George Motz actually covered this one, and if he is to be believed, this is mostly accurate! German “Hamburg steak” made its way over to the US during mass migrations from Europe, and during the world’s fair (like a lot of things, like ice cream cones) Hamburg steak was enjoyed between bread to make it portable for people walking around the festivities. That convention caught on and was later popularized by franchises like In-And-Out burger, and Ted’s in NH where the oldest known American “hamburger” was served on toast.

Thank you! As a Hamburger myself (notice the capitalized letter) it is actually tedious to have this conversation when it comes up. "Oh you are from Hamburg, you are a hamburger hahaha" F**k off. If I start explaining that hamburgers actually originate from Hamburg, weirdly, Murricans do not want to believe me. I also had the same thing happening with a Swede because the "hamburger joke" is repeated by every uncreative, ignorant pos, that learns where I'm from. There are some other theories where the hamburger could originate from, but unbiased as I am I say that ours is the most plausible given the mass immigration of Germans, Hamburg being a cosmopolitan port city and the world fair.

@Arrow_in_the_Knee
@Arrow_in_the_Knee 8 месяцев назад
@@umbertouno This can be discussed. Quote from Wikipedia: “The city of Frankfurt am Main claims the invention of the hot dog as its own. It is said to have been invented there in 1847 by the Coburg butcher Johann Georg Hehner; This dish was the forerunner of the Frankfurter sausage, which was introduced in 1852. The hot dog in its current form was invented in Coney Island in 1867 by German migrant Charles Feltman (1841-1910). The Hanoverian arrived in Brooklyn in 1856 and initially became a cake seller. He then put a grilled sausage in a bun and commissioned a wheelwright to construct a handcart with a hot plate from which he sold this fast food." @MrChristianDT

The closeness to the other theory may explain the origins, then. The other one is that some carnies invented it out of desperation at a fair in New York, when they ran out of sausage to sell. It was roughly about the same time. But they added in a whole bunch of other stuff to the patty to get it to cook right- including coffee & brown sugar & who knows what else & people were surprised and impressed. The main thing stopping them from catching on, here, was that ground beef was considered poor people food, so those carnies successfully tricked relatively wealthy people into admitting it was good & worth eating & they spread the word, but it was places like this who actually slowly began making them widely available to the average person.

If they were getting out of a U-Boat, there would be a port hole poking out of the water to get out of, so either the submarine flooded or they emerged from the water. Plus, I'm pretty sure this was before submarines.

There's this really bad joke in german and it goes like this: George Bush, Tony Blair and Gerhard Schröder (usually he's replaced by the current chancellor) are at the Baltic Sea Suddenly Blair says:"We have a submarine, that can stay submerged for 10 days straight, without needing to refuel" Bush says:"That's nothing! We can stay submerged for 30 days without needing to refuel" Schröder (or whatever chancellor you like) looks ashamed and stays quiet. Suddenly a submarine emerges, the hatch opens and a man is peeking out:"Heil H*tler! We need Diesel!"

To be fair, there were a few debatable ones like the first Assaultrifle, which was developed nearly simultaneously by the germans and the soviets.
