He is right though. The way humans are meant to be played makes it a lot easier to feel the horror vibe. Enforced first person gives you that claustrophobic feeling. Scarce ammunition and bad night vision capabilities will make you feel vulnerable. As Zaguer explained: Gore alone is not a horror feature. In horror games / movies it's more of a stylistic tool to creat anticipation of imminent danger.

You could argue that the true denomination of the isle would be poorly executed survival-suspense, because uncertainty and fear permeate a lot of the gameplay in the isle, unfortunately, the feeling of suspense has to be renewed constantly or it wears off, and the masive empty map does set up the suspense, but also doesnt allow the player to keep feeling on edge because half an hour hss gone by and nothing has hapened

I have only around 20 hours on the Isle and I don't understand the game very well but I enjoy it. When alone it can be quite ominous and I have been jump scared by things both harmful and not. Survival suspense is more plentiful in my opinion when you're newer to the game.

I feel like the horror element really won't be achieved until humans, lore related creatures(such as strains) and straight up lore elements are added in(whatever those may be granted if what I heard about the lore in years past remain the same and at this point who the hell knows). There you have scifi horrors, the human weakness in comparison to even the base dinosaurs, and other abominations like the cannibals. In other words see you in 20 years. Jokes aside it does seem like the foundational blocks of a horror game are there, but as you stated it's just more of an intense survival game right now and will most likely be for some time. It's not a bad thing at all really, but the work needs to be put in before It could even be considered a "light" horror game which in all honesty I do hope they succeed at.

it's always the delusion of the isle's players, it's always "when they add" "when this update drops" but we've already seen how the isle has failed many times, night vision and night in general is trash, the "horrfiic gut-churning gore system that will make you wanna look away" they promised they'd implement with update 6 was a total failure, and it was nothing more than an amature attempt to make the game at the very least gory. We're already at update 6.5 at the game is still not enjoyable
@DarkDiamond-jx2gx

I agree the isle isnt a horror game. Well, atleast not right NOW. Playing as an animal really isnt scary at all (except for the deino jumpscares lmao) however i imagine playing from the perspective of a human mercenary would be pretty damn scary. You are locked to 1st person view, you do not have night vision, besides a flash light (and assuming this is the far future and the game is 100% feature complete), not only do you have to worry about dinosaurs, you have to worry about the tribals, who are barely humans themselves and will likely play as much into the horror theme as the dinosaurs will, plus the strains! I like the video, and I 100% agree with it, I just dont think the game is horror ATM (plus, I'm disappointed by the lack of blood in-game, really hoping they add more, lol)
@donzaibanzai7746
@donzaibanzai7746 Год назад
I can see the Isle having a horror feel when the human perspective comes. When playing as a dino its a survival game. But when you are a human, needing flash lights or torches to see at night and you start hearing calls of dilos/troodons then i can see it moving into the horror experience.
@Qbliviens
@Qbliviens Год назад
I think the idea of the Isle being a horror game is mostly tied to humans. Being a human on an island full of unknown creatures, exploring a dense forest by night, hearing weird sounds in the distance and suddnely being jumped by a predator. That is the concept. So right now TI is not a horror game and when humans being added it would only be if you play as a human first before becoming familiar with all the dinosaurs. The fear of the unkown, once you can identify all the sounds it loses it's horror aspect.
@StoicForce

Proper human implimentation is what will provide the "horror" aspect for this game.

This is true which is why it’s so odd to me that they haven’t even implemented a permanent version of human gameplay yet when it is THE game mode that will function the most as survival horror. That’s like the reverse of making all of Alien Isolation but the Xeno isn’t even in the game. It’s the most essential part of the game that could classify it as horror and it just isn’t there.

