Arkham Knight's HORRENDOUS Storytelling

I heard that the reason why Paul Dini didn't write Arkham Knight, was because he wanted to use Scarecrow and Hush as the main villains, and you can tell he was teasing that in the Hush side mission in Arkham City, because if you look around Hush's hideout you can see a few canisters of Scarecrow's fear toxin, and Rocksteady didn't want to do that, sooo we all know how that turned out. Great video btw.

The fact that Batman got 2 cures in Arkham City and he's still dealing with the infection was ridiculous. They went out of their way to shoehorn Joker into the story with people turning into him. Woulda loved to see Paul Dinis vision of Arkham Knight with Hush and Scarecrow teaming up

Agree with most you say but you got one thing wrong. Scarecrows plan was not to use the fear toxin in Gotham. He wanted to infect the entire east coast. He wanted Gotham evacuated so he could make the poison with the least resistance. That part makes sense. How he went about it is another story.

What if instead of Joker being the voice in Batman’s head, it was Jason Todd? Isn’t that Batman’s greatest fear, that the people he loves will die around him? Todd can act as the pure manifestation of that fear, leading him to make more and more aggressive decisions, until the vision quest scene where he goads Batman into taking the lethal method. Then Batman snaps out of it, realising that the guilt over Jason’s death is driving him crazy and that he needs to forgive himself.

They always said that Batman has so many excellent villains Yet when they wanted introduce a new villain, they didn’t put enough trust that the certain villain will be good enough so they always brought in Joker in some form to save the plot even though it makes no sense.

Oh my god! Imagine if the Arkham Knight hated Batman because the Knight was actually Damien Wayne and he hated Batman because he let Talia die. That would have been cool.

Scarecrow is one of my favorite bat villains and I was exited for a game with him as the main antagonist for game but then he became Hugo Stange 2.0 instead of the mad doctor obsessed with the effects of fear.

I like how they adapted the red hood storyline where Jason todd hasn't been introduced and the entire plot revolves around the fact that the joker is alive, which he isn't.

The Jason twist was obvious. Not only does the Knight look like Jason’s suit in Battle for the Cowl, but they specifically talked about Red Hood DLC...in a series that HASN’T MENTIONED RED HOOD EVER.

You know what's really interesting about this games story? When Batman and Robin was being filmed, Warner Bros. we're going to make a sequel, and it was to be called Batman Unchained (or Batman Triumphant, either way it doesn't matter.) The story would've had Scarecrow attacking Gotham City, which triggered the birth of Man-Bat, and Harley Quinn would've appeared, out for revenge for Joker's previous death, only there she would've been Joker's daughter, to retain some continuity. You might think: well, that's a coincidence, with those three villains appearing and having similar motivation to the game's story. But you know what's really interesting? Jack Nicholson was going to comeback, as a Joker CAUSED BY SCARECROW'S HALLUCINATIONS. Isn't that crazy.

I think Arkham Origins is undeservedly hated. Especially now after Knight has released I remember at the time the biggest criticism I heard for it was "well the game is okay but just wait for Arkham Knight". Now that Arkham Knight was a disappointment I've only really heard people liking Origins.

It also hurts because of how much energy they sunk into the visuals. The game looked stunning for something made in 2015 and the predator, combat and grappling evolved so much throughout the series. It's fun to play but painful to watch

The main two villains are so dry, just mouthing the same doomsday threats we've heard ad nauseum in each of the previous games (including Origins) yet they fall for the same pitfalls that each of these previous villains they claim to rise above made. Arkham Knight says, "We know how you think!" yet proceeds to send waves of cannon fodder after him just and even acts surprised when you overcome them like every one of Batman's other villains. Hell, why doesn't he just go hit the Batcave since he knows where it is?

Wait Jason was tortured in arkham Asylum and batman was probably in arkham asylum in the 1st game during that time and HE STILL DIDN'T FIND HIM!

