@@gilly_axolotl seems clear they mean Rhett and Link's kids. RU-vid wasn't even a thing when R&L were born so there's no way *they* could be RU-vid nepo babies 😂
RU-vidr nepotism babies would just be the traumatized children of family vlog/prank channels. Just deeply psychologically damaged adults probably continuing the cycle with their own family channels.
another thing about the doctor thing lily rose depp said: having a parent who’s a doctor doesn’t make it easier for you to become a doctor, sure, but it does almost guarantee you a job at the same hospital or clinic that parent works at
Private practices certainly, but hospitals? For sure not, at least not in Europe. Your parents could let you know if there’s an open position, but no way could they make it happen for you if you weren’t qualified.
@@anonymmynona8219 That might be very naive though. Nepotism isn't just through parents it is also through colleagues and friends. If someone you know works at a hospital that person could be a reference. I think it also depends on which country and not necessarily Europe as a whole, or even hospital to hospital.
@@anonymmynona8219but who you know can make the difference between two eligible candidates. If a nepo baby and an average joe both have the same qualifications and are equally capable of doing the job (at least, from the perspective of the recruiter or hiring manager), then having that all star reference from a parent (or parent’s colleague, etc) could be the leg up that allows the nepo baby to get the job over average joe. They didn’t do anything particularly special or different to earn it over average joe. That’s where people see the problem; it’s a leg up that has nothing to do with the person or their capabilities, just who they know. This kind of leverage absolutely exists in hospitals, politics, etc - it’s in the smallest family businesses and the largest power structures of society. I’ve heard all my life that networking and who you know will get you much further than anything else in this world and so far, that only becomes more true the older I get & the more I learn.
I have a lot of feelings about nepo babies but most importantly, this video reminded me of the time Billie Eilish got called out by her brother during an instagram stream
Passing on a skill isn’t the same as handing down empty privilege. We should be passing along skills, that’s generous and expansive. Privilege nepotism however causes gatekeeping, its based solely on exclusivity; which forces an endless contraction, manufacturing ghoulishly competitive scarcity. It kills culture and suffocates societal progress. They guilt our criticism by making it about each individual “kid”, which is why we should be kind to individuals, ruthless with institution.
5:57 the way i cackled at this, it came out of nowhere 8:16 dexter in the bratz movie was a seminal performance that changed me as a person and yes its the only good thing that came out of chet hanks buat i am grateful for it!!!
The wyn in Gwyneth should be pronounced as win not when. Sorry, welsh person here. Not sure if Gwin herself pronounces it that way as she's American but jus so yk. No hate or anything, our language can be very silly.
Y as an “I” and C as an always-“kuh” and not a sometimes-“kuh” sometimes-“suh” makes so much more sense to me though. At least Welsh is more consistent, ya know?
You have to be so blind to say that becoming a doctor isn't significantly easier when your parents are doctors! In general, in academia, in my experience, people with a parent who got a phd or who became professors have an intuitive understanding of the workings and invisible rules of the academic world in a way a newbie from a worker family could never ever have. In some cases, even just having a last name that is recognisable to others in your field is immeasurably profitable for your career. It's ignorant to say that everyone has the same opportunities and access.
Honestly that’s what’s the most frustrating thing for me when people talk about nepo babies; that they think it’s just about the roles when it’s about the industry and it’s problems. That you have to have insider connections now, that you have to have insider knowledge to book role. All of this is so much more than “well they are talented” when it is factors of education, money, access, insider knowledge even before it reaches the performance bits
I’m in college right now and I guess I didn’t realize that friends too count as nepotism. A HUGE part of looking into higher education is what place is going to give you the most connections, be closest to the scene (cough cough LA/NYC), etc. And also like, most if not all colleges/universities have an alumni network that you can reach out to. It’s quite ‘friends’ or ‘children’ but it definitely feels like something similar. Especially because bigger universities have die-hard sports fans and you know a cult following because of capitalism. I don’t know, I feel like that’s something. I liked that you said that no one gets anywhere solely by themselves. On another note, I would love to watch a video about Twilight’s influence on Andrew Garfield’s Spider Man. Great Video!
yeah, i'd definitely be lying if i said i attended school in NYC only because of the school and not because i wanted to make connections with people here in the city. and thanks! a lot of people have seemed to be interested in a twilight/spider-man video so i think it's something i'm going to work on
@@molls127 simplified, the christian trinity believes that jesus and god are two (out of 3) parts of a whole. In general it makes no sense to thank jesus after you’ve already thanked God, the leader of the trinity. The “i’d like to thank not only god… also Jesus” is from a Bieber award show speech, so he really didn’t need to say both and that’s why people use it as an example for saying the same thing twice. It was a big meme.