I think calling the isle a horror game is like calling minecraft a horror game. the main point is not to scare, at least it doesn't feel like it, though there are spooky elements. we'll see when the game is complete, but as it stands it's basically a typical survival game. being the first and most influential dinosaur survival game is enough of a selling point imo, no need to insist on it being "horror." I think the horror tag is just kinda trendy right now.
@gendygoblin8391
@gendygoblin8391 Год назад
I really hope they make a separate game mode that puts you on a version of the island as a human with AI Dino’s running around while other players go out as strains to kill, eat and grow in order to fight the players. Then Tribals and regular Dino Players can interact on their own map without having OP players come in to fuck up their interactions.
@antonioandrade3751
@antonioandrade3751 Год назад
"Horror requires de player to feel vulnerable and powerless" the only moment where I can imagine that happening for the dinos is when the strains are added, and for humans they will add those monsters that they call "cannibals" if I recall correctly. Besides those creatures, there will never be another element in the game that will make us feel vulnerable and powerless.
@RBergljotisson
@RBergljotisson Год назад
Bare in mind, The Isle is planned for an ending, implying there is a story to come, and with a story, the genre of horror can be implemented, especially with the addition of humans and how they're so vulnerable yet so powerful, and that's what creates fear, picture yourself shrouded in a forest, with limited vision thanks to your flashlight and all you have to defend yourself is a base handgun, and you're hearing bush rustling or if you're in a small boat cruising down a river during a storm and out pops an aggressive Deinocheirus out of nowhere just to swipe away at your pathetic life, or if you're repairing a structure only for a pack of Troodon to haunt you and eventually kill you as you finish fixing the base up. These are all possible future outcomes of the isle and I think that people don't realise what the isle will come to, and it isn't a traditional horror game since everything is organic as everything has its own mind making the predictability hard since the dinosaurs are players and there are so many, you wont know which will come for you next, nor will you know what will it do to you, whether it plays on your hysteria or ruins your progress as a human. The Isle isn't finished, and it probably won't be soon, but there will be a time when it is.
@Egobyte83
@Egobyte83 Год назад
I would also argue that the map isn't too big since V3 was almost exactly the same size (V3 was 15x15 km, Spiro is 16x16), but rather, the fact that we can chose where to spawn makes population concentration arbitrary, since most people chose to spawn at center. V3 had the better idea, with multiple spawnpoints scattared all over the island where you just spawned at randomly. Sure it would take a while for people to find each other, but it allowed for much better flow of traffic and migration. Not to mention all the dangers that you had to face in order to find your friends.

Absolutely like other comments said. This game is intended to be a horror experience once finished. We can't cast final judgment on an incomplete product. It's definitely not a battle royale and not a social chatroom. Survival and the fear of terrifying creatures hunting you is planned. Yet not implemented causing the game in It's current state to take on a temporary, stagnant form.

It was a horror game when progression mode was the main mode. You had to survive and each min rewarded you with 1 point. Each point could be spent on a bigger creature and you would have an easier time higher up in the food chain. But if you got killed you had to start over from the bottom again. That itself was horror and you really were afraid of getting caught by carnivores. Now they left that mode vehind and turned horror into growth simulator

Also using this vid as a jump to DILO and what we know about it's new venom would be cool. While the isle misses the mark on most horror aspects the DILO certainly doesn't. Dilo venom is going to limit vision and cause auditory and visionary hallucinations. On top of dilo most likely being a bleeder and venom itself draining stamina, this may lead to much of the roster feeling helpless and terrified, as you mentioned in what defines a horror game.

7:22 The isolation can be intentional but that doesn’t mean it’s good or engaging. Dead Space’s isolation builds on your fear of the unknown and the hopeless atmosphere. Death Stranding’s map and isolation makes encounters feel more intense since you are alone while providing an engaging landscape both visually and mechanically. The Isle is visually repetitive, and elements that could be engaging are just an inconvenience like a cliff or dense jungle (you can’t see shit) or stagnant like water sources that don’t change so there is no reason to seek new sources or avoid current ones in the case of flooding or a natural disaster. Crocs literally don’t have to go anywhere.

In my eyes, The Isle is at heart a Dinosaur survival game that wants to branch out into the Horror genre. Yeah sure the juvi raptor hiding in a bush in the dead of night from an adult Cerato actively looking for it, is probably going to be scary for that player, but that’s just the nature of a survival game, your going to be attacked, and your not always going to live. The idea that Subnautica is a scary game is kinda odd. Perhaps I'm just unaffected by it. It's the same reaction I have when people describe BioShock as a horror game. The threats in Subnautica aren't even designed to evoke fear in the same way BioShock's are and yet scary isn't how I would describe it either. BioShock is a masterpiece for other reasons than its horror elements. Games that actually unnerved me are the Condemned games, The Suffering from way back in the day, and a more recent example would be Oakwood a very short but a very well executed tension builder that never lets up.