Why would joker break *INTO* his prison to torture someone and do it for months without capture

I find it strange how while Batman is in the van at the end of the game, Alfred refers to Jason following Batman. So that just implies that instead of doming Scarecrow in the back of the head, Jason just sat there and watched Batman get tied up and unmasked on live television

To be fair though Arkham Origins was one of the best explorations of the relationship between Bats and the Joker to date

Arkham Knight just has too many moments where the characters are robbed of logic for no good reason. For example, in the end of the game when Scarecrow was going to shoot either Robin or Gordon. Why not let Robin take the hit because it isn't like he has Kevlar in his armor or anything right? As you mentioned Bats has lockpicks and stuff in his gloves, why can't he just break out and deck Scarecrow in the non existent schnoz? I hate that the story relies on everyone being absolutely dumb.

Scarecrow knew Batman's fears because the Arkham Knight told him. It was at least mentioned in one of the tapes in the Arkham Knight's bio.

In hindsight, Batman’s comments about everything coming to an end are quite depressing with Kevin Conroy’s passing.

It's a shame the story was handled so haphazardly, because in terms of gameplay it's definitely my favourite of the trilogy.

You know this game in terms of story, is like if you mixed Batman: Under the Red Hood with Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, and removed all of the cool, innovative, and peak storytelling parts of those movies/stories and made them dumb and convoluted for no reason

The story was a total mess, but the free roam gave me something I wanted ever since I was a kid, full Gotham City free roam with my favorite suits and Batmobiles, so it still gets a points from me. And yeah Arkham Origins was pretty awesome actually.

I think you missed something. The Ace Chemicals plan was to cover the entire east US, not just the city. Then when that fell apart they fell back on the Cloudburst to just blanket the city.

In regards to how Bat's is cured at the end of the game here's the reason why. It's stated in game that Scarecrow's toxin has a small amount of radiation in it. And throughout the game Bat's keeps getting hit with more and more of it which is actually purging him of Joker's magic blood until the end when it gets a direct injection of it which, as stated, is the purest form of the toxin. So there Is a reason as to why Bat's was cured at the end of the game. Mind you it's VERY poorly handled and goes completely unexplained in the final mission and does NOT change the fact that Joker has magic blood nor does it make up for that this whole set up is stupid!!!

If I remember right, the whole "revealing Batman's identity" thing was more of a last minute spite by scarecrow. After all, Batman is already up like 4-0 against him by foiling his Ace Chemical plan, destroying the Cloudburst, defeating the Arkham Knight, and basically annihilating what was left of the militia at the GCPD. He still had Gordon so he was probably just like "fuck it, I gotta screw over batman somehow".

Hot take: the series should ended in arkham city, and should ended with arkham origins being the start of joker relationship with batman

can agree more with this part. When he was hauled away in the truck, alfred said something like "you're being tracked" and batman says "I know he would". if that isn't a setup for nightwing to swoop in and act as a distraction for batman to overpower scarecrow, then what is?

I rewatched the Under the red hood film (best batman film imo) Bruce quickly suspects the red hood is Jason based on his training and knows it's him around half way through Meanwhile, in Arkham Knight Bruce never figures out the knight is Jason and has to be told, it seems kind of disrespectful to the audience's intelligence honestly

They had me at "Yesterday there were 6.3 million people in the city. Today, not so many." So they evacuated 6 million people in under 24 hours? That makes about as much sense as Superman and The Flash being a part of this universe and them not getting over to Gotham as soon as Scarecrow made the threat.

I actually liked Arkham Origins, while I prefer Arkham City, Origins had its charms and had some good ideas like the hook shot he has from Deathstroke.

