Other 3D Zelda: Only somewhat open world, tutorials skipped by runners. Breath of the Wild: 99% open, no way to skip tutorial.

Ironic, isn't it? That the Zelda game that is characterized for being the most open-ended, and having the least progression checks, is the only one we haven't figured out how to skip the tutorial for.

people were trying to get off the plateau long before the game released. That E3 demo that was also at Gamestops and stuff limited you to only the plateau and people wanted to see more of the game

Ooh, so it's not just SmallAnt, it's a bunch of different speedrunners. Neat.

I'm really excited for this channel. The explanations are really concise verbally but there is also constant video examples of the concepts you're trying to get across that are easy to follow and you seem to actually MAKE them for the video itself rather than showing a quick clip of some streamer performing the trick you're talking about. A lot of videos like this tend to have example clips for the most important part of the trick or skip but then the rest of the empty space is just taken up by random amalgamations of gameplay like its a commentary video. This is more like a Zelda pannenkoek video, and I love it.

So get this. the "How Speedrunners beat Mario Odyssey without Cappy (almost) " popped up in my recommended, so i watched it until the end (loved it BTW), and this video was on the end screen, so i decided to watch it cuz i remember the fog of the Great Plateau, and I pause the video at 3:52 to take a call and I look back at the screen. lol. Keep up the great content! Edit: wait I helped speedrunners understand a thing? Nice.

I've never seen a group of people more determined to avoid playing a game than speedrunners.

From a programming perspective, The cylindrical check seems more like a distance check than an actual wall you can't get past. That would mean that if link is more than a certain distance away from a specific x,y coordinate centered on the shrine of resurrection, the game will void him out. I think the only hope to skip it is to either set the flag earlier than expected (disabling the check), skip around the check every tick, or teleport directly into a loading zone outside the plateau (if even loaded and loading zones are processed first before the void out check). It's probably very unlikely that any of those will be found, but only time will tell

And we finally, finally, have a way to skip the Great Plateau! All you need to do is perform an incredibly specific sequence of memory glitches, beat the game deathless, and then load in a new game and boom you'll have the paraglider! You'll still wanna get Stasis and Bombs of course but hey, now you can skip the rest

Being a game programmer, I don't think it's a big "trigger" cylinder surrounding the great plateau. But just code that checks flags, when link is an x amount away from the plateau. Great video Linus and picturing it as a big invisable cylinder isn't that bad.

I have never seen such a wonderful start from any channel.We expect more with excitement.Keep up the good work.

Now this is the kind of video that is 100% unique and something I have sought out. I have been looking for some sort of explanation for speedruns for a long time, and I have only found that info through streams and actual runs; however, I could never fully understand what was going on until now. I am so happy that you individuals are doing this, and I am excited for future videos!

I would guess that the way the tutorial Plateau is implemented is the same as the Divine Beasts. It's pretty much a different world, separated from the rest of the map, with Hyrule rendered just as background. The bounding cylinder might not even be a collider, but a direct comparison of the horizontal distance from Link's position the world origin against a hard coded limit distance.

This was a huge plot twist. when I read the inescapable fog I assumed it was about the korok forest, but It was still a great video, now I think I’m gonna try speed running this game

I remember accidentally doing the fall damage cancel glitch (or whatever it's called) and remembered feeling really amazed and proud of myself.

I've never seen a group so dedicated to spend the least amount of time playing and gave as speedrunners, but at the same time I've never seen a group so dedicated to playing games as speedrunners.

"Lowest Percent" is like a RU-vid speedrunner Supergroup.

There are some inaccuracies in this video. The "barrier" surrounding the great plateau is not cylindrical, it's a rectangle. Also, unlike the fog plane it's not an actual object that functions as a trigger when you collide with it. Instead, it's a hard-coded check of Link's world coordinates, it simply validates that it's within certain values. This is also why it's in the shape of a rectangle. The check basically says: *IF* (xCoord < westThreshold *OR* xCoord > eastThreshold *OR* yCoord < northThreshold *OR* yCoord > southThreshold) *THEN* _Kill Link!_ That's why it's also extremely unlikely that we'll ever find a way to circumvent the "barrier" itself. The check is disabled by having the paraglider in the inventory so it's far more reasonable to try and find a way to acquire the paraglider early.

Nintendo really love the 'put them in a large cylinder of invisible walls' method of keeping players where they're meant to be, huh. First the barrier in Wind Waker, now this

Yeah that "BIL" is EXTREMELY fun and helpful in a casual playthrough. Its my main method of traveling in the game now.

I'm no speedrunner, but what I'm thinking is if you could find where the loading zone for the Rhoam cutscene is before you get every Rune, then clip out of bounds to it, you could potentially trigger it. Not skipping the plateau itself, but skipping most of it.

I spent the whole video marveling at how much the narrator sounded like Linkus before it was finally spelled out in the outro. Now that my dumb ass is caught up, I'm really excited that Linkus has a channel devoted to short-form documentary stuff like this.

Reminds me of that impenetrable barrier around Hyrule Castle in Wind Waker. Eventually it was figured out how to get through it. Hopefully people figure out a way through the Great Plateau void someday too.

4:43 I don't think that's true. The Dark Beast Ganon fight takes place in a different map than the usual Hyrule overworld. It's entirely possible that this alternate map lacks the barrier around the Great Plateau.

Nice to know more information about BOTW speedruns than just "GO 2 Ganon right away"

Really cool video! The only way I can think to improve it would be if you showed a clip of Link voiding out miles from the great plateau, to convey just how big the pre-paraglider void is. For anyone unaware, people have discovered how to wrong warp. You can load a brand new save file, and start inside a random shrine far from the plateau. After grabbing the spirit orb and leaving, Link takes a few steps then immediately collapses to the ground with a "Euuaaaaaaa!". It's pretty funny to watch. After a lengthy load screen, back to the plateau. Nintendo really didn't want us to skip it.

I have always enjoyed speed running, but I have never understood it, this channel is amazing because it can simplify complex maneuvers, and generally make speed running a fun piece of entertainment, consumable by all audiences.

It‘s actually quite frustrating to see how close we have been to skipping the GP Barrier. The barrier is tied to Link, so as long as you have control over him, it exists. However, there are ways to „softlock“ the game, making you unable to control Link. The problem is though that you can‘t do anything from there. Another possible way to skip the barrier would be to somehow deactivate auto-saves. With a complicated setup iLegendofLinkk found using cheats to deactivate auto-saves, it‘s actually possible to transfer items over to another save-file, which would skip the great plateau entirely.

You can also preform back in time in skyward sword, windwaker and of course as you mentioned, twilight princess.

Such a great game. I have no interest in speed running or figuring out ways to break the game myself, but it is so interesting when presented this way with explanation and footage. It's awesome that the invisible circle around the great plateau is still unbeaten. How cool will it be when it is though? So cool.

after restarting BOTW i noticed that the cutscene for the old man getting on the roof is active after you get a extra heart/stamina vessle. find a way to glitch the goddess statue to give link a heart/stamina vessel early, and you may be able to skip the first 4 shrines