Horror isn't really a thing that is so clear cut. It is one of the hardest genres to succeed at because so many things need to come together. Immersion plays a massive part to this. Without immersion there can not be horror. The fact we do not get human blood doesn't really matter. Once you are fully immersed you will get the desired effect. The only thing fighting against immersion right now is player behavior. Aka mix/mega packing. Because those behaviors immediately tell the player it's a game, they are what pulls you out of immersion. And that is the reason if any why the isle will not succeed at its goal. Also about the growth. You cannot have horror if you do not let the players relax. Every horror game is paced to some extent. Amnesia, alien isolation, outlast all have moments of calm in between moments of absolute hell. It is necessary, because your brain can only be in fearful state for so long. So players not fearing so much at adult stages isn't that bad of a thing. Great video btw!

Yeah, no. I can't even come up with any arguments for the Isle being anything closely related to horror. Hell, DayZ is more aptly classified as survival-horror than the Isle, and DayZ is so far from scary that it's not even funny. In the Isle, focus is on surviving, true, but also nesting, scavenging, travelling, socializing. The whole premise is that there is an ecosystem where you play as a creature that is part of that system. Never once do I feel like I am gonna get a jump scare or freak out from ominous ambience. And the whole thing about humans being implemented (which is a dumb move from the get-go) is still only a part of the game. Besides, the inclusion of guns will severely curtail any element of fear that might potentially be a thing.

I think the video could have been ended at about 1:52 when he says that horror games are intentionally scary. That's the whole argument, or at least the bit that matters, the rest is a strawman. Also Intent hardly matters. If it did then this could all be settled by opening up steam and checking the tags. Horror games are games that cause the player to be afraid. The isle does that. Later at around 8:44 he says that "fear is about the unknown and your inability to defend yourself" 9:25 he confirms that this is true of envrima while the player is young. Thus envrima is horror sometimes. This is true of the rest of the genre as well. Young creatures as well as solo creatures against packs do not have the power to defend themselves and definitely not like doom. I think he messed up some terms. Claustrophobia is fear of tight spaces, of being trapped. Agoraphobia would be fear of open spaces. That is the primary fear the isle plays to. Quietly wandering the woods where you can see little but little can see you is probably more comfortable than an open field in the middle of a forest. You can see nothing past the treeline and anything past the treeline could see you. Another player who is just as smart and much larger could be waiting in any bush, behind any tree, or just out of sight. Players are encouraged to move in such a way that they avoid attention lest they get hunted. Yet another mid video. The isle is a horror game sometimes.

Bro just wants to make content. 4:49 could easily say that about Subnautica too. When you're all alone in the forest and you see and hear nothing then a random large player pops up and try's to kill you would defiantly put fear into a player specially at night. as you say "the cruel savage nature of the wild" is exactly what makes animal survival horror because you are put into the "shoes" of a creature who can mutilated at any point. This is just a opinion video, like the devs are the ones who said its going to be a survival horror game, so thats what they will turn it into, games not even half way finished.

I feel that the game dev has gone in the wrong direction for the isle for a long time and should sell the rights of the game to a developer that will actually do something amazing with the game I feel they have no direction at all for the game and it's more likely the game in the next 10 years yes 10 years still will have no direction or a competent team to do the game the justice it deserves

i think to think that the isle is a horror game but more of a "nature is horrifing" as reailty??? nature is fucking scary with the animals that live in it, as ofc the devs give the playables many animal like themes (teno is pretty much a horse , carno is bull , ceras are the lions , troodon and many others are like hyanas but dinosaurs)

Is it ok to say that because the Gali's were added, I have fear of them as even a Teno or a Cera. Like, I know this might sound bad to some people, but me and a friend of mine were playing as an adult Teno (my friend), and me as an adult Cera. A herd of 3 Gali's killed both of us. Neither of us could really get good hits and if we did, they would run away and heal in a bush. Gali's scare me and my friend. They are the ultimate trolls, and they know how to karate kick you to death. Does that count as "horror" or not? Idk? It's horror to me. XD

I agree with you. The overall tone of the game just isn't horror. It has it's tense moments, but these are just that: moments. But even tho that is how I feel about the game, I'm pretty sure there are people that see it differently and that is because horror can be very subjective. Also a lot of confidence comes from experience. As a new player, just thrown into this game, you will probably more often feel a sense of dread, compared to someone that has 1000+ hours in the game and knows the map like it's their own home. In the end I'm just glad it isn't much of a horror game. Maybe that will change in the future. Maybe when you try to survive as a properly fleshed out human. Maybe with gateway it will have more places that are dark and shady in their atmosphere. The scariest things rn, despite trying to drink or to cross a river must be boars as a juvi. They don't care where you hide. They will find you. And they want your blood.

