The problem I have with people and stories that say one more bad day is all it takes for any hero to become a villain is that they forget that it’s wrong. Like the point of the killing joke, the story that everyone points to as prove, is that the Joker is wrong Batman and Gordon both prove him wrong at the end.

I love how so many people completely misunderstood the point of the Killing Joke. Do they not realize that Joker was wrong? People bring up Killing Joke to prove that Superman becoming evil isn't out of character, not realizing that Joker was actually wrong. Like, he didn't break Gordon. Ordinary people don't crack, Joker did.
@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868
@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868 7 месяцев назад
And Killing Joke tries to emphasize that by showing the joker snap back to reality for just a second. When he says "why aren't you laughing?" he looks genuinely sad. He has a moment where he realizes that he's not actually right. that batman isn't going to see things his way. That maybe he is just a sad lonely man who took things too far. That he isn't funny.

@@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868 The joker realizing he's not funny is always a treat to see. I love in BB: return of the joker when Terry starts making fun of him, which plays on the fact that Terry is way more talkative then bruce, and joker starts cracking. People need to realize that The Joker isn't some "sigma male alpha" who's actually right, the whole point is that he can't get the joke. Even in the Dark Knight, the most harrowed performance of the joker, by the end Bruce calls him out on the fact that no, not everybody's as ugly as him, he's alone.

I think all of this comes from a fundamental misunderstanding people have when it comes to The Killing Joke. In that story Joker claims that everyone is "one bad day" away from becoming a monster but the story itself is meant to show that his belief is wrong. Too many people seem to take Joker at his word that people's spirits can be so easily broken and that's why stories like Injustice become so popular.

@radrno7
@radrno7 7 месяцев назад
Well the end of that story leaves it open for interpretation so no one can be sure if Batman really gave into Joker's mindset or to his philosophy. People like to believe the "killing" part means that Batman killed Joker, BUT it's really about how much of a "joke" are Batman's idea of justice and Gordon's idea of righteousness. There's no point in either of them trying to prove Joker wrong, because a murderer just did something that ruined Gordon's and daughter's lives forever and the one responsible is just gonna return to jail the same way he was before, learning nothing out of it. In the end, it doesn't even matter which one is the outcome, because Joker wins regardless of Batman's choice. That should be enough to kill Batman's ideology.
@projekttaku1
@projekttaku1 7 месяцев назад
@@radrno7 But it doesn't tho. Batman and Gordon persist. Joker lost. Its not about changing gordon's life or ruining barbara's, its about making a man crack and see the funny side of life. @@projekttaku1 Joker loses? He goes in and out of prison whenever he wants because he knows he can and nobody can do anything about it 'cuz they believe in "justice" that he will stay in prison and pay for his crimes or get rehabilitated, both of which he never does, so there's no point in them "going by the book". Either way, Joker got Barbara paralyzed and made her father believe she got r*ped, they'll both have to live with that forever and, instead of killing him to stop this from happening again, they just put him back in prison to repeat the whole cycle again. THAT is the Killing Joke, how not killing someone like him and believing what's "right" is such a poor taste joke that anyone could go mad like Joker by realizing this while the real clowns are the ones thinking they're doing good by just locking him up. I'm not saying Joker is right and that everyone can go mad after one bad day, but that the story leaves it open to interpretation, just like how he likes to leave his origin ambiguous, and in the end, Joker just made fools out of everyone in their own ideology, because he can and they'll just take it for granted.

They actually do explain why Wonder Woman is so bloodthirsty and ruthless in the Injustice universe. Admittedly, it doesn't come until the Injustice 2 annual in 2017, but there is an explanation: Basically, in the Injustice universe Diana met Steve Trevor during WWII. He crashed on Themyscira and convinced Diana to join him and the Allies in the war and Diana joins him and fights the nazis and they fall in love (kinda like in the movie only with WWII instead of WWI). But then one night, Steve gets caught trying to steal the lasso of truth and accidentally kills a guard. Diana then uses the lasso on him to ask why he tried to steal it and he reveals he's actually a Nazi spy and while he loves Diana, he loves his homeland more. Diana becomes devastated by this and admits that while she loves him, he killed an Amazon and fights for a side that has committed unspeakable acts on innocent people and she cannot forgive that. She declares that as an amazon it's her sacred duty to defend the world and that she will defend it from Steve before killing him. After this she becomes much more cold and ruthless in her mission to protect the world, which eventually leads her to joining Superman and his regime. Now, should this explanation have come way sooner? Yes. Do Diana and Steve still feel out of character with this origin? Yes. But it's at least SOMETHING to explain why she is how she is in the Injustice universe.

