The most unrealistic thing about this movie is when that one person leaves no one else does. I feel like everyone knows that once the seal breaks and that one person decides to leave everyone else can take it as their cue to be able to make an excuse and leave lol

Not necessarily. The party wasn't "over" in that sense, they didn't even have dinner yet. She left because she was uncomfortable with a game, not a natural "welp, I gotta go pick up my kids thanks for having me" kind of way. That's hardly the *most* unrealistic thing in the movie.
@beau4588
@beau4588 4 года назад
I think that was very realistic. For just her to leave. It was a dinner party and people were getting reunited with everyone. Yes it had gotten weird but people give eachother the benefit of the doubt and I mean they were all close, its not like they were not going to try to understand or make the house guest comfortable and understood. Will was just seeing through the bullshit and was staying cause trauma, protecting his friends, proving a point to his ex and and and so why would he leave? This isnt a "I would've done this" movie, It's a "I was there in the moment movie" which is more honest imo.

I really liked this movie. I feel like the plot contrivances brought up are easily explained away. I also feel like if you watch the movie knowing that there is going to be gore you probably won't like it so much. I watched it completely blind, and was intrigued by the plot, never quite sure what was going to happen. I also really liked the tone, I know from a certain perspective it feels disorganized or like there is a lot of filler stuff that doesn't get used or doesn't make sense, but for me it made it feel more like a realistic gathering. I've never been to a party that wasn't at least a little bit awkward, even among close friends. The dialog and character interactions during the party reminded me a lot of Convergence, another movie I really love.
@alexanderbrown9124
@alexanderbrown9124 4 года назад
You speak the truth. I also believe it was supposed to be reminiscent of a realistic gathering. The main priority of the cultists was to have a good time with everyone and then peacefully kill them while covering up the little suspicions of Will. Obviously, this would lead to generic dinner conversation and anecdotes from the party-goers. A lot of subjects were “throw at the wall” because the characters were just being people. I enjoyed it.

I don't think that the cult is suppose to make sense. Most cults don't, anyway. Also, with the whole neighborhood having these cultists, I think its very probable that it was a slow spread of the cult's influence. Perhaps the occupants of one household heard about the cult and ventured to mexico. And once they returned, they spread the word. And slowly more and more people are duped into being converted by the cult. The film never implies that this was some kind of over night thing. It's really not that crazy when you think about it.

Well, cults never really make sense. That's how I view this. You look at it and go this doesn't make sense, their logic didn't make sense. And I'm going....... It's a cult. They normally don't make sense. Trying to apply our logic and reasoning to deranged cults is silly because by the very definition of cults, it doesn't make sense. So that's why I can look over some of the issues you mentioned. Now it is true that most cults typically do stick to their cult members and don't draw random strangers in like that. But if you really looked, I'm sure you can easily find cults that did indeed do that to people that weren't members of their cult.

This is one of the main inspirations in my writing group right now. There's political overtones but the undertone is all cultism, religious extremism and dealing w/ those types in society.. with criminals being the ones who are having to come to terms with the above-ground society bleeding into the underground. This movie doesn't seem like much on surface level, but it's a great platelet for how cults operate and how their ideologies influence decisions that typical people would deem insane. The Invitation is severely underrated.

Dude, your vids are mostly cool, but it always bugs me when you don't like a movie and try to butcher the explanation. Truth to tell, there was no explanation at all. You spent most of the video describing what happened and crapping on plot inconsistencies. I don't really understand why you got so hung up on said inconsistencies and paid no mind to the fact that the movie talks about grief and how we choose to handle it. There was so much to be said about the Will character, but your vid didn't run that deep (which I've seen in other videos) Some of the comments actually came up with pretty reasonable explanations if that's what you're all about. Point is, not everything has to sound logical or fall into place by your standards. Maybe movies like to leave things up in the air sometimes and there's still plenty of room to talk about other stuff. Anyway, keep up the good work

Uhmmmm... the point is not the intelligence behind the cult that bothers, I think, but how realistic it can be. It's difficult to believe someone would devote themselves to the point of commiting (forced) mass suicide when the cult does not provide what they think they need. The movie gives you ideas about what the cult is about but fails to make it relevant to the plot and characters.

