Why are we treating MURDERERS like victims???? If they were abused and it was proven it would be very easy to score an early release. Prisons, do it ALL THE TIME. Where is the video proof of the parents s*xually abusing the brothers?? By the way the family testimony is not reliable, there is reason it wasn't accepted as exculpatory evidence.

I remember reading about how Ryan didn't tell Sarah Paulson that the scene she was gonna do that day was a grape scene. So it freaked her out more and she genuinely was so scared. He didn't tell her because quote "I wasn't sure when you read the scene if you were gonna take issues with it and not want do it." You can't say it's because he thinks they are cold blooded killers and just doesn't care because he doesn't respect his actors either. He is a horrible man. Yes the Menendez brothers killed their parents, that wasn't the question in court, it's were they being horrifically abused and did they fear for their life enough to warrant killing them. And that was withheld in their second trial. No testimonies from family witnesses, the brothers couldn't even say a word about it and just sit there, and even the jurors were told forget about everything from the first case. So it wasn't a fair trial because a fair trial is where you hear all the evidence and all the testimonies and decide for yourself, the jurors, if they are guilt. If you didn't believe them than you vote against them, it's your right, which is what happened in the first trial. The vote count was half and half so they deemed it a mistrial. Edit: Thank you Brett for actually discussing this. I always wondered what your thoughts on them were.

He is her boss and should've told her what would be happening. But he chose not to because he didn't want to take the risk of her saying no, so he just sprung it on her. So she had to go through with it, and it terrified her. He should be treating his staff better, at least have someone walk her through it, and council her if he thought she might be frightened to say no, so at least she had comfort. That's what a normal director and person with compassion and reason would do. But with that being said, you can enlighten me on why you feel that way about her.

I sincerely don't understand why people don't believe them. Two brothers: one, at 14 is losing his hair from stress, writes an essay about a death row inmate who killed his child's rapist, and until 17 plays with stuffed animals, naming all 40 of them and writing letters from their names. The other brother was found at 7 with an injury typical of sexual abuse, which the parents couldn't explain. He wrote letters expressing his fear that his father might come into his room at night. Both have the emotional maturity of 8 to 10-year-olds and exhibited many behaviors typical of children who have suffered sexual abuse. Over 50 people claim to have witnessed them being subjected to various forms of abuse by their parents. Their mother keeps nude photos of them with erections in a separate envelope, with their faces cut out, and is excessively concerned about her now-adult son's sexual life. She even complains to her therapist about it and about keeping shameful family secrets. Their father drilled a hole in his son’s room, has a history of beating '13-year-old' prostitutes, showing child pornography to guests and neighbors, is friends with a pedophile, and another man has accused him rape when he was 13. Everything is extremely obvious to me.

Not to mention the fact that the family was basically wealthy west coast socialites. It really seems like these poor brothers were actually “made an example of,” by the powers that be, because nothing else seems to make much sense. Increasingly now it is shown that so many “top officials” in high places are not only complicit in high crime abuse, but also that they protect and defend each other, because they all are complicit together. It’s truly abhorrent and my sinful hot take is that the brothers did the right thing by taking justice when none was ever going to be given to them. I know it’s morally wrong but they truly snapped and the parents put themselves in their own danger and suffered their own consequences.

That's a lot of coincidences to explain. There is no real evidence of any of these claims and the character of the murders themselves belies this abused victim mumbo-jumbo. It doesn’t matter what their parents did. Unless they were mid attack and using self defense instead of a planned out murder. Then it is a crime that deserves time. Also their story changed consistently. And their details were way too detailed as if they took time to come up with stuff. I don’t doubt they were abused, but I believe they took that narrative and ran with it to get out of trouble. My father was brutally abused and he did not kill them, rather he left them, cut them out as if they don’t exist: and built an incredible life.

I remember the trial and am not yet convinced they deserve all the sympathy they are getting now. They were legal adults at the time of the murder & could have chosen to have nothing to do with their parents or pressed charges. What I recall is that after the murder they went on a spending spree, ostensibly because they were celebrating & expected a large inheritance. During the trial they would "fake cry" (no tears) & display bizarre demeanor & facial expressions. People are also trying to re-write history on the Scott Peterson trial. That is an even harder sell for me.

Society again taking the side of the criminals instead of the victims. Most movies nowadays are empathizing with the bad guys and trying to understand them and make them relatable. Anti-hero movies like Joker, Venom, Suicide Squad, Dead Pool, and the list goes on. It used to be good vs. evil but now we try to justify evildoers. Sorry but they killed their parents in cold blood and then went on a shopping spree. They were adults and knew exactly what they were doing regardless of what their father ALLEGEDLY did to them.

Murder is murder, and yeah, they deserve to be im jail for that, but they way people had been treating them, and the way that they portrayed them in the tv show.... is very, very wrong....(not talking about the actors, they did an amazing job) I kinda made myself watch it until the end , (I heard about them already many years ago from true crime videos and such you know, so I knew about their story) so things were weird for me when I watched it, especially their relationship..... like.... was that really necessary..... The only thing I was really sad about was the ending.. that was really sad. Because in the other older documentary, they didn’t show that part, I think, so seeing it, was really sad. I feel sorry for them in some way, especially when people literally made fun of them back then, like, even if you don't believe that they had were sexually assaulted.. why would you make fun of such a thing?...beacuse they are boys and not girls? becuase they said it *after* the murder and not before? becuase they came from a rich family?.... I mean, yeah, things were diffrent back then and people saw things diffrently then how we can see them today, but still... The only few good things Ryan Murphy did, was showing those two amazing actors, and playing old and good songs from that time.... I kinda hope that that they would get out of jail in the near future..