Even red son superman who was you know, evil and communist was at heart still superman. What makes an evil superman is when he goes about protecting humanity in evil ways. Let’s say all this was enough to just get him to kill the joker. Now he’s not only justified killing on the basis that it protects humanity he’s also stopped joker from ever doing anything like that again. It’s not extreme for him to then go around killing other disgusting villains that aren’t that far from the joker on an insanity and potential threat level. Everything is a small growth from killing the joker so while the end result is very far from what seems in character if you watch this happen step by step it seems logical. One thing Grant Morrison did with the Flash in his JLA run was that due to Wally's hyper-accelerated metabolism made him super vulnerable to chemical attacks. Just one bit would drop him like an elephant. It was a good weakness to nerf speedsters. But that's been dropped ever since Geoff Johns' Flash run. Now he's so OP that Flash should never lose because of Speed Force nonsense.

I never saw it as Superman being pushed a little too far, even though thats what everyone (including rhe game) says. Before the events, Superman is in a heightened state of euphoria over the news of "going to be a father soon". Hes so over the moon he goes over to Gotham to tell Bruce, but Bruce already knows. It's such a wholesome broment. Then Batman tells Superman that Joker's loose and plannin something huge, and Superman isnt even phased. He's over confident the heroes will win like always. Then Doomsday attacks, and Jokers got a nuke set to blow, and the heroes cant find it, but it's all cool cuz Supes is here. He takes Doomsday and 'dispatches' him, only to find out it was Scarecrows toxin making him "think" it was Doomsday. Instead he just killed his wife and unborn child. And the bomb goes off. All because Superman didnt take the Joker seriously enough when Batman warned him. So that was 1 mistake he was gonna fix. For good. I think Supermans mindset here goes a bit beyond having just a bad day. Not saying hes justified, but he didnt get just a little too angsty at the clown and snap for good. He became insecure. Lost his confidence, but kept his mask. He's Superman, and he has to be Superman. By any means. And THEN there's WONDER WOMAN! You wanna blame someone for the rest of the events, she kept goading and reassuring Superman's poor decisions. Reaffirmed the things he thought while in such a dark place.

I feel like this has kinda been a thing since Dark Knight Returns. While Clark isn't evil in that universe, he's still a push over. The whole point of Superman is his moral stability. We already know bullets can't kill him. It's about his resilience of temptation. Lois isn't the foundation of that. It's his humanity.
@mylem6234

Another example besides Kingdom come is action comics issue 796. Manchester Black refuses to believe that Superman would still be good if someone close to him die so he made Superman actually believe that he killed Lois. He even threatened to kill his Father, Mother and his friends. Even though Superman believes that Lois is dead he still refuses to kill Manchester Black since to him vengeance isn’t justice. This shows that the real Superman wouldn’t become an evil fascist just because he lost his wife.

Man you said it brother. I really do dislike how people see superman nowadays because of a few bad adaptations. As this unknowable emotionless god. Hes a farm boy from Kansas. Raised by two loving parents. For all intents and purposes hes human through and through. He just has alien heritage. If something like the beginning of injustice really happened he wouldn't go on a fascist killing spree. He'd mourn, seek justice, and help rebuild. Im hoping with James gunns reboot of the man of steel we can start to rehabilitate supermans image in the public eye.