The isle may not be made as a horror game but god damn if deinos haven't given me PTSD. Once I scared myself so bad when drinking that my knee hit my desk. There was no deino, and I was completely fine, my dino just grew a little and my pov changed LMFAO

Unless devs have plan to implement some AI driven (and I mean really decent AI behaviour) unplayable strains that can hunt down any player then the horror aspect is barely achievable. U can achieve some horror aspects by playing human but then again - this is just one sided approach and how many ppl are going to play humans anyway? Personally, I cannot be scared of other players in this game. Deinos lunge, charging carno or cera powering the RMB attack.. This does not provide any horror element to my gameplay since 1. I can paly those things too. 2. I know this is a player that can be 10yr old kiddo irl. Game definitely has tension of some sort but it is not horror-ish. Now mindlessly wandering AI creature big enough to insta kill everything in mid category and brawl all that is in apex category with really high chance to outclass even them could be something u need to worry about, no matter what animal are you playing - this is something that could work in terms of horror but at the same time would probably take chunks from other aspects of gameplay.

it’s their whole marketing scheme they make these grandiose plans and ideas and never deliver them. They hype up all these amazing ideas that will never happen so people will buy it then when they get called out they say well that’s not on the roadmap so your an idiot. I mean read the isle steam description it’s insane the level of bullshit these guys get away with. I wouldn’t recommend this game if it cost a penny👎

The problem with Spiro is its design. It's a cluttered mess, the river system sucks, there are no general good hotspots or areas worth hanging at, people are moving 24/7 because of their diets and how much of a pressure it puts on your character, its to the point where it ruins how enjoyable the game is. Ontop of that, there's no global chat or functioning tab menu, you cant group other players or talk to anyone unless they're next to you and the same species. It limits the ability to make friends, scary encounters or threatening moments. Ontop of that ASWELL, there's such a small and weak roster of dinos rn its trash, ambient sounds are boring, the AI are not scary, deinosuchus got nerfed so hard and looks annoyingly small to the point where nothing fears fighting them or going near water
@colinrogers9896
@colinrogers9896 Год назад
i mean the isle is trying to be a horror game, weather or not the devs succeed with that right now doesn't really matter as the game is still in development, so making the argument that a game is not a horror game when it isn't even complete kinda gets on my nerves. if you look at where the game is headed, the isle will resemble something of a horror game when it is complete. that's not to say it will only be a horror game (it's still at it's core a survival game) but compared to something like POT or BOB, the isle will noticably stand out among those two just based off fear factor alone.
@Nrex117
@Nrex117 Год назад
They also kind of ignored the fact that The Isle has more playstyles than just surviving as a giant ancient animal. I am pretty sure the devs intend for the human gameplay to be the survival horror aspect of the game and not the non-human gameplay.
@HHHIII4363
@HHHIII4363 Год назад
@@Nrex117considering the way The Isle is showcased, that being around dinosaurs, the fact that humans will encompass the horror half of the game is somewhat secondary. I mean you can have a level of an RPG be horror, but that doesn't make the whole RPG horror. If The Isle only has 1 part of it as horror, then the game can't be considered horror, only part of it. The core that the game builds its systems around is survival. Even for humans, the ability to fight back against your opponents is there via guns. I reckon that if The Isle wants to be a horror, it needs to base its environment around horror, not its pvp.
@BlinkingTwin
@BlinkingTwin Год назад
Even incomplete games that are actually horror have a solid core for a horror within them, provided you actually play them regularly. Sons of The Forest in Early Access was still VERY obviously a survival horror game. You can't slap one "scary" element into a game and call it horror and even if the game is in development, by this point in development a game that is supposed to be horror should have been built with that genre in mind at it's core. The Isle wasn't.
