I take on the Inglenook Shunting Puzzle on the Modular Model Railway.

Last year I made a video where I attempted to solve the Inglenook Shunting Puzzle on my smaller layout Pickwick Yard. Well as this simple game has a huge amount of possible combinations and puzzles to solve I figured I'd have another go at it, this time on the Modular Model Railway.
The Inglenook Shunting Puzzle is a great game you can play on your model railway, especially if you're the sort of person who prefers shunting over watching trains run round in a circle. If like me though, you get a bit bored aimlessly shuffling wagons back and forth then the Inglenook Shunting Puzzle is a great way to add a bit of realism and purpose to your model railway running session.
The aim of the game is to make up a freight train of 5 wagons in a specific order out of a possible 8 wagons. These 8 wagons are spread out over 3 sidings, 2 of which are long enough to hold 3 wagons and the final siding being able to hold 5 wagons. To move your loco between sidings you also have a headshunt (Platform 2 of the station in my case!) and in this you're allowed to have 3 wagons plus your loco. You then have to use the loco to shunt the wagons into the correct order while adhering to these rules before you can dispatch the train.
While some people build layouts specifically to fit the rules of the Inglenook Shunting Puzzle you can also play it on an existing layout using honour rules just like I am here. Nice little video, enjoyed very much. I'm teaching my 6 year old grandson about shunting ive build a small 4' x 18" board a we have great fun with that, each wagon has a number and we pick or train with a throw of the dice. I'll enjoy watching this again with him it's so nicely explained take care of yourself Eddy xx

I absolutely love the Inglenook puzzle so of course I want to see more! I think it would be interesting to do multiple Inglenooks in a row to make up a large freight train for a bigger engine to pull, something like 15 wagons with three puzzles. Maybe you could even use three different shunters for that?

I’ve been recently playing this kind of puzzle with my 8 year old son (before I knew it was a thing and had a name!). We just used two sidings with a short head shunt. Challenges “like sort the mixed rolling stock into carriages and wagons”, or “sort the rolling stock into biggest to smallest”. Good fun and really good to teach problem solving. He aced it straight away!

I concur about the inglenook. I designed the 3-3-5 inglenook sidings into the track design of my layout. I agree also that it is a great way to give your self a reason to shunt, for those days when you just don't have inspiration, but still want to shunt trains. I have cards printed out so I can pick randomly.

Awesome! Yeah it's always nice for a layout to have a purpose and the puzzle is so versatile that it could really be used for any situation or theme. Hi, the Fish Van seems to be prone to jumping, maybe some weight in it? However, you could leave it as is & use it as a track tester. Because part of where its jumping looks like a lump in the track, short length of rail just off the point from the main line. 4:36 shows the location. Hope this helps.

Hi Chris, yeah I'm aware. It's a really old wagon (possibly from the 80s/90s?) which means the wheels and flanges aren't as fine as more modern wagons causing it to jump on the frog of the point. Thanks for watching 😃

Awesome, yeah the Midland 1F is a really nice little engine from Bachmann. It's become one of my favourite locos since I put a decoder in it as it's got a really nice consistent slow speed - perfect for shunting! Thanks for watching 😃

Nicely done, there, That Model Railway Guy. Most enjoyable to watch. The 1F is a gem. You're sure right in that just shuffling wagons at random can get tedious very quickly. Much better to have a plan of attack, so to speak. However, may I ask if using a second loco to tack on the brake van violates the Inglenook principle? Of course, you'd have to back the whole train to the brake van otherwise. I'll be attempting this on a (virtual) layout shortly, no doubt.

Thanks, yeah the 1F is a really nice model - a very simple loco but done to a high standard. When I brought in the Ruston at the end I was kind of considering the challenge over at that point. In the rules for the Inglenook Puzzle it doesn't say anything about adding a brakevan so really I was just doing it to have some fun. Thanks for watching 😃

You can’t beat an inglenook puzzle hours of fun. I have the game Trackz on my iPad which is based on the puzzle not as fun as doing it on a layout but has few extra challenges such as a gunpowder van which will explode if the you couple the loco next to it or an egg van which will only allow 3 shunts before the goods are damaged. Maybe you could consider similar rules next time? Love the smooth running of the 1F, great stuff 👍

Wow....thats quite a large shunting layout..sounds fun. If you have more space then as long as the ratio of wagons is kept the same you can add more wagons.

I've been running Inglenook puzzles on my new shelftop layout and it's a lot of fun. Having some trouble with stalling over a PECO SL-90 double slipswitch at slower speeds though. For context it's most notorious for the Hornby 0-6-0 terrier and the W4 Peckett tank engines. My J15 seems to manage fine. Any advice on fixing this? Love your work.