I went into the show thinking that they were going to show the brothers sides of the story and did not know that it was all these other sides that people speculated about what happened. They never said that was what it was going to be about until after they got a lot of backlash. I think the actors were amazing and did their roles perfectly with what they were given, but these are people’s real life and trauma and it shouldn’t have been so sexualized and misinformed. If u want to watch a good Hollywood remake of the brothers life and trial, I highly recommend watching Law and Order True Crime: Lyle and Erik Menendez story. Also, the creator of the documentary series just released a podcast where he shares about his experience making the documentary and even shows his conversations with Erik and Lyle and they go really in depth about the murder and their lives in prison. So I highly recommend listening to that and it is called The Menendez Brothers: The Official Companion Podcast.

It’s telling that so many people only learned about the Menéndez brothers through Netflix. I first heard about them years ago in an episode of Power, Privilege, and Justice by Dominick Dunne. Although I wasn’t born when the crime happened, it was a major news story because these were two incredibly privileged boys who brutally murdered their parents. It’s frustrating that Netflix’s portrayal has led people to sympathize with them, despite their clear and undeniable guilt. This reminds me of how many didn’t know who Jeffrey Dahmer was until Netflix covered his crimes. Both Netflix and Hulu have a habit of glorifying depravity and distorting the truth. For example, Hulu’s portrayal of Gypsy Rose twisted her story to the point where many believed she was justified in committing murder. The Menéndez brothers are guilty-there’s no question. If people took the time to watch real documentaries or examine the facts, they’d see the truth. It’s alarming how easily entertainment can warp public opinion.

Their dad though is a unique case, like p Diddy and there is no doubt in my mind many others who joined who are getting away Scott free. Their dad was protected so much that even other family members who knew remained silent. Another person has come out who felt like they couldn't with sa. The police would most likely be tipped off (he was very wealthy) and its made clear even though they left their parents he was still in control. For them I believe this was a win anyway, I saw the evidence from the first trial so I know they were 100 percent sa, but it meant nothing in their case, it was dismissed in the second trial as irrelevant and the judge had... connections... If he wasn't dead I bet he would still be getting away with it. And that would eat those brothers alive. For me it's more of a thing his death saved a lot of others from going through that, to me which might sound terrible, it's justified if you 100 percent know they have rigged the law and you know will get away with it and do it over and over again, it feels better to be in jail than let someone like that reoffend with zero consequences.

You are having those thoughts cuz you are seeing this case, the two rich spoiled kids the image that is created by the media which made you question and think twice but go look at the case of average kids, poor adults, and women getting abused and then killed because they tried to tell others and tried to get help. Their father was wealthy and had powers, even the adult relatives could not help but have to follow when he made sure not to come to the bedroom when he was with his 6 years old son alone even if they heard noises. What kind of mother made her son give her a pleasure she didn't get from her husband? There is no single mom and dad that do that to their kids we call them rapists and abusers, not parents. We often say rapists, pedo, and abusers should be killed and we blame victims by saying "Why don't you fight back or just kill them!!" but when we see that happen we blame the victims for killing and question "Why don't you just run?" The victim blaming we often do cuz we firmly believe that we can do better if we were in their shoes is so sickening. If we keep blaming victims for every way they chose to end their life, body, and mind being fucked up by abusers, what are victims supposed to do? Should they keep trying to get help even if their abuser had powers to hide it in every way and keep raping them until the victims die and couldn't even live a life like you who can live comfortably and have no need to worry a thing about your father coming to your room at night to rape you with his heavy body, put every object in your ass make you drink his cums and control every aspect of your life?

I agree with both of you...but all three murderers (Menendez Brothers and Gypsy Rose) killed their abusers. After being abused for so long, their psychology is different. Does that allow them a free pass? No way. They should go to prison, and did. The brothers have served 35 years. If they have spotless prison records and have been doing the service work reported, is 35 years paying their debts to society? I can definitely see it both ways. A resentencing may be in order, considering abuse (if proven) but I also am stumped on why society fights so hard for murderers. What about the people in prison who are factually innocent?

The Law & Order True Crime did a more better adaptation with the brothers story. I also find out the reason Ryan did his adaptation differently was he was using conspires theories from gossip journalist Dominick Dunne when there were other journalists & writers like Robert Rand who wrote better perspective of the brother story and the trial. Neither Ryan or Dominick ever bother to sit and talk with the brothers about it, which isn't a difficult thing since so many people are in contact with the brothers sending letters, phone them & doing one on one visits with them. Which some actors from Monsters took the time out to do. I also hear Erik and Lyle prefer the Law & Order True Crime adaptation of their story to the Monsters Lyle and Erik Story tv series.

They then went on to argue in court that they were abused by BOTH parents (not just Jose) and they were in fear for their life- hence it was SELF DEFENSE. Strangely this defense was the same defense Leslie Abramson used when she represented 17 year old Arnel Salvatierra. He killed his father Oscar as he was sleeping. The defense? Arnel Savatierra killed his father after a lifetime of abuse. He got convicted of voluntary manslaughter and was given probation. Quite a coincidence? No?
