The Italian Mafia: A Danger for Europe? 

Carabinieri is not the anti-mafia police, it's the military police, which in italy covers the same roles as the civilian police (a.k.a. polizia)

For the first time I see a fairly good and concrete depiction of the Mafia problem made by a foreigner. I am glad you mentioned the history of it and the concrete danger it brings. Outside of Italy, especially in northern Europe the mafia concept is so far to be understood, yet mafia is very present there in money laundry and drug trafficking which has main markets in countries like UK, Nederlands, Belgium, Germany, etc. In my humble opinion, in order to beat Mafia is necessary to cut the connection between the foreign tentacles and its motherland, take serious steps towards drugs regulation and legalization, main source of income of cartels, build a serious anti mafia law system in Europe, based for example on the very advanced Italian consitution, which includes crimes that are not considered as such in other EU and world countries

Thanks for the video. I really wish people understood the scope and gravity of the issue. I'm Sicilian, we've been living with this constant weight on our backs, this pistol pointed at our heads for as long as we've lived. People outside Italy underestimate this issue, ignore our struggle with it and even go so far as to fetishize those criminals.

The claim that the US thought the mafia incarcerated in Italy, when they invaded during WWII, were simply political dissidents is laughable. They were well aware of what the mafia was, having experience with the American version during prohibition and actively engaged with it so as to aid in their invasion of Italy, striking deals with figures such as Lucky Luciano to gain alliances with the Sicilian mafia.

I'm Southern Italian, and this is one of the best foreign videos I've seen on the sheer power of 'Ndràngheta" (stress on the first A) so far. Another VERY important thing to understand is that mafia bosses still managed to command from behind jailbars, giving instructions to their visiting relatives every week. The introduction of the article 41-bis in our penal code, also known as "carcere duro" (tough jail) introduced the notion that, if you were found guilty of associazione mafiosa, you could not use devices which can put you in contact with outside people. So the Italian state equipped itself with the very instrument to cut the mafiosi influence from jail AND to make them confess and bring more people to justice. Now this very measure, which is not torture but simply doesn't allow communications between mafiosi inmates and the outer world, has been called out by the European Court in Strasbourg as "lesive of some inmates' rights". 41-bis has been so far one of the best pieces of legislation to oppose the spread of mafia, and as a matter of fact should be adopted also by the other states that are beginning now to struggle with the problem themselves. As a southern italian i have watched tons of videos on the matter to understand what foreigns think mafia is and how it works, even from big channels and professional jurnalists yet you're the first one that made me think "wow this guy did the right researches, he knows what he's talking about and knows how to explain it to someone who doesn't know anything on the subject". outstanding job, big compliments, you gained a new subscribed right away my friend

Correction: Americans didn't believe that Mafia people were political prisoners, they knew quite well what mafia was. In fact, they had Lucky Lucian meet with the local mafia to facilitate the Americans landing in Sicily. After the war, the mafia people who helped the Americans were nominated mayors and mps in Sicily:).

I found everything very accurate and well-made! Great informative video 👍 the only things I would add/correct are that many estimates of the economic influence of the mafias are inflated, even by Europol, because often traffics conducted by the mafia are confused or aggregated with traffics by groups the mafias collaborate with, which are very different in structure. Secondly, mafias are registering a negative trend all over the world. Both Cosa Nostra and 'Ndrangheta, for example, have been losing numbers for a while, especially because of their apparatus of symbols and rituals, which needs a specific subcultural background which is less and less widespread. Finally, Sacra Corona Unita is not a "mafia" stricto sensu anymore, since it has lost most of that "traditional" apparatus and is composed of several small criminal groups which are substantially separate. Apart from this, great job! Keep up the good work 😁

Actually today the situation is much better. More criminal organisations are being hunted down by the state and day by day the mafia has become more and more weak through the last decades. But on the other hand the south of italy is still less developed than the centre or the north, due to this where investments lack and the state fails, those organisations thrive. As an Italian and a European I hope a better future for everyone in the continent will be built with cooperation

i mean i get that we are not the greatest most reliable country in the world but it wouldn't hurt to see and hear some of the good sides of my country highlited in a video from time to time, we are still the 8th most powerful economy in the world and a big contributor to european wealth. Another fantastic video on a current history of Italian, the animation is still creative and engaging. I find your pronunciation to be very good regardless whether it is accurate or not for I am tired of very poor pronunciation from American/British speaker's and their high self opinions within Europe.

They don't "threaten" to spread to the North of the country. They've been here for some 50 year at least.

While the content of the video is fairly accurate and well explained I do wish you called it something different from the Italian Menace. Not sure if it's supposed to be click bait but the assumption that can be made here is that Italy, and Italians by derivation, are a menace to Europe due to the presence of the Mafia in the country. From a pan-european channel I would have expected a bit more care. The Mafia Menace would have worked just as fine narrowing it down to the real issue and avoiding throwing 60 million people in the mix. I say this because Italians are the first ones to suffer the consequences of the Mafia and while Hollywood idealizes it we need to understand that thousands of lives have been lost and ruined by their illegal operations. Great efforts have been done to stop it, as mentioned by the video, but unfortunately their political infiltrations make them incredibly resilient. Add to it that mafias have come to existence due to foreign occupation by Spanish, French, Austrians and Germans overlords and the joke is on us.

Whenever I think about the Mafia problem I fail to find a solution that is not the "Cesare Mori" method. Italian Mafias are cruel organizations that are not shy of killing the ones in their way and their families, so something radical is needed. At the same time, an operation of this kind reminds me so much of the kind of stuff that used to happen in totalitarian states, where the State turns against their own citizens and deports them far far away for the sake of the Utopia, with a disregard for the innocents caught in the crossfire.

As an EU citizen who have lived in the USA for 3 years I say EU rules are too soft and I doubt the EU could ever stop the spread of organised criminal groups in this current status. PS: Sure the welfare social security net in EU countries mostly stop petty crime and I believe that's the main reason crime is lower in the EU than in the USA but organised crime is different and you cannot stop career criminals with just a welfare system and soft judiciary system. So I believe the EU needs to toughen up a bit in this case.
