, including the sightings of her hitchhiking to Memphis and leaving on a bus (likely to go see Ms Davis) and a reason Evangeline would have lied and given a half-assed story of staying in the woods the whole time.
@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078
@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 2 месяца назад
@freyafernon7585 Exactly. Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought this😂 In fact, I thought thats where the story was going with the way he teased a “massive plot twist“ and once the weirdness with Ms Davis being sort of spiteful and saying she knows her better than anyone. It brings logic to a story that seems completely illogical on every level. Especially considering the extreme cultural dynamic someone like that would have felt in the 1950s south.
@mime514
@mime514 2 месяца назад
Except the weight loss? And how everybody took into consideration that she would have traveled to her friend, so it’s weird that if she was there nobody would encounter her during Mrs Davis interviews and so on. And what about the husband of the friend? Wasn’t he there? It’s an interesting theory, but it raises more questions than answers.
@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078
@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 2 месяца назад
@mime514 Thats a fair point about the weight-loss. But the thing about the weight loss is thats 100% subjective. Its not like they weighed her before and after. They just threw a number out there. Whereas there are certain things that are not subjective.. She was missing for 3 weeks She had no food with her She was alive She was oddly healthy Her clothes weren’t worn out She had zero explanation for where she was for 21 days. Literally zero. It also accounts for the odd dynamic with Ms Davis. They met at some Bible camp. And now she just happens to be in the woods at same time when she happens to go “missing”? Saying things like “no one knows her as well as she does” in a spiteful way. And if she would “make sure to tell people if she was somewhere else”. I disagree that it gives more questions than answers. Its kinda the opposite actually. This theory accounts for by far the most factors in a story which on face value makes no sense at all. But obviously I’m not going to sit here and pound my fists on the proverbial table and say I’m definitely right. Odds are I’m probably not right about all of this. But I do think there’s a fairly decent chance that at the very least, the bones of this theory may have some validity.

@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 I genuinely think you’re onto something…it was around her birthday and she was still “missing” on the day of, maybe she wanted to spend some time with her secret lover to celebrate. Her father could’ve secretly known the sightings of her hitchhiking were true, maybe had a gut feeling she was actually visiting her, but didn’t want his gay daughter to bring “dirt” on the family name. He moved camp up toward the highway to scope things out, hoping that it’d be disproven, despite knowing that it was probably true. Also explains why he tried to get their attention back on the park and not other places.

To me" decided to leave the woods" could just mean that beforehand she was wandering around with the goal of finding her original trail or finding her dad or finding the searchers and at that point when she " decided to leave the woods" she simply changed her goal from trying to find the people who were looking for her to just walking until she is out of the trees and happened to find the trail in the process. I know I've done that before gotten turned around while walking through a wooded area And there's definitely a difference between wandering around to try and find the trail you were originally on and picking a direction and walking in a straight line until you are " out "

I think that maybe this is just a case of an odd person lost in the woods. I don't trust the newspapers as much as you do. I was a reporter for a bit and after a while I was just asking questions to get the gist of the story and listening for good quotes. Once I thought I knew what was going on and I heard some good quotes, I was out of there. Also hills, valleys, trees, wind and humidity can do strange things to sound. I think it's called acoustic shadows. So, I don't put much stock in the 'she should have heard us' stuff.

That is not correct. Six day a week delivery has been typical since the 1860s. By the 1920s, Saturday delivery was everywhere. Many towns, in fact, had 2 deliveries a day, 6 days a week. Mail moved by train, so it was on a dependable schedule and it would not save money by not delivering on Saturday. Rather, it would cause congestion and gum up the works. Parenthetically, the system was very efficient then. In the late 40s, my father lived in Boulder, CO and my mother was in Chicago. If he posted a letter by 4 p.m., it was on her desk at 10 the next morning. Sorting took place on the trains.

I'll take any chance to nerd out about my field hehehe. The snake imitating a copperhead is an example of Batesian mimicry! An animal with no other defense mechanisms evolves to imitate the coloration or sound of an animal that does, usually venom or bad taste to predators. There's also Mullerian mimicry, where a venomous/bad-tasting animal imitates another venomous/bad-tasting animal, so a predator only has to have an encounter with one species to avoid the rest. The one he described is probably a juvenile ratsnake. Great video as always!