I binge read the entire injustice comic in my senior year of high school on my phone. I actually really enjoyed it back then, but probably because it pretty much acted as my introduction to the DC comics universe outside of batman. I know it's heavily flawed now, but I still have to give the comic credit for being the thing that made me fall in love with Green Arrow. I still think the comedy in the injustice comic was really good, and Green Arrow pretty much got all the best lines before he died. Very good video. I came in thinking I was gonna get kind of salty in a dumb fanboy way since I liked the comic, but no I pretty much agree with everything you said. Even as someone who hadn't read much comics before hand, I still knew everyone was wildly out of character. I just had the mentality of "As a completely isolated story, I'm enjoying it as-is, so whatever." But yeah, when putting this story up against the larger DC universe, it falls apart fast

Honestly it only starts middling and bloating around year 4. Years 1-3 still have an ample amount of plot, suspense, and twists to keep audiences captivated/engaged/interested. Around year 4 everything starts to overstay it's welcome, and the attempts for shock come off as more of a bore. Idk that I'd say the writing for years 4 and 5 were subpar, I think it's just kind of hard to stretch out that much limited content when you've overplayed your hand in the first 3 years and have nowhere else to go. By then they were basically just tying up loose ends to make sure the comic fit the established game lore in the time frame.

As someone who isn't that big a fan of the Injustice series in general, I kinda disagree on the movie being better than the comics. While the original run had its share of flaws, I at least appreciated that they took the time to show how slowly Superman's mindset became more corrupt and unstable. It wasn't just "one bad day" and he's "Superdictator". It shows how he slowly begins to break his own moral code and cross his line over weeks of time. In the movie, the same structure is there, but since it has to be told in a shorter timespan, his developmemt feels rushed and while I'm not against him learning to accept what's he's down and trying to better himself by the end, it's a little less impactful when he's more easier to push over the edge in the movie than in the comic.

Barry holds a more conservative mindset than some of the others heroes like Oliver Queen. It's part of the reason why he's so hesitant on messing with the flow of time (until Flashpoint kinda change that part of his character so he's now just the guy people turned to in order to deal with timeline shenanigans). He's not often gonna challenge the status quo until push comes to shove. Even the game/comics demonstrates how him standing on the sidelines has caused so much pain to the world. It's why his redemption works because he finally stand up against Superman and fights for the opposite team.

6:04 Respect your opinion but this was the major issue with the film. Yes Injustice comics can drag sometimes but they also take time to show Superman and the other heroes slowly becoming corrupt version we saw in the game. It wasn't "one bad day", but sequence of events, with Lois death being the starting point Even after her death, Injustice Superman tried to keep being a hero and protecting people using extreme force only as last resort. The lines he crossed were at first very small, like taking away weapons from countries ruled by dictactors or sending the Arkham Inmates for new prision. The problem is that those lines start to become bigger as Injustice Superman (now more bitter and being influence by others like Diana and Sinestro) starting to make more and more questionable decisions until he became this irredemable villain, seeking to kill not just criminals but anyone who dared to criticize his actions. His quest to create a "better world" became just a lie for Injustice Superman to justify his actions, which in the end are just attempts to avoid facing reality, that he wasn't a perfect hero and can't save anyone (like what happened with his Lois).

I think the problem is that the movie came out at a time when literally everyone was sick and tired of the whole "evil Superman" trope and the "hero vs hero" story. It came out at the worst possible time and the inherent flaws that were present in the source material's story were highlighted moreso because, again, people were tired of these types of stories and were more than eager to rip this movie a new one. If this movie were to come out say, a year after the second Injustice game where it was still fresh in everyone's minds with better animation and employing the actual cast from the games, I think the audience would have been much more accepting of this movie, even if it does make Flash go out like a total chump.

My problem with the movie is that it has too many characters and plot elements from the comics for its short running time to handle, so you get things like the Good Superman coming in to fight the Bad Superman like in the game but unlike the game you don't spend any time with the Good Superman before he is brought over to fix things, so what was the payoff exactly? The movie would've been better off adapting just the first comic and streamlining things.