@rebecalescano8209
@rebecalescano8209 4 года назад
@@iamslf I know about Him Jones and his cult but I haven't seen the movie you mention, so I don't know if it's done properly. But yeah... Jonestown is a good example of people buying into a cult and commiting to it to the point of mass (forced) suicide. So... for the story in The Visit to make sense t they could've shown how their lives changed because of the cult (pattern of speech, avoiding cuss words, dressing modestly, living simply, or having their house covered in art propaganda, etc) and shown their belief and loyalty to their leader for example saying Jim Jones says: blah blah blah, taking him and his word and perfect and law, saying this a LOT, or getting super angry when leader gets insulted. And if they had a conflict of heart in the mass suicide, they could've shown guilt or fear or anxiety during the dinner, have the female cult member have a mini break down in the bathroom and then pull out a photo of the leader or a symbol of the cult as a talisman to calm down. All these things and other ideas can help the audience understand how critical the cult is for them, how unbalanced they are because of the teachings and how close to mass suicide they are getting... so it doesn't feel out of left field. And the couple could've mentioned how they got into it thanks to a friend in the neighborhood, which could explain the other red lanterns in a more believable light. There's not much "showing" and even less "telling" in this movie... and whatever is shown or told is not enough to make the audience believe what they are seeing, so there's no emotionality involved, no fear for the protagonists, no compassion or hatred towards the cultists, no anxiety over the red lanterns... nothing... a great failure in a movie

This movie isn’t as straight forward as you think it is. when it comes to why they would kill their friends even if they didn’t outwardly come out with some sort of past tragedy. that is foreshadowed at the beginning of the film when will hits the coyote, it’s a mercy killing. To these cult members everyone is suffering rather they believe so or not so they invited all of their closest friends as a mercy killing to go to the other side with them. they thought they were being good friends. And everyone in the neighborhood wouldn’t have to go to Mexico just to be a cult member that doctor had made numerous videos and a lot of the people in the neighborhood could’ve seen those videos and had been brainwashed either by wills ex or other people who had bought into the cult these aren’t crazy leaps to take to enjoy the film you just have to pay more attention

Its great to see this comment. This is also reiterated by the fact that they intend to kill everyone AND themselves, plus there is a dialogue between David and Eden (?) where she gets cold feet and they talk about free from the pain. It is also backed up a little by real cults, where people get so convinced that they are following the “right” path and their notions are true, that they commit mass suicides.

I really enjoyed the movie though. It's supposed to be about grief and how the idea of "it will all end soon" can be really soothing to someone who lost the will to live, the boy's death wasn't supposed to be a plot point, but a device for the grief. You can see this movie in many ways among them: about people not accepting their loss; about seemingly happy people harboring immense pain to a breaking point; about how vulnerable people can be while in pain. The why bring innocent people to the murder/suicide party is similar to how people kill their loved ones before killing themselves "in order to protect them". The movie is basically about people avoiding facing their emotions, and how it destroys everyone around them.

Honestly I love the movie. Then ending means that the aliens were giving humans a moral test and it shows that many humans actually chose to save the woman who were pregnant and the children in their groups.

Can we hear your take on "The killing of a sacred deer,". It's on Netflix and it's a very intriguing movie that is left up to the viewer to decide what it means.

Tyler Skeen eh those movies/anything really aren’t a lot of people’s cup of tea but they have their worth
@mxyhem5461
@mxyhem5461 4 года назад
Tyler Skeen it's produced by a24 so a lot of their films are gonna be "artsy fartsy" since they're giving chances to smaller creators with great visions to get their name out there. Besides if you actually wanted to dissect the movie you'll see that there's lots of hints that show to different interpretations of what the boy really is or if anything is even real. Plus countless amounts of symbolism with different shots in the film especially the opening scene. Like someone else said, they're not for anyone especially the ones who don't wanna appreciate good film work.

I was honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed the circle. It’s not an amazing film but it’s good for what it is, a movie with no background and very little plot. I would love an explanation though!

Nah tbf she was being a bit of a bitch first half of the movie, didn’t find her very supportive seen as they’d just arrived so he was within his rights to go off and see what was going on. In the ending she redeemed herself though