Hi Aidens! How weird to find a random woman in the mountains instead of the woman you’re searching for. As for why wear nursing shoes, I was a nurse 20 years and I can tell you those shoes have to be comfortable for all the walking we do. It could have been that she was wearing them because they were comfortable. The father’s name would have been William, Wm is the abbreviation for William. Evangeline may have been trying to escape her father if he was having a violent episode. All the reported sightings were not helping. BTW, my birthday is also June 11th. 😂 Evangeline was definitely acting oddly when she showed up. I hope this wasn’t a publicity stunt. If so, they wasted a lot of people’s time and resources searching. It sure sounds fishy to me. The tips from the so-called friends who knew her are suspicious to me. Weird. 😳😒Thanks for the story. ❤
@johnnyboy2537
@johnnyboy2537 2 месяца назад
The idea that she was hooking up with Evangeline is the idea that makes the most sense to me. Especially with her odd relationship with her father where she both loved him but would obviously keep that sort of thing private and the language that Evangeline uses when talking about her. They hooked up but wanted to keep it private and probably got lost on the way back. There's a lot of general weirdness in the situation and the idea of her surviving on her own without food obviously doesn't make sense. It also sounds like she's trying to deflect from the questions at points and downplaying what happens. I generally dislike theories like that but it doesn't make sense to me otherwise.

Okay, as you were talking, my brain ended up in a similar conclusion. Her statements after and being very confusing makes me believe she made stuff up on the spot but then didn’t remember what she’d said before. My only other thought that is different from yours would be that she was seen at all those places but that maybe she was trying to secretly hide a boyfriend or lover or something. She ran away to be with that person, but before doing that she left a trail in the mountains and outside it to confuse people. Spent time with said person but did contact her dad to tell her she was fine and sadly he probably was unhappy but figured he could use it as a publicity thing before his tour. It’s all very bizarre but all I know is that I highly, highly doubt she was lost in the woods that long. Thank for yet another fascinating video guys!! ✌️💛

The ONLY thing Paulides emphasizes in this case is her supposed state of 'confusion' after being without food for so long, and ONLY if you continue reading on, you will find this is a 'recurring theme'. I think if any of us went without food for this long, we'd be a bit 'confused, and we wouldn't need a book to tell us this. I think it is totally reasonable that people are looking too far into some of her statements. By saying she screamed her lungs out but also didn't have the energy to shout when she heard rangers coming by, it's possible that what she meant by screamed her lungs out is that she had been previously screaming before the search and have lost her voice. It's also possible that her saying she had decided to come out was just another turn of phrase, like imagine there were some days where she was too weak to move but that last day she decided to get moving. You might say the reasoning she gave is strange, about starting work, but when you are desperate, energy starved, etc weird things can be sources of inspiration. Not saying there wasn't some sort of hoax involved, but her simply being lost for that amount of time seems reasonable and her statements seem odd on the face of it but they can be rationalized without too much effort.

Dude, I love your show. You are a great investigator. So this all makes perfect sense to me. I'm a registered nurse, and for 26 years I've seen people in terrible circumstances, and how they try to naviagate them. Dig this: She's on a trip with her religious and mental health dad. She gets tired of it, she snaps, and makes an emotional decison to bale and hitch-hike (or something, anything, to get away from her dad. in emotional decision-making, all logic and reason goes out the window) her way to first somewhere, then changes her mind possibly and decides to head somewhere else. Human beings are fragile. Exhaustion, lack of nutrition, dehydration all contribute to her emotional storm of confusion and unsureness about where to go and what to do. No doubt she changed her mind a time or two when deciding what to do next. But at the end of the time she was lost and exhausted, she finally just gave up and perhaps decided she missed her dad after all and just wanted to down-play everything and get back to normalcy. Further consider just how many details in those articles may be wrong, through clerical error or simple miscommunication. I think there was no mischeif on her part; conspiracy, no weirdness, jut a young lady who got frustrated, ran away, and then got tired and missed her warm bed. She's actually very lucky to have survived all that!