Here's what my (very rough and amateur) take on Arkham Knight could have been: As another user mentioned, Hush was going to be another main villain so I'm using that. Croc's assault on Scarecrow damaged both his body and mind, coming that close to death ain't pretty after all, so he has this insane revenge plot to kill Croc, who's doing his thing at the moment, plotting for his Season Of Infamy mission. While this happens, Hush has been on an end-goal of usurping Bruce Wayne to take over Wayne Enterprises, because, why not. Meanwhile, after the heart-breaking loss of Talia in Arkham City, the theme of, well, loss, comes in again, with Batman repeatedly flashbacking to memories of his greatest failure; Jason Todd. This actually means something btw. Anyways, Hush gets together some goon fodder to keep Batman distracted whilst he executes his grand plot. Meanwhile, Scarecrow is planning to pump Fear Toxin into the sewers, but this would be horrible because it could just fade out and enter the city, so the "Blanket Of Fear" comes into play again. Also you can play as Catwoman, Nightwing, AND Robin as they assist Bruce in what could be Gotham's Last Night. Hey, remember Jason? Well, turns out, after getting killed in an ABANDONED WAREHOUSE WITH NO OBVIOUS HINTS THAT HE WAS THERE THE ENTIRE TIME, his body was recovered by Ra's Al Ghul, who revived him and trained him, perhaps thinking he would be a perfect successor; he has every reason to despise criminal scum, after all. And this leads to him using the Red Hood persona, taking inspiration from the Joker's old identity in some morbid sense of vengeance. However, everyone thinks Batman killed the Joker! Not Jason though, he doubts that Batman would have done Joker in, but at the same time, can't help but at least think it's possible, so his whole deal is assisting Batman from the shadows as Red Hood, brutally disposing of Hush's crew. This gets Batman's attention and makes Jason important to the story, kicking off the last storyline of the game. Joker! Again! Yeah, sorry, I actually really enjoy the Hallucination Joker segments so I'm shoving him in. Batman and Robin track down Scarecrow's base of operations before he can pump the sewers with Fear Gas, and the trio starts brawling. In an attempt to escape, Scarecrow injects Batman with the Toxin to catch him off guard. He flees, Robin remaining behind to check on Batman, who starts hallucinating Joker, leading into a fake fight that leaves Robin concerned for his mental health. They leave Scarecrow's base and Robin tells Nightwing and Catwoman about Scarecrow's plot, as well as what happened with Batman, who convinces them that Gotham being at stake is more important, reassuring them that he'll be looking for a cure in the meantime. This essentially makes the trio of Sidekicks the most involved with the story, Catwoman and Robin going after Scarecrow, and Nightwing taking on Hush's crew. Things seem to be going smoothly, right? Bruce is looking for a cure and his allies have it all covered. NOPE! Nightwing comes across one of Hush's groups dead, the only calling card being a note cryptically stating "I Was Never Gone". Red Hood finally matters, Nightwing alerting Bruce, who immediately puts off his search for a cure, Nightwing taking it on instead, to go track down the mysterious murderer. After encountering more dead men, the same note being left behind, Batman deducts that this figure, dubbed "The Red Hood" by witnesses, is someone he must have known before, so his reputation as a detective finally means something! He starts interrogating crooks who somehow survived their encounters, as well as investigating leftover evidence to see what kind of gear this guy had. BOOM, first face-to-face encounter! He comes across the Red Hood in action, watching him easily take down a group of goons before attempting to gun them all down. Batman stops him, and instead of taking him on, the hooded killer flees, chase ensuing. Batman uses every trick up his sleeves to stop Red Hood, only to be flawlessly countered every time. Red Hood escapes, leaving Batman completely stumped as to what just happened, heading back to the Batcave. During this encounter, Catwoman and Robin, who were updated on the whole deal, are looking for Croc, trying to warn him about Scarecrow, only to find out that his Season Of Infamy deal is going down. Season Of Infamy mission ensues, Catwoman replacing Batman, and the duo manage to subdue Croc long enough to tell him about what's going on with Scarecrow. Croc isn't worried, nor cares, forcing the two to fight him and knock him out. Scarecrow, who was following them the whole time, shows up and announces that he's rigged the sewers to be pumped with Fear Gas, aware of