The Interview starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Lizzy Caplan is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (host of Turner Classic Movies), Matt Atchity (Editor-in-chief Rottentomatoes.com), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast) and Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemire.com).
See what other critics are saying: www.rottentomat...
In the action-comedy The Interview, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show "Skylark Tonight." When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un. (c) Sony

As a big FU to North Korea. They already took it on the chin financially speaking. How much damage is all the hacking gonna cost them? Heck, they aught to put it on fully charged cell phones, translate it into Korean, and drop millions of them in North Korea (along with some food).

MEGA Movie Man Mark They just completely scraped it's release any ways. They likely won't give it away for free, but they should just at least give it to Netflix & other VOD sites to make back some small amount of the likely 9 figures they spent on making the movie.

I agree with them actually...I thought he was way too over the top in his buffoonery. I get that he was trying to lampoon the vapid and empty celebrity idiocy of the Ryan Seacrests and Billy Bushes of the world, but he was just waaaay too goofy. Just reigning in his ridiculous faces and exaggerations a little would've made the character more believable. Hard to believe Rogen comes off as mature and restrained in comparison.

It's absurd the way the word 'terrorist' gets used in American discourse, very Orwellian.
@Frankiigii
@Frankiigii 9 лет назад
They're threatening to commit mass murder if the movie is released, how is that not terrorism?
@TheSpiritOfTheTimes
@TheSpiritOfTheTimes 9 лет назад
Potato Girl Almost trivially the US is in the lead (by far) by not only threatening violence but also actually commiting it (unless the North Koreans wish suicide it'll stay at words: and at if clauses). Just take a look at US official rhetoric about Iran: no options are off the table, that is an implicit war threat (of invasion) and a crime under international law.
@BaronOfHell666
@BaronOfHell666 9 лет назад
TheSpiritOfTheTimes The Sins of America doesn't negate acts of terrorism against it. Thats like saying just because a guy kills his neighbor's daughter you can then go and kill his daughter. Even if you think it is justifiable it is still terrorism. What else would you call it?
@TheSpiritOfTheTimes
@TheSpiritOfTheTimes 9 лет назад
Baron Of Hell It is true, America's myriad crimes do not 'negate' crimes of other state either under assault by the US or not. Still, hacking is hardly terrorism under any definition is it? And the threat of violence seems vacuous.
@BaronOfHell666
@BaronOfHell666 9 лет назад
TheSpiritOfTheTimes For me any act meant to instill fear is terrorism. Hacking can be terrorism but I agree with you it is not in this case. However, threatening to murder people that see a movie is clearly terrorism to in my book. Especially considering people have given in to their demand to not air the movie. I person think it is a BS threat but can not deny the effect it had.

Disagree about James Franco and Anchorman. Will Ferrel plays a cartoon character in Anchorman. James Franco plays a real human being. I always hate when critics get confused because movies try and go in different directions, and it confuses them. Trust me, when you see this movie, and you are NOT an idiot, when this movie takes different turns it will not confuse you.

@thewolfofwallstreet627
@thewolfofwallstreet627 9 лет назад
Me too. I think Sony underestimated North Korea. It seems like Sony was under the impression that the worst that was going to happen to them was that North Korea and possibly China would boycott the film because of it's content, and Sony was willing to live with that because they felt the controversy alone would fuel the movie to success at the box office. However, I doubt seriously they expected any of the attacks from the hackers, nor could they have known about the terrorist threats. I doubt Sony would've made this movie if they knew this was going to happen. I mean let's face it. Thousands upon thousands of movie scripts are submitted to movie studios each day, and maybe only 10 percent of them actually get turned into a film. If Sony knew then what they know now, then I doubt "The Interview" would've saw the light of day.
@michaelcerda5514

Steven Escareno 10%? Where is your sources?
@thewolfofwallstreet627
@thewolfofwallstreet627 9 лет назад
Michael Cerda Dude, that was just a rough estimate. That part of my post isn't meant to be taken too literally. The point I was trying to make is that movie studios get handed scripts each day, but not all of them get turned into movies. If Sony knew this was going to happen, then I'm sure they never would've greenlighted the script because I'm sure they've turned down plenty of movie ideas before. If they had known what they know now back then, I'm pretty sure "The Interview" would've been just another random movie script that nobody knew got turned down by sony.. That's all I'm getting at.
@TangoAndPizza
@TangoAndPizza 9 лет назад
Michael Cerda You dont need sources when someone is not providing any facts, just very likely scenarios or possibilities, which if you are not following the story, it's more than obvious.

I think What the Flick's trying to take the movie too seriously. Don't get me wrong - I couldn't help but want the movie to be more serious than it was, but it wasn't trying to be super serious. They made a movie about a relatively serious topic and play those notes but realize that in the end, it's a comedy.