The florist thing was a great analogy. I think Victoria Coren-Mitchell said something interesting about her being a journalist when her father was one was that it was easier because she “knew it was possible”, which resonated with me as someone who went to university for field where I knew no one who was in that field and by the end of my degree felt so behind all the kids whose parents were in the field and knew all the unwritten laws about internships and accreditations etc etc. Now Ive ended up doing what I went to uni for in-house for a place in my parents field - because I knew how it was possible to get a job there and I understood the way people in that field think. I knew how it was possible. I didn’t know how it was possible in the other field. That was huge. … Also lol poor Ophelia.
I think the reason people are so obsessed is because it's become nearly impossible to watch a movie with an American actor that's not a nepotism baby. There are so many actors where I was shocked after I looked them up and was kinda disappointed. Also I feel like people include Timothee Chalamet in these lists but I don't agree at all, his mom was an extra in like two films I doubt that gives you any clout in Hollywood 😂
He's the nephew of Rodman Flender and Amy Lippman; both writers and directors. I reckon you can be a nepo baby without your parents being those with the most clout. Other close relatives can factor into it as well.
the way my girlfriend and i jumped back in surprise when u looked us dead in our shit and named dropped pensacola florida while we are sitting on our couch watching your video in pensacola florida
As a fellow theatre kid I felt like each and every one of the jokes in the video was written for me, but I'm also delusional so who knows? Great video as always.
i'm so used to these videos being made by casey aonso that for a split second when i saw your face in the thumbnail i thought that YOU were the nepotism baby
I never thought it would happen but I recently got to experience what nepotism would be like. One of my professors asked if I could do a small teaching job to help out with the work load for a few days and I agreed, but it had to follow the guidelines for hiring new people. So HR told me they would put out an ad for the job and told me "we will try to make it as specific as possible and only keep the ad out for two weeks since we do not actually want anyone to apply!!!". which made me think.. do you guys do this often? 🧐 I have applied to research assistant positions before but never got an interview or even feedback about the job... did they already decide on the people beforehand? Interesting.
Your overall demeanor and look and vibes are so chipper that when you say something out of pocket my brain still registers it as normal until like 10 seconds later
Life isnt fair, whether it is fame or money (or both) some people are born with a leg up. To me, if nepo babies is going to be used as an insult, it should be reserved for those that got a leg up and are still incompetent. A lot of the people in that list at beginning were extremely talented. And i agree, if these people acknowledge they had a leg up in life, and arent entirely self made, it makes them much more likeable. Not to be too mean, but if you wanna look at an example of what I consider a true nepo baby, look at david beckams son (and his Burberry campaign and "book") Anyway, I know you love john mullaney. he is on tour and was wondering if you are going to see him perform? All tickets are sold anymwhere near me for 300+ mi so sadly I dont think I will get a chance :(
This obsession with pointing out nepo babies is problematic. Of course, everyone in the modeling/entertainment industries should have equal access to opportunities......... but ousting celebs for something that's not their fault - their family tree - can be humiliating for them. It can make them think they don't belong in their chosen industry. I applaud these people when they acknowledge their privilege, and am a little annoyed when some of them openly deny that their family tree has affected their success, but I'm not going to drag them like it's my job.
Really my issues isn’t so much nepo babies, as mentioned do we punish them for have the money and access to training? They are qualified in most cases just as everyone else so it would be unfair to discredit their talents solely for their family. But on an industry level it’s a deep problem; we see as now nearly no one has the ability to break into the field without some nepo aspect and there is a favor to people with famous names attached to them because it draws in attention. It’s the same to a degree how voice actors are becoming less and less common within the roles they are trained and qualified for because studios know some movie actor/actress’ name will get the better attention. Disallowing a system that encourages people to join the arts does nothing but slowly harm the industry and that’s why on a root level nepo babies need to be acknowledged.