what it'd do to Gotham. He states that he WILL set it off, unless they hand Croc over. Regardless of what Croc did, Tim, in good conscious, can't just drop a man to death's door. Scarecrow gases him and Catwoman with fear gas, fear segment ensuing. When it wears off, they find that Croc has just been kidnapped, and Scarecrow, petty, is going to set off the Toxin anyways since they didn't hand over Croc. The two go to Batman with this information, who's more stressed than ever, but has a duty to protect Gotham. Batman heads out once more, trying to stop Red Hood before he can kill anymore crooks, tracking him down to Ace Chemicals. Red Hood monologues about how he's surprised Batman hasn't done any of this already, seeing as he "killed" Joker. This leads to the oh so great revelation that he DIDN'T kill a man! Red Hood, in blind anger, attacks Batman, who pins him down and demands to know his identity. Red Hood retorts with the idea that Batman already knows, and just won't admit it. This gets Batman to back off, uttering one name; "Jason", cue the Joker showing up and laughing at this loser of a detective. Boss Fight commences, Jason using more aggressive variants of Batman's moves, along with gun-fire, and even some copy-paste moves from the Ra's fight, before escaping Ace Chemicals. Batman, under more pressure than ever before, reunites with his allies, and they tell him what they've been doing during his encounter with Jason. Due to Nightwing still trying to find/manufacture a cure, Robin and Catwoman split up, Robin going after Scarecrow still, and Catwoman now looking for Hush. Robin tracks down Scarecrow to, surprise surprise, the same warehouse Jason died in because pointless and irrelevant callback. He's torturing Croc, abusing his regenerative abilities out of spite, before getting engaged by Robin, Fear Fight commencing, Tim fighting a mirror version of himself, ashamed that he replaced Jason after his apparent death, his great fear being not a good enough Robin. The fight ends with Tim literally beating his fear, taking Scarecrow, and Croc, into custody. So ends Scarecrow's plot, right? WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL- Catwoman finally fucking finds Hush, who looks like- *gasp* BRUCE WAYNE? Hush sends his goons to distract Catwoman, before threatening her with a very particular detonator. He has the tool of island-wide destruction in the palm of his hand, stating that if he can't have Gotham (despite Wayne Enterprises not even owning Gotham), no one can. He detonates the Toxin, flooding the sewers, and then the city, with the gas. This causes all of Gotham to riot, leaving only the team of heroes, Red Hood, and Hush, to traverse Gotham sanely. How? Because Batman is fucking Batman and has gas masks, Red Hood has a god damn helmet, and Hush planned for this shit, also having a gas mask. WE'RE IN THE ENDGAME NOW- oh wait Marvel. WE'RE IN THE FINAL ACT NOW. Nightwing has finished the cure, successfully curing Bruce of his Joker Syndrome. Robin had to escape GCPD after the Toxin hit it, but is fine. Catwoman regroups with the other three shortly after. Red Hood is still very much pissed from the reveal that Bruce didn't have the balls to kill Joker, so he decides to "Save The Day" himself, gunning for Hush. This kicks everything into higher gear, Batman desperate to save his former apprentice, if that's even possible now. Hush makes his last stand in Crime Alley of all places, but uh, gets taken care of and nearly killed before the gang arrives to beat up Jason! Cue the not one, not two, not THREE, but FOUR-WAY FINAL BOSS! Robin kicks it off, utilizing his defensive and counter-measures to get Jason out of the alley, as he's trying to legit kill Robin out of spite, Selina chases him down, using her rope to trip him and pound on him every so often while he shoots at her, and then kicks him onto the streets, where Dick shows up and has the most drawn out segment of the entire fight, having to use the environment and his freaking shock sticks to get Jason worn down long enough for Batman to come in. Naturally, this ends the fight, a Deathstroke-esqe segment taking place before Batman shatters The Red Hood's helmet, Jason now defeated. What happens next? Jason wasn't taken in to the police, instead sort of being on a leash. He's still an Anti-Hero, but can't kill anymore. He and Tim managed to make up, and they aren't friends but do have each others' back. Selina still does her usual thievery, teaming up with the others whenever needed. Nightwing went back to Bludhaven, back to his dose of vigilantism, and Batman? Batman is Batman, Gotham's Knight In The Shadows, the Dark Figure, the Embodiment Of Fear, yet Heroism. So, the story ends.....for now.

