The Cybermen return yet again for their FIFTH story. Despite their appearances being variable in quality so far, most agree that this one is a classic.
The Brig is now the Brig and the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe are firing on all cylinders. Not to mention some of the most iconic Doctor Who imagery from the whole show.
So is this really as good as its reputation...?

The Invasion is paced very well considering its formidable duration. A lot of climactic moments actually take place in episode 7, consequently the final episode isn’t a rushed mess. The same goes for The War Games.

Two linked four parters, really! A Quatermass 2-esque espionage story and "The Cyberman Invasion Of Earth!"

Electromatics - a corporation with more power than the state - a bizarre concept back then. Ahead of its time this story but yes a bit of a slog in places. I can remember being freaked out when the cybermen emerged from their cocoons (more so than the iconic St. Paul's emergence). Also remember laughing when the Doctor and Jamie stopped to play cards on the pavement after realising they were being followed. The helicopter wowed me back then - and remember the females (Zoe and Isobel) poking fun at the patronising mens' world. The Tobias-Packer dynamic was fun too.

I really like this one, but I can agree about the parts being greater than the sum. I think of Enemy of the World, where the connective tissue actually massively elevates the individual moments, where's here they kind of let them down, just a bit. Still think it's an awesome story but it was so close to being perfect!

OMG I love The Invasion. UNIT's first outing, Benton arrives as well as the return of Lethbridge Stewart.best looking Cybermen ever. One of the best villains and henchmen ever. Packer!! Superb location filming. Fantastic music - not the lift music in Vaughn’s office. And I agree the sliding door does get tiresome and the cyberplanner continues to be hard to understand. This story never outlives it’s welcome so don’t agree it is too long. Also pleased that they reuse the cyberships in A Good Man Goes To War. The regular team has now become the strongest I think we have had so far since the beginning. we have a very good script editor here with Derrick Sherwin. (adding his tour de force with Ep 1 of Mind Robber. Very underrated given his contribution to the evolution of the show

Terrance Dicks said many times over that The Invasion is too long. He was absolutely of the opinion that it would have been a fantastic 6-parter. But they had to fill 8 episodes. And it was just that simple. But i adore it. It's got such great characters and moments and images. I agree with your present evaluation pretty much! But if the second, third, and fourth episodes were condensed into one? Yeah, that's pretty much it.

I'm with you Chris - great cast, great direction, great location shooting, great use of the Cybermen in that it brings them on to make a bad situation worse rather than treating them as an event to be built to - but overlong and the whole is not as great as some of the parts. That said, I really do think Douglas Camfield bares a lion's share of the praise for how good this is - somebody like Morris Barry wouldn't have grasped the potential of the script visually - or brought back Kevin Stoney who is superb. Actually is this the first time Troughton's doctor goes up against a human antagonist who's on his level? Unless you count Salamander...

Although I really struggled with The Seeds of Doom recently even though I have enjoyed it in the past. So don’t feel bad about not liking a classic as much as one expects to.

I really like The Invasion it’s probably a little too long and the Cybermen are not as prominent as they could be. I think Tobias Vaughan is a wonderful villain he’s so sinister.

It's weird how we disagree. I'd like the story get to the Invasion faster while Chris thinks all the waffling is fine, the Invasion itself should be shorter. Zoe's three episode battle with an AI doorbell is OK? It's called "The Invasion", not "Operation: Exhaustion". Like most Troughton stories, I'd like to like it more than I do. "How long should a good Dr Who story be?" "As long as it is good." The Green Death is the Invasion done right; It front loaded its Invasion plot and made it parallel and subservient to its industrial plot.

I'd agree with the pacing issues; I think it's a rare thing that any story needs more than three hours of narrative time, so eight is a big stretch. All that said, like you, I think there character work and performances are fantastic. My only true gripe is the use of the Cybermen. They look formidable, but they're little more than robotic cannon fodder for Vaughn. It's 100% a Vaughn story, but not really a Cyberman story. The Cyber Co-ordinator is well handled, as is using emotion as a weapon, but the Cybermen themselves... Look great is all. - AFA p.s. if you fancy another eight episodes worth of story, you could do worse than check out the first of Candy Jar's UNIT books, which I only proofed this past week, The Vaughn Identity, out soon! ;-)

The Invasion seriously would have been done better with less than 8 parts it was originally intended to be 6 parts and had it been 6 parts or even 5 parts it would have worked much better in millions, tens of millions and hundreds of millions of times better than with 8 episodes and also the Cybermen were terribly utilised in the Invasion and they did not speak as much as they should have done unlike in stories preceeding and following the Invasion.

I think this is a good Doctor Who story, but a bad Cyberman story. They are barely in it. Them in London is iconic, but in general they barely have precens in the story