Hey Zachary, I would check to make sure that the double slip is laid completely flat and not bowing at all. I had similar trouble with mine initially because of this as it would cause the smaller locos to lift some of their wheels off the track. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Someone else commented about the Fish van jumping about, it appears to jump over the check rails on the point leading to Siding 2? One cure could be checking the wheel guage??? I've built a 5-3-3 Inglenook board, as a starting point towards building a modular rail layout. The number of wagon positions possible with 5 wagons picked out of 8 wagons is 6000+, but sorting all 8 wagons !! into a new order has 40,000 combinations, plenty of fun!!

Hey John, yeah it's just an old wagon with rather large flanges so it doesn't like the more finer modern points. Nice, an Inglenook board definitely sounds like a good starting point for a modular railway and you're right there are plenty of combinations to keep you busy! This is another awesome Shunting puzzle video, but I would like to see if a small tender engine could also do this. I understand tank engines are the best for this, but your sidings in this video seem big enough for a tender engine to navigate as well. Otherwise, loved the video. And great engine choice for it too.

Thank You! Yeah it's definitely possible to do it with tender engines too. The main thing for me is that the loco is a good runner at slow speeds so perhaps the Hornby J15 or the new Bachmann 812 would be good candidates for the job! Thanks for watching 😃

Love the video. I have a smaller version - 4' X1' with three sidings. My rules are a 5 wagon train in siding 3, siding 1 allows a max of 3 wagons, siding 2 max 2 wagons. All good fun. One question - how do you uncouple your wagons?

Honestly, don't worry about the locomotives from diferent railways because (I'm Spanish) and I use Spanish, French, and German rolling stock (even knowing that it's imposible in real Life because the gauges are diferent) and I've got a British Railway crossing. (Also, sorry about wrong writting I have my keyboard in Spanish so it doesn't allow me to write normaly in English)

I played this puzzle in a free model railway planner (3d train studio v6) and use colored wagon&tankers and used wheel color randomizer(yeah i dont have any model railway) :,)

Am I right in thinking you have used insulfrog points despite running with dcc?

Hey Matt, that's correct. The layout is used mostly for DCC but does run DC on occasion too. I found that using insulfrog points made the wiring a lot more simple and even the small Ruston doesn't have any trouble with stalling on them. Thanks for watching 😃

Hi, aren't you supposed to pick numbers out and apply them to certain wagons so that you know which order they should end up in ??? Saw the wagon positions at the top of vid but not sure how you came by that configuration. Still enjoyed the vid though. Thanks.

Hi Richard, yes that’s the general idea. This is actually a follow up to my original Inglenook shunting video and in that one I made up cards with a picture of each wagon on which were picked at random. I did that off camera this time with the order being shown at the top of the screen instead so everyone could follow along. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching😃

I'm trying to get to grips with the Inglenook puzzle. At 10:00 you have 4 wagons in the siding, does the "3 maximum" only count for the stationary wagons ?

Hi Leo, yep the rule is for stationary wagons that you can leave in a siding. If I was on a purpose build Inglenook layout then 3 wagons would be the maximum I could fit in the siding without fouling the points. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching 😃

That blue "Fine Fish" wagon doesn't like your points, every time it goes over or through a set of points, it jumps.

It's 00 gauge and this is on my modular layout so how big it is really depends on how I have it setup. The standard inglenook puzzle layout is designed to fit in an inglenook though - hence the name. Thanks for watching 😃

Think you broke the rules, you have 4 wagons in the siding, not the max of 3 as you state.... you have scarwood through to Arnold's sand in the 1 siding

Hi. The front siding is allowed 5 wagons in it in total. 2 sidings are only allowed 3 wagons and 1 is allowed 5

Hey there, as Matt Berry has pointed out, Siding 1 (the one closest to the camera) is allowed 5 wagons max... otherwise it would be impossible to put together a 5 wagon train. Sorry if I didn't make that clear when I went over the rules at the start. Thanks for watching 😃

Isn't it funny how we have been groomed by Hornby over the last two years to believe that £70 is a now good bargain for a tiny shunter. I really cannot imagine many parents considering introducing their children to the hobby these days. I assume when my generation and the generation below me die off so will the hobby.

If you're referring to the Midland 1F that I said was a bargain it's actually a Bachmann model so I think it's a bit unfair to blame Hornby for that. That said I do agree that rising prices are not great for newcomers... I think there's a great opportunity for someone to come out with a proper beginners range of locos and rolling stock - like the Railroad range but with better prices. Thanks for watching 😃