Okay no hate man but you need to replay the game. The Ace Chemicals plan was to cover the entire Eastern seaboard. He was hallucinating Jason because that was the Joker in his head making him see that.

The sad thing is the _Batman Adventures_ comic had the EXACT same setup! In the comic, the Joker captured Jim Gordon and demands Batman surrenders to him. An hour later, Batman does so Joker has him strapped to a gurney and unmasks him on TV but finds it's just a cop. Batman just went to the GCPD and found an officer of similar height and build to him and had that dude pose as him and leading Bats free to following the guy to Joker's real HQ to save Gordon and capture the bad guy. The cops in the game *WORSHIPS* the ground Batman walks on. Why doesn't he do that in the game? I just can't believe a comic over twenty years old solved the big problem with this game's ending! Seriously, the only redeeming thing about AK is the fantastic voice acting, Joker's return, and Poison Ivy's role in the story. Other than that, this game was a wash for me.

This is a minor nitpick but I would have loved to see new villains get the spotlight instead of all the same ones from the previous games. The only new villains we got were Man Bat and Professor Pyg which were both disappointing in their own way (there was also Deacon Backfire but who cares about him?) I would have loved to see villains that were hinted at in previous games like Ventriloquist or Ratcatcher. Maybe reskin some of the missions to use different villains. Change the Riddler stuff and make it about Clue Master or replace Firefly with Killer Moth. I've already seen Two-Face, Harley Quinn and Scarecrow in these games. I'd love to see something new which is what I thought the Arkham Knight would be. Instead we just got a lamer version or Red Hood. Also I don't know why they made out Azreal and Hush out to be so important to future events in Arkham City (and if you know Batman lore you know that either could have made their own game) and instead relegate them to boring side missions.

What pisses me off the most about this game is that it completely ruined Arkham City. Are they saying Joker and Batman weren’t infected by a deadly virus caused by the Titan formula? If so, then why are these nameless nobodies turning into Joker instead? It’s a question that I’ve been asking myself for years, and I’m surprised that so many people seem to overlook this.

You said everything I've been thinking about this game. I love it, but story wise, it could've been a lot better

Here’s a better arkham knight idea: Azrael has come to set fire to Gotham and kill batman and take his place in the chaos, no arkham knight but instead Jason Todd is a side mission with the league of assasins. Scarecrow should be a part of it to make the joker a hallucination. (Not a fucking bio hazard like in the game) in the end it’s a 2 stage boss battle with azrael and the the first stage is combat. The second stage is stealth. The fucking end. This isn’t hard rocksteady

I think this might be my favorite review of arkham knight ever cuz as a hard core batman fan even though I enjoy it I can't help but agree with everything that's stupid about the game! I hope the next batman game alone with the telltale game will be much better, I honestly would love to have a arkham origins sequel.

Honestly ngl, Arkham Knight feels more like a summary of events in a story rather than an actual story

The game did a poor job of explaining this but Batman and the 4 infected were the _only_ ones to receive a transfusion the rest were tracked down. And the cure for Arkham City only cures the Titan infection, little did they know the blood by itself had the chemicals that turned Joker into what he is in it. How that makes them act *exactly* like joker to the point they are literally becoming him makes no sense.

If they changed the Arkham Knight to the Red Hood, and have the Militia be named the Arkham Knight's, or Batman being given the title, the game really wouldn't have changed. Honestly, the mystery might have even been the same, except there wouldn't be a shred of doubt.

Besides the graphical fidelity, lack of innovation, and the Joker twist, Origins still manages to be my favorite of the Arkham series. At least Bruce has an arc, and isn’t either a perpetual machine of stoicism and/or a moron.

Playing Arkham Asylum made me appreciate a Batman geared more towards mature audiences. It was grounded, focused & never felt like it was pandering or throwing random events together for no reason. There were legitimate stakes, but the threat wasn't immediate because the villains were isolated on Arkham island, which buys Batman time to stop them Playing Arkham Knight made me appreciate a Batman geared toward a younger audience. Batman in the 60's & 70's never talked about "the end" or blew himself up as a cover story. The villains could have hair-brained schemes & they still weren't as confusing as this (plus it was light-hearted, so nobody took it so seriously) Edited for spelling/grammar

I still can't believe Rocksteady thought they could get away with making Jason Todd the Arkham Knight and think nobody would notice. It was so incredibly obvious it was Todd from his first cutscene. This game should have just focused on Scarecrow since that is what the game's climax ends up focusing on anyway. Having a recycled Red Hood villain and imaginary Joker minimize his role in that game is a main reason why Arkham Knight was such a disappointment.

Cant we just have a game without the Joker around? Every other villain can be very interesting if you go deeper into them and make them work. Arkham Origin have the potential to be a good batman games without the Joker around but they ruined it at the last minutes. Rocksteady should have tried to keep Paul Dini around since I am sure whatever he had planned for Knight would have been awsome and wouldn't disappoint us. But no, it had to be Joker again and the predictable story that is the Red Hood again. Now, it would be fine if they had go a different route with it and do something completely different. I dont know who is behind the story but they sure screwed it up very bad.

