Great vid It’s my least favorite out of the series because of the cyber stuff but mostly because every character has about 3 nicknames that you have to decipher, on rereads I just straight up used a cheatsheet that spelled out the codenames

It wasn’t just the format of the book that was brave but the subject matter as well

I have such respect for J.K. Rowling! BUT I agree with everything you said - and now imagine the audiobook - hearing all those online comments, text messages and tweets with all the @monikers read out loud in length for each and every one of them over and over and over and over and over and OVER AND OVER AGHHHHHHhhhhh!!! It tortures the listener!! Poor Robert Glenister, who is an absolutely wonderful narrator, having to read endless ENDLESS pages of that junk. I used the ‘30 second skip ahead button’ so many times!! Please Ms. Rowling hire an editor who will not be afraid of trimming back your prolifically detailed story telling. Not very thought deserves to be on the printed page.

However, the next book in the series, “The Running Grave” is the best one so far, absolutely brilliant!

I loved that the game is a story within a story. The internet is such an influential part of society now. I hope book 8 has a book within a book & is even longer. Lol.

Exactly. Even though I liked it, I also felt it could have been edited a little more... I just finished The Running Grave and, even though it's much better than The Ink Black Heart, it could use it a bit. Nonetheless, I can't wait for the next one! Troubled Blood and The Silkworm are my favourites from the series so far

A really good review. I agreed with everything you said. My least favourite book. I tried to read it again but couldn’t. The dialogue parts are very good. I wonder how it will interpreted on screen. Thankyou for your review. 👏

Hola desde Australia! I listened to all 30 hours of the audiobook and I feel ANNOYED!! 😂😂 In the audiobook you have to listen to every single word of every email address and Twitter handle and it was just exhausting and overwhelming. But, the biggest issue for me was that I didn’t care about the characters. In a 30-hour-long book I absolutely need to feel connection and care for characters! Also, it is annoying me that Robin is like a nun whilst Strike is out bedding every hot London woman over 30. I really enjoyed Troubled Blood and hope the next book is better.

Robin going undercover at the art collective is good, and her talking to the police officer is good. Strike's dating life was getting a bit old though.

Oh no, sorry to hear. This starts to happen with authors once they cross that threshold of fame and sales, they get a total pass on editing it seems and unless they self-edit, it shows. So many authors have fallen prey to this - JKR even in the later HP books imo, Stephen King, GRRM in Feast/Dance a bit, Robin Hobb throughout I felt, Robert Jordan throughout, Brandon Sanderson. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I am excited but terrified of Rothfuss' upcoming novella. Writers like Rothfuss, Tad Williams - they have to self-edit imo because the editor they have just is not able to exercise the control the way they ideally need to. And that's a big ask for an author who is probably too close to the text. As an exception, I will cite Donna Tartt. Many, many readers have criticised the lack of editing and "fluff" in The Goldfinch. I disagree. Having read the novel 3 times now, I actually marvel at the amount of self-editing that took place. Another author was Ursula K Le Guin. Not a word out of place. Wow. Same for J R R Tolkien for me, but I won't start hailing the masters, they were on another level, from another era. I wonder if this pressure to have a book out regularly factors into it along with the lack of editing because art is whimsical and it can take time. Maybe in this age when some authors are putting out multiple books a year, others feel this pressure to produce which may not work for them? Anyway, sorry for rambly thoughts, hope the next one works better for you. Take care and happy reading.
