One of the biggest hits in indie games from the past decade, Hotline Miami isn't just a wild ride through the fragile headspace of a madman. It also has a carefully selected soundtrack that illustrates both the indulgence of its setting and the chaos of its protagonist. Let's dissect the synthwave joyride that is the Hotline Miami soundtrack and see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

I really hope you consider talking about Wrong Number's OST soon, I still love putting that one on from time to time.

It's probably trite to comment "now do the other thing!", but I'd also love to see you discuss HM2. It feels like that game has so much more hidden meaning and I'll never forget the first time hearing 'Run'

Hotline Miami 1&2 soundtracks are probably my favorite soundtracks if all time, many of the tracks I just play in my car on a night drive. So good

In my opinion, the 2nd games soundtrack for the ending of the 4th chapter is amazing. And despite how hard the level can be, the song just makes me continue and it just feels good.

This was fucking excellent. I love Hotline Miami and the soundtrack is probably my favourite part about it. Would love to see a video talking about the sequel and to hear your thoughts on its soundtrack and how it stands as a game

That was a genius comparison with the music being metronomical in tune with the players heart beat or their thoughts. With how every beat matters and you become dead silent not breathing because you're focusing on your every action.

Never played either games but someone pointed me to the soundtrack of My Friend Pedro and how it somewhat compares to the soundtrack. I've listened to both soundtracks and they are really good!

Holy shit dude, this video is amazing. You really have a phenomenal way of not only phrasing things, but of saying them as well. Of putting power and meaning behind your words. I just watched this video as well as your one on Danganronpa 1, and I think I'll have to watch the rest of your catalogue.

Excellent analysis of how the music fits the game the way it does. Particularly about settling into the groove of some of the songs while you play the levels. Happened to me with "Miami Disco", which along with "Flatline", are my favorites from the soundtrack.

At first I hated deep cover because it was just so creepy and I guess it was made so that one of the most creepy tracks in the game is before you go on a killing spree it’s almost as if jacket knows what’s going to happen and is dreading it but still gets pulled in. As the game went on I started enjoying it more now seeing it as a nice peaceful sound before a catastrophe.

I agree with the others, you really should do the sequels OST. I believe it's a lot more... melancholic than 1's Soundtrack, but the music itself I feel is given a lot of meaning as well. Please god talk about it's piece de resistance: Roller Mobster by Carpenter Brut, perhaps one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

Great video! No offence but I couldn't help noticing how slow and methodical your gameplay is. It's a valid play-style but not the one the game encourages the most: playing aggressively, risky and improvising along the way (while looking for consistent series of actions you can rely on) tends to be more fun IMO. It might seem slower because you die more, but you actually improve your quick decision making and execution while your tries are all shorter, compensating for their higher number. Think about it: why can you so easily stun (doors / throws) but never for long? Or easily kill multiple targets in a single melee attack? Why do firearms (except shotguns) empty so fast with the press of a button instead of helping you conserve ammo? Why do you re-spawn so fast? (ok, that's also because it would otherwise cause frustration, no matter the strategy used) It's all there to help you improvise plans on the spot and risk death without worry.

I did play rather cautiously, and I think the devs made that intentionally in the design, but quick decision-making opens plenty of doors in the gameplay. Hotline Miami is a wild game with depth beyond belief.

As someone who played both HM and HM2, I disagree. HM encourages players to play more strategically and slowly. Enemies in HM are not only quick and accurate, bullets go at almost laser speeds. Also in order to get the highest rank in any HM level you'd have to mostly kill all of them by knocking them down and executing them with a melee weapon, since that method gives the highest amount of points per kill. Guns give you about 200 points per kill and the method i mentioned 800. You also have additional factors like exposure (the more enemies you are exposed to the more points you get). It requires you to think as to how are you going to knock down and execute multiple enemies and not die attempting to do it. Combos also give a small boost in points but not by much. And then you have HM2, where combos are key to getting the highest rank. In short, combos in HM2 multiply the points you get from kills by a lot and in HM its just a mere bonus. Plus combo meter in HM is short (can be increased using the frog mask) and in HM2 it is longer (roughly as long as when the frog mask is equipped in HM). Playing strategically in HM2 is viable, but will never ever get you the S rank. And not only that, getting kills with guns gives you more points, bullets are slower and easier to dodge and enemies have a slightly slower reaction time. All of this combined, HM2 encourages more agressive play than HM.

you should talk about hotline miami 2 soundtrack imo it’s better than HM 1 soundtrack and it’s shame how people didn’t really like HM2 even if it has batter story / soundtrack / level design