You guys totally didn't get the spine of this movie, which can be summed up in one word - "Honeydicking". It's what the movie is all about. They're comparing what Franco does as a talk show host to what Kim Jong Un does as head of state... it's almost the same. The scene where franco is talking about how his dick stinks but kinda smells good is a riff on this theme running throughout the movie. Everybody is "honeydicking" everybody else. And Kim is the biggest honeydicker of all. And as for why the movie can't stop at just making Kim look bad in front of the Korean people during the interview... see "Chekhov's gun" for your reference.

@BoredDan7
@BoredDan7 9 лет назад
Not necessarily. Comedy may be the genre, but even in comedy a movie does not exist of pure jokes. Especially a movie like this with a topical subject. You don't need to shoehorn in lackluster jokes simply because it's a comedy, that space could be filled by character development, suspense, commentary, or any other aspect that may have been more beneficial to the movie then an "ok" joke.

PLEASE RELAY THIS TO THE STAFF & HOSTS OF "WHAT THE FLICK" TRULY-A HEARTWARMING HOLIDAY MESSAGE! Can I ask the hosts of "What The Flick" a question? Why do you think you can be movie reviewers and CONSTANTLY CONSTANTLY CONSTANTLY RUIN THE MOVIE!!! OK, Sony pulled the movie for now-that does not give you the right to reveal in detail the entire ending of the movie and specific details-I will not restate them so i am the same asshole as these assholes but this is not a rarity! I know they have had complaints in the past because now they SPOIL and put SPOILER UP as they are spoiling it within seconds so you have no time to even turn it off! Hey guys, this is not a movie analysis show-its a review that leads people to mmake informed decisions and this is the first movie you ever did that just happens not to be released right now but they do it over & over again! Even when they do not spoil, they use language that any idiot who has a brain can figure it out. I love Mr Duralde saying "I DON'T EVEN THINK THIS CAN COUNT AS A SPOILER BECAUSE IT IS IN THE LEAKED MEMOS". OH SORRY ALONSO, WE ARE ALL NOT ALL IN THE BIZ READING THE HOLLYWOOD SONY MEMOS-ESPECIALLY THE AUDIENCE YOU ARE FILMING FOR WHO WATCHES YOU TO GET INFO ON MOVIES AS IT IS YOUR JOB!" So yes it is A FUCKING SPOILER!!! I get that you are all jaded and see movie after movie and discuss them all day long-we do not and movies are entertainment for us not a job so we spend alot of money to go see these and not get free press screenings! In the same session, they filmed the HOBBIT 3rd movie review and casually reveal the death of a major character "EARLY IN THE MOVIE"! UMM, Excuse Me! I am not an avid HOBBIT Tolkien reader and enjoy the movies as a Hollywood getaway! I had no idea that major character dies and I am fucking pissed now that I know! What is wrong with you people!? Yes, spoilers suck! I am not an asshole worried about day to day nothing spoilers on tv shows and act crazy but when you go pay alot of money to a flick, then Yes, I would like to have the story naturally unfold whether it sucks or not-let me decide. This movie "The Interview" truly did surprise me with the ending as i thought they would go another way in my mind so when I do see it eventually hopefully on VOD soon, knowing the ending really fucks up the experience for me. I know on TURKS channel everyone has all the fucking answers and everyone nows everything that is true and correct for society. However, why don;t you take a does of humbleness and treat the movies like a special experience it is for most of us and show all of your audience a little respect. I can assure you the majority of the audience feels the same way.I am a moderate with liberal and conservative views and sometimes I agree with TYT channel views and sometimes I am outraged but i always respect their opinions. Therefore, brighten up and don;t think because you feel so highly about your views that it is necessary to hear your detailed summary of how the movies wrap up or how a character should have lived or died-label reviews as spoilers (as you do with the tv summaries that are so enjoyable because it is an open discussion by everyone who saw the eps together) so I can make the choice to have the ending or even the beginning ruined as in the case of Hobbit 3! I love Christy and used to enjoy the guys but finding their glibness and sanctimony becoming a little too harsh. Lighten up guys and come back to the love of movies with all of us and respect your viewers-that is my Holiday Wish-QUIT BEING ASSHOLES! Love you all! Merry Christmas & Chanakauh! Hookman

Alonzo mentioned he was surprised that the film got greenlit. I thought it was odd when I heard about it - but what's crazy is that SONY™ Entertainment's CEO actually beloved the film would filter into North Korea on pirated DVDs and a _actually_ inspire someone to assassinate Kim Jong Un. Which seems completely insane to me, but apparently an analyst at the RAND corp and, according to the CEO "Someone" at the state department agreed. My theory is the RAND analyst was blowing smoke up his ass. www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/sony-the-interview-and-the-unspoken-truth-that-all-movies-are-political/2014/12/18/406f84c6-86ca-11e4-b9b7-b8632ae73d25_story.html

Monumentally sad that the battle lines for free speech are being fought with the people who have basically murdered comedy for the last decade. It's like the last place I would want political satire to come from.