The problem with the story in general, regardless of its medium, is that Superman was, at first, completely right, but plot contrivance needed Superman just suddenly go insane and start mass murdering people for no reason. The whole story was one big Strawman propping up the artificial and erroneous "killing is always wrong" concept. Why do Murderers get to live and their victims not? Why do Murderers get protection and their victims not? And why, exactly, is Superman wrong, yet Harley Quinn, a literal Murderer, allowed to help Team Batman? It's never Black & White. I’m somewhere in the middle of this whole injustice superman thing. On one hand I like injustice Superman. Some thing I feel a lot of people leave out when discussing the whole situation with him is that he was still a hero for quite some time even after killing the joker (which let’s remember that he was forced to kill Lois, his unborn child, and unintentionally set off a nuke that destroyed all of Metropolis. I could buy that with all of that stress put on him at once he MIGHT have a moment of weakness. But throughout the first year or two of the injustice comic he’s still rather on the fence about whether what he’s doing is right or wrong, and throughout the story other characters are constantly pushing him to go further until he becomes so used to breaking his moral code that it becomes the normal for him. It’s not like a light switch just flipped and superman turned evil, it was a long series of events that escalated. However, even though I like injustice superman for that… I absolutely hate that every else world version of him after the fact felt the need to do the “evil Superman story“ as doing that all of the time destroys the novelty of having a superman that has turned evil.

I'm half and half on the concept. On the Plus side: Its good to see the 'Real' Superman go evil, instead of all of these 'Legally Distinct' versions of him like you mentioned. What effect would an Evil Superman have on the actual heroes of the DC Universe? On the other hand: Having Clark go evil over the Death of Lois (and even all of Metropolis) reduces him a bit. At his heart, he is a Good Man, made so by being raised by equally Good Parents (and I like how Modern Day interpretations of Martha and Johnathan have them on the Left and Right respectively, so he got both sides...i.e., Opposites Attracted 🙂) Its not just his love for Lois and his Friends that keeps him Human, at his heart is IS a Caring Person (Human), and would never kill anyone if he could find another way (and with his abilities and access to tech, he can certainly find another way, which could still be dark: Recall the 'Mind Control' sub-plot in the 'Squadron Supreme' series of way back when).

I think the movie would've worked better as a two parter. The Regime still needed to be made and more heros would see what Superman is doing as necessary. In real life criminals like the Joker would be executed after the first offence but, in DC it takes pushing Superman or in some cases Batman too far to finally end him. Joker straight up murdered 10 people in his first comic book appearance. He only gets away with it in the universe setting because they think he's crazy but, he's not. He has proven that he knows exactly what he's doing. He just likes killing people. In reality it's just because he's the only villain in Batmans vast rogues gallery that fans are allowed to take seriously. There is no true good or true evil. Just people with the power to do whatever they want and the powerless that would abuse that same power if they had it. Which is why Superman WOULD be an evil overlord in real life. Because people with not even a 3rd of his power already misuse it all the time. No one is using Supermans powers to save a cat from a tree or stop a crime from happening. They would use them to spy on people. Heat or cool down their food and just generally bully anyone that talks a little bit of smack about them. Superman just giving up after Lois from another Universe talks him down is admitting that he doesn't deserve his powers because he misused them in the name of Justice and only now realizes that everything he did was wrong. Grey area Superman is what doesn't work. Because you don't cross that line and then turn yourself in.

If I had the power to do so... I still wouldn't go back in time to try to stop all the terrible events that have happened the past few years... I look at the past few years as "a terrible lesson". Sure it was awful and depressing and tiring to go through all the terrible and unprecedented events that have happened the past few years, but we managed to get through them and survive them... I don't want any other future generations suffer through what we went through the past few years and that is why I think we can *all* learn from the past few years so that we aren't doomed to repeat the past few years. Best course of action is to learn from the past few years and continue to move forward in life instead going crazy trying to turn back time to try to change it and stop it from every happening because who's to say that once you go back in time and "fix" it all it just ends up happening again later on down the line and literally no one will have any sort of knowledge or experience on how to deal with the situation in a smart and strategic way because you went back in time and stopped the same situation from ever happening in the first place in the past with a short sighted and not permanent solution.

The scene in the movie where Superman heat visions all the “teenagers” always bothered me. Those guys didn’t look at all like teenagers. Those were not teenagers. Seriously if you people say that he killed teenagers then goddamn it animate those guys as teenagers.

They really didn’t have to kill off the Flash, just change the story a bit where he hasn’t fully mastered the speed force to go back in time, and when he tried to fight Superman (Todd) he lost and ended up getting crippled.