Finnish folklore has what is called _metsänpeitto_ , literally "woodscover" but meaning "Being hidden by the forest". It is characterized by getting lost, your surroundings (often a place you know) becoming eerie, quiet, alien with a sense of being watched. People who have experienced it may also have reported seeing strange creatures or unnaturally large animals, sometimes even being guarded by one. Searchers may walk past, just a few meters away, but the person under the spell cannot speak to them and they may later remember seeing a tree stump at the location where the lost peraon later recalls sranding while the searchers passed. I believe it is confusion mixed with fear, panic and old superstitions. However, the phenomenon and feeling is real. I have experienced it thrice. I don't attribute it to anything supernatural, but it is creepy.

I think you should at least give more credence to the possibility she was in the wood the whole time. Firstly it is not only possible for someone to survive 2 weeks with only a couple hand fulls of berries to eat but is very realistic. 2weeks without food but having water is easily survivable. Not comfortable but survivable. Especially when she lost 18 pounds doing so. Her slowing metabolism and lack of food could have easily made her think she heard her father calling over the mountains and made her weakened voice less likely to be heard by people. When she said she "decided" that it was time to come out of the woods is not really that uncommon of a situation just an odd way to phrase it. A lot of people that are lost and have to rescue themselves from similar situations say they had to consciously make the decision that it was time to just get themselves out. I'm not saying that your theory is necessarily wrong but not weighing the known factual evidence as being more important than a few "witnesses" seems a huge folly especially when eye witnesses are rarely the most accurate evidence you ever come across.
@elonever.2.071
@elonever.2.071 3 месяца назад
Your point is valid. She also could have fasted the whole time she was 'hoaxing'. Without that one point, the 18 lb. weight loss along with she fasted for a week often, brings a whole new dimension to the mystery. I would like to know what her nurse shoes looked like after two weeks. If she spent most of that time on main roads it is possible they were pretty clean. However two weeks walking and sleeping in the woods in the rain too would have them look a lot worse for wear than highway walking and bus riding. Also the father moving to the highway where she would be coming back from her trip is highly suspect.

Even the more experienced of us know that you can get turned around and lost by simply walking from your camp, out to dig a cat hole. When “everything looks the same” an environment can get disorienting. Especially during overcast or rain. Meanwhile another portal opened with her Doppelganger crawling out. While she was trapped in an alternate dimension, her Doppelganger chose to walk out the woods, and that's who the witnesses have seen. Then later, she magically returned to our dimension because Bigfoot was bored. At the same time, her Doppelganger melted into a puddle. Then she walked out of the park and was found. DUH. 🙈

I have a friend who casually told me she's gone a week without eating, as if it was as normal as taking a shower, the other week. I was flabbergasted but there really are folks out there Built Different

Three day fasting is a fairly well reported phenomenon amongst people wishing to "reset/kick-start their metabolism"

9:30 -ish That Copperhead mimicry isn't uncommon, actually... ...there's a snake called a Gopher Snake, pattern looks almost EXACTLY like a Diamond-Back Rattlesnake but it isn't venomous/has no fangs & doesn't have a rattle. It DOES, however, coil up JUST like one & hides its tail in dry grass/leaves, etc, then shakes it back&forth to simulate a Rattler's rattle (while doing said coil pose). Rattler's are members of the Viper family, they have an infrared-like gland by their olfactories (why they're such good night-hunters, but can also identify other Vipers this way)...point being the Gopher Snake would be unable to observe this behaviour in order to adapt it without being busted & eaten. They're simply just designed that way. It's FASCINATING, actually~

I grew up on 129 my whole life, and I can promise......being lost on foot anywhere near happy valley road in the 50s or 60s was not a good place to be for a woman.

I've fasted for 2 weeks, my g.i. is so messed up sometimes I can't eat food. My family usually tries to get me to at least drink broth if it lasts longer than a week.

I was listening to this almost as a podcast while driving past US-129, Alcoa Highway, in Knoxville, Tennessee. It’s almost surreal to hear so much about my hometown. Also almost no one I’ve met says “Four One One” always “Four Eleven” I get the coincidence though.
