From 1971, the album, " The Morning After", Richard Salwitz, ( Magic Dick), the quintessential harmonica man, displays his phenomenal skills to the max on this song. This has become true harmonica standard. The funk and soul showered from this instrument is unbelievable. The backing of the honky tonk piano is the icing on the cake. Unbelievable greatness on display.🎶🎶🎶 Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Dave. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Peter Wolf (once married to Faye Dunaway) on vocals, and Magic Dick on harmonica. You had to see them in concert to believe how freaking great they were. Lucky me I got to see them three times.
On the same album the JGB cover the Supremes' Where Did Our Love Go. It really captures the fun vibe that was going on in Detroit's Cobo Hall when they made this recording.
There are SO MANY Geils' tunes to do here, most of them live versions !!! They were one of the greatest live acts ever, and were a killer party band. Check out "Musta Got Lost" (live from Blow Your Face Out), "Detroit Breakdown" and "Where Did Our Love Go" (both from previous mentioned live album. It's shown right on the RU-vid thumbnails for those tunes.) Also, "Wild Man" and "One Last Kiss" (studio versions from Sanctuary album, also shown as thumbnail.)
Despite being from Worcester, outside Boston, they recorded their THREE live albums in Detroit. That's what a great party city Detroit was for live music.
Really a Boston band - the original jug band trio were students in Worcester (WPI) early on but the electric band took shape in Boston. Half of Blow Your Face Out was recorded at the old Boston Garden, so not 100% Motor City.
Bought this on vinyl when it came out. Played it 1,000 times. It never gets old. Magic Dick was influenced by the great Sonny Terry. Look for Sonny's Squall or Hootin' the Blues. You'll see what I mean.
@@jovanisanfemio7641that was the album that tore the band apart. Wolf wanted the band to go Pop over the bands' objections. There were a few decent tracks on it but it was mostly awful, imo.
Brings back memories! After quitting my job in an auto plant in Detroit and getting an apartment in Cocoa Beach in the early 70's, my new neighbors next door just bought this album and played this cut over and over. Two of them were just out from the Vietnam War. One played the guitar and one was a tuba player who attended Julliard before being drafted into the Army. Couldn't believe any one could play an tuba that fast. It was great!
I'm glad that you enjoyed this, Clint. I just wanted to let you know that you are most welcome. Yes, Harri's review was quite memorable. Thanks again, Harri.
I saw this band twice in the early 70's here in NYC. Both times at the old Fillmore East. These guys were a great live band. Better performers than they were album makers.
I love love love these guys. I’m proud to say they are from the Boston area, as am I. This was a great album. This song is amazing with Magic Dick on harmonica. Now we need another one with Peter Wolf’s ripping vocals. Thanks for a great request Dave. I knew Harri would love this and he did not disappoint. 🌺✌️
Hi Boston Debbie, glad that you enjoyed this and all previous listening experiences from this great band. Showcasing Peter Wolf's vocals is a perfect next step. Hmmmmm.
They were one of the best live bands of all time. Saw them six or seven times. Great shows. Edgar Winter opened one show. That was a concert I will always remember.
This entire album "Full House" is a killer. I saw them twice before they went commercial and they simply wore your ass out. Non-stop, full speed ahead rock and roll
saw these guys at a nothing college in new hampshire in '72 - outdoors no charge - franklin pierce college. they were great - it was before a lot of people had heard of them. after hearing them all my friends ran out and got there album 'the morning after' - still my favorite album by them with the original recording of whammer jammer.
You need to hear "House Party" song from "Blow Your Face Out". There are live versions of all these songs on RU-vid. You just have to find them but you did start in the right place.
I've listened to J.Geils Band since the Full House Album came out. We formed a band and had a fantastic harmonica player. I think one of our sets was all J.Geils band music. It was fun stuff. Get hopped up on music it's better than all the rest..
They call him "Magic Dick." You can figure out why. Maybe it's a double on Tandra about both his Harmonia playing, and something else... One of the best 70s party Bands ever. Thanks Harri.
I was fortunate to see them live a couple of times (including right around the time Live Full House came out) - one of my all time favourite live bands. Kind of like George Thorogood - not stadium rockers, more like "big time bar bands". Just a lot of fun.
Richard Salwitz (aka Magic Dick) still performs at 78 years young. Check out his live performance at SPAH 2023. And he is one heck of a nice man. If you dig a little deeper, you'll find Magic Dick and Shun Ng and that is some good stuff too.
Recorded in where else?......DETROIT !!!!!! Although living in Boston, the band had always considered Detroit their second home because of their enormous popularity here. Two of their three live albums were recorded in Detroit at various venues. The third live album was recorded in Detroit and Boston.
More great harmonica? Check out Corky Siegel. Love All Day To You or Hey,Billie Jean. I saw JGeils several times first in 1974. Another time in 1977 at Soldier Field with Climax Blues Band, Foghat, and headliners ELP. Two weeks later at same venue Pink Floyd…the seventies,oh my we were living in a special time for music.
The 'LIVE FULL HOUSE' album is excellent from the beginning to the last song. First I Look At The Purse, Homework, Pack Fair, And Square, Whammer Jammer, Hard Drivin' Man, Serves You Right To Suffer. and Cruisin' For A Love. That's Mr. Magic Dick on the Lickin' Stick (Harmonica), Peter Wolf is the singer - the band is killer.
This song is 53 years old , released in 1971 . Where have you been ? if you want to see something funny on RU-vid , go to " The 3 Stooges do Whammer Jammer "
Want a good visual of a really great harmonic player with similar energy? Check out the live performance of _Dixie Diner_ by *Larry Raspberry and the High Steppers* featuring _Greg "Fingers" Taylor_ (Jimmy Buffett's main harmonica player)
Thank you, Jim and I could agree more. However, a video must have a minimum of 200k views to be played and reviewed. I could not locate one. However, I will submit a few other harmonica greats in the upcoming months. Feel free to make a suggestion.