I'm not saying I want this necessarily, but why aren't there more examples of batman going evil dictator? It's actually slightly more in character for batman to take over the world than superman. slightly. Since there's precedent for him doing things like that for believable reasons like in Kingdom Come, Brother Eye in the main comics, and the Justice Lords episode. I could believe Batman would consider taking over the world if it meant there was a strong possibility of getting rid of all crime. more so than superman anyways.

I don't like injustice because it was forced the idea a person cant conquer the world without becoming a dictator and mass murderer is tiring to me id like it more if superman was in the right making a better world but batman wanted the world to be back the way it was would have been a better story

The problem with the evil Superman dilemma is that the whole "one bad day away" could be applied to literally any superhero like Superman. What if Batman went through the same? Yes, there's the whole "he doesn't kill because then he would become a murderer", but that's a massive stretch. Sure, he might think about it, but he would never just do it like that, because someone as will strong as him should know better than to just give into his own personal conflict. The same should be said to Superman. This is a massive detriment to lawful good characters because it makes them seem like pathetic cowards that go against all they built up and stood for. If you want to see a superhero becoming a supervillain, there's stories made specifically for that, which doesn't ruin the legacy of iconic characters, and if you want to turn them into something they're not, well... keep it out of canon. As soon as I see the hero that I grew up with, that gave me hope that everything will be better and inspire me to do the same for others, commit a brutal attrocity, it's over. I don't see a hero anymore, and no "he did what he had to" speech will ever excuse what he did, because that is not an action of heroism, it's an act of punishment. If you make a good guy that kills and all that, it's fine by me, but to make a good guy that would never do that, it's just plain betrayal and gaslighting.

To add on to that, the whole point of the "one bad day" thing is that it's bullshit.

All I keep hearing is how Injustice WW is manipulating Injustice Superman but never get any evidence of this. How is she manipulating him? Even if I went by the comics, the games don’t treat the comics as comics cause most of the events aren’t mentioned in the game. Nightwing’s death is mentioned but Damien talks like it was intentional while in the comics he talks like it was an accident. I don’t even think Batwoman’s sacrifice to bring the main universe DC heroes are even mentioned in the game, this is why I don’t treat the comics as canon cause the games don’t either! What I hate most about the film version is WW switching sides and Lois talking down Injustice Superman, it just feels like some woke BS they had to add to the story. Also of course injustice Superman would kill green arrow, the guy saw his wife and son die in front of him and now his dad is hurt? If you went through the same thing then would you have thought “Nah, it’s just a flesh wound. We good!” My main problem with injustice is how bias the game is on Batman’s side, we could’ve had both sides being good but has different ideas on how to handle crime. But nope, make Superman cartoonishly evil cause god forbid the cash cow from another universe be wrong.

I always felt the Injustice characters weren't out of character because they weren't the classic heroes. So the idea of Todd ever being reached and fixed was out of the question. This is who he is. Killing him or Phantom Zoning him would have been better overall. I hated the green pills (I really wanted to give the power houses a 4x advantage in the game) and I do think that is an acceptable improvement. That's where the improvements end. I'm not crazy about unfaithful adaptations and if that's what they made just slap a new title on it and go crazy. I don't get mad because Fallout doesn't fit in Wasteland's lore because they're separate, I don't get mad Omega Man or Night of the Living Dead doesn't match Richard Matheson's I Am Legend because they're only inspired by his work. Make something new and most of their problems go away

I do agree with some of your points your perspective had shown me, such as Plastic Man being a focal point in the moral debate of criminals deserves a chance for rehabilitation. However some other changes like "Hero" Harley that just happened hastily had me rolling my eyes into the back of my head. That being said I always found the Injustice storyline to be okay with it being an Elseworlds in mind, it's far from my favorite and far from the bottom of the barrel to me.

In defense of Flash, you could just had him alive but refusing to join Clark's side, didn't need to be a join him or die situation. I mean, who's gonna stop Flash from running off to do his own thing?

I am glad you made this video. I honestly like Superman’s transition to being a tyrant. It’s slow, and in the beginning he cares enough about Batman to ask Catwoman to help him grieve. He doesn’t kill joker and go “Whelp, guess I gotta be a mass murderer now.”