I personally think Arkham Knight makes me “feel like Batman” the most. It used the cutscenes, camera, combat and more to make the player in control, like how Batman sees the flashbacks, it is all in game, not a cutscene. When you take villains into GCPD, it shows you get out, walk around the car, and take them out and put them in jail. Stupid story, great gameplay and immersion

Yea they truly used joker to death Get it?

I would've loved a badass fight with the Arkham Knight. One where he can beat you down and you have miliseconds to counter, and you can beat him down, but you can't just spam and you have to take certain intervals to quickfire your gadgets and when you knock him down, you have to pick him up and not give him room to breathe. The added difficulty being that you have to use various gadgets at certain opening at the flick of a switch and that Jason can counter you, so you have to be on the fly for that. And after the fight, Batman loses. The fight ends in a cutscene where Jason runs Batman through his armour with his knife, but Jason's hood is damaged. Jason reveals his identity and tries to shoot Batman, but Batman uses smoke to get away. Then we have a super hard stealth segment, where Batman is slowly losing health from bleeding out.

This game had so much potential it would’ve been on par with The Witcher 3 if it was delayed and they actually put more heart and time and thought into it.

Scarecrow's design and performance in Knight was amazing, perfectly terrifying. Shame they didn't give him much motivation or character. Crane has never really been given much depth, not even in the animated series. It shouldn't be that difficult.

The Telltale Series did original villains and stories better

At least with Arkham Origins, you still got to fight all the assassin's it promised (save for one that was more for a gag and a couple were pushed to being side quests) and even if it had Joker as the main foil again, it does remember it's their first encounter ever and properly ties it into the plot.

I played the First Telltale game. Its characters and story where much better portrayed than this. Bruce’s story is amazing and the balance of choosing to do things as Batman and Bruce is very well done.

This game is a guilty pleasure of mine. I admit its a mess. I just had so much fun playing it.

I remember when i first played this, i had an issue with story pacing and tbe batmobile segments. But man.... that art design was ON POINT.

The batman acting like its the last night thing is sort of a design flaw in a way in that its techically intended to be seen after defeating scarecrow( and thus his identity being exposed) but players can play those side missions before scarecrow and the dialogue doesnt change unfortunatly

I love Arkham Origins, not as good as City, but I liked it more than Asylum personally

I really hate what this game did with the bat family. Barbara with Tim Drake??? No thanks. Nightwing just included as a side mission (plus they didn't get the voice actor from the animated series--missed opportunity IMO)?? C'mon!! Jason Todd taking a huge back seat? WTF.. The bat family hardly interacting with one another? Fuck you... Side note- I really love Scarecrow's voice and look though. Something I hope the DCEU (if they get their shit together) takes advantage of. Jackie Earl Haley (Rorschach, New Freddy Krueger) would be perfect for that.

Great video man. Picked on stuff that most people didn"t. I personally wanted Riddler to be the main villain, kind of like in the comic Hush. But a character like him requires a great deal of writing and we can see how much that thing affects the gameplay.

arkham knight's story reminds me alot about spiderman 3's story. It tries to shove so many villans into its plot with their own little story arcs that at the end of the day, the overall story ends up being a mess.

Finally someone who echoes my feelings about this game perfectly. I'm already pretty angry when the only way a writer can come up with for the story to advance is to make the protagonist an idiot, but this happening to Batman of all people is even worse.

Arkham Knight's story may be questionable in some areas, but Suicide Squad Kills The Justice League's story makes this story look like a 10 out of 10 when you compare the two

What do you think of the Assault on Arkham Animated movie? (In case your wondering yes it is set in the Arkham Universe) Just curious on what you think of it since it's an animated Suicide Squad movie and in my opinion it's WAAAAAY better than the live action Suicide Squad movie.

in regards to the plot, you got a few things wrong there Scarecrow had the city evacuated so he can have access to ACE without being disrupted, there he can make a gas bomb big enough to coat the entire east coast of america in gas, evacuating Gotham would do nothing, this is explicetly said by the characters And as for his backup plan, coating the city in toxin and making it so no one could return still means that batman would have failed, and he would have gotten his petty revenge

All Batman's hallucinations feel like contrived plot devices. If Scarecrow has the power to implant such specific hallucinations, he's be the most OP villain in whatever world this story's set in. Either that or you have to accept that Joker's blood is literally magic and it causes a bunch of unexplained side effects, yet it managed to stay dormant for 8 years.
