The Jackie Look: Branding a Presidency Through Fashion
www.imamuseum.org/talk/jackie-...
What unspoken messages do First Ladies send with fashion? And how did the unforgettable Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy break the mold to present her husband's candidacy and presidency as progressive and modern? Sandy McLendon, design historian and editor of jetsetmodern.com, and former contributor and senior editor at Modernism Magazine, takes a visual tour through Jackie's strategic choices: hiring Hollywood costume designer Oleg Cassini; embracing the slim sheath dress and fuss-free pillbox hat (contrasted with Mamie Eisenhower's lacy, girlish selections); and selecting-down to the detail-trim, elegant gowns suitable for superpower diplomacy. McLendon unpacks the elements of "The Jackie Look" so desired by millions of women of the time, and influential to pop culture then and now.

What really amazes me about Jackie is that she was so YOUNG as first lady. She did very well.

I found it very rude and offensive that they were laughing when he said Jackie looked nothing like Mamie Eisenhower and Eleanor Roosevelt, like they're making fun of them. Just because they were not a fashion icon doesn't mean they were not great first ladies. Do you even know how astonishingly amazing and wise Eleanor Roosevelt is, she was the First Lady of the World, she fought so hard for civil rights movements many of which are being taken by people nowadays for granted. She was a pioneer for human rights movement when the time was hard.

Khin Zar Lwin Thein I Eleanor Roosevelt had great great great knowledge and could command a room. she was no fashion icon but she was as captivating as Jackie. maybe Eisenhower however was not well she was a bit crass period She didn't carry herself like a first lady that we would like her to be and as for President Truman's wife Bess Truman she tried to stay in the background. neither one of those two women really measured up to Eleanor or Jackie. each in their own way

Fashion and beauty is the topic here .... But if you want to talk politics about Eleanor Roosevelt, do you consider it virtuous for her husband to use tax-payer's money to pay people to do "make work," ie paint crude murals in public spaces, meanwhile trying to convert the U.S. government to tax-and-spend, and then get us into WWII which killed hundreds of thousands of Americans??? Eleanor was a lesbian communist/socialist. She mentored quasi-reporter Martha Gellhorn, wife of writer Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway loved Cuba. Gellhorn, who idolized Eleanor, hated the middle class and "liked to be where everything was being blown up." So I think people were laughing in the video because there are MANY differences between the two ladies, not just their looks.

I remember travelling with my Father to Europe when I was about ten and he wore a suit and I had to wear my Sunday best too and I said why? My Father who spoke many languages and had travelled said well because people just treat you better if you dress well so that may be why I opted to work in fashion years later.

There's nothing to wonder about... Jackie was a society girl who was raised with style, and... she studied in France, what was then the fashion capital of the world. She truly developed her style after meeting Oleg Cassini (who was ITALIAN, by the way), who was totally devoted to her. It's true that her classy style and demeanor were used strategically, because Joe Kennedy thought his son, John Kennedy, was a good candidate for president but rough around the edges.

Cassini was Italian on his maternal side, but Russian on his paternal side. His brother wrote the society column Cholly Knickerbocker prior to and during the Kennedy Administration.

Since I was eight years old, I adored Jacqueline Kennedy. I started two scrapbooks and cut out every picture that I could find of her. I am well aware that she wore her favorite pink suit many times from different photographs I saw of Jackie around the White House. Especially the one where she is stooped down in the Rose Garden in her pink suit trying to hold John-John on her lap. Whatever became of her pink pillbox hat. Thank you for this wonderful memory and well thought out presentation.

Her your of the White House was televised in the UK and I was enthralled. I was 11 years when JFK was shot but continued to follow Jacqueline. I think most young people have a style icon. Nowadays it is Riahnon or Lady Gaga. My icons were Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Jean Shrimpton. I still admire them to this day. I didn't think his presentation was so awful. You can practice all you want but if you are not a natural speaker it remains a difficult and nerve wracking experience. An experience that I have gone through many times and I am always pleased to be on the other side of the fence.

So the story about her ordering this black mourning dress and getting it in 4 days is a fabrication ?? A lot of what he shows and talks about is interesting, for sure. I do not think he is a professional presenting or lecturer, since towards the end, he coughs profusely and does not even bother to say " excuse me " . So, this person is not a professional, but does seem to have a lot of good information that he is presenting. I have watched countless videos about Jacqueline Kennedy, but never one like this. I did enjoy it, even if it wasn't all exactly historically correct.

This was a very interesting presentation of Mrs Kennedy’s wardrobe. What was her choise to wear as the 1st Lady. And also how she changed to wear another type of clothes after the tragical assasination of the great American President John F. Kennedy. It was interesting to hear, that the American union of garment produsers, made it almost impossible for her to wear. European Couture fashion. Mr Oleg Cassini was an important person during this period of history. Today many stars they wear jeans with holes and so on. Time has changed. One can ask what good style and class-clothing is al about these days? Jackie was one great Lady to remember as a women of quality in all senses. I must say, that a star like Taylor Swift, also has style. So all is not bad nowadays. A great time to remember the time then during the -50th, -60th, -60th, -70th.

I am a historian by profession, so let's take a step back here. The speaker could have spent a little more time refining his presentation and brought out the fact that Mrs. Eisenhower, Mrs. Truman and Eleanor Roosevelt were much older First Ladies and reflected the times their husbands held office. Mrs. Roosevelt was First Lady during the Great Depression, had she dressed like a fashion plate the backlash would have been so great I guarantee FDR would not have served 4 terms as President. She was a remarkable First Lady, and is my top 3 favorites-Jackie Kennedy being first, then Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, then Mrs. Dolley Madison. Mrs. Truman was Second Lady during much of WWII, becoming First Lady upon the sudden death of FDR. She, along with Mrs. Roosevelt, represented the wartime Home Front support system our fighting men needed-a motherly figure who was making sure the home fires were burning and things were being taken care of at home so their minds were on defeating Fascism and Imperialism (sad how today the former has rooted itself on our own soil-for shame, and we defeated that kind once and we'll do it again on home ground if we have to!). This, too, was a completely different time and mindset, and America needed a very different First Lady. Mrs. Eisenhower provided the psychological stability our troops needed after WWII and the Korean Wars were over-again, a motherly stable figure during a time of incredible economic prosperity, expansion of the middle class, of suburbs, manufacturing jobs, and when Daddy went to work and Mama stayed home and took care of the kids and house and organized bridge parties for other stay-at-home mothers, and of course religious services on Sunday. By the 1960s, America wanted something new-youth, optimism, hope for the future and something a little more daring than the past, most of which were centered around an economic depression and wartime. The Kennedys fit that bill, and they came at a time when we needed them the most. Sadly, that sentiment hasn't lasted, which is why so many look back to this time idyllically, whether right or wrong. JFK did NOT buy the Sunburst pin. Jackie saw that in a shop in London and wanted it desperately because it dated to her favorite period of history-that of French King Louis XIV also known as the Sun King. JFK said no he was not going to buy it for her-so she took some of her real jewelry and had exact copies made in fake jewels, sold the real ones and bought her Sunburst pin. (The exact copies were made in secret, so as not to upset the giver, this was something commonly done by those in society in those days.) "She cleaned up well." Would he say that about a man? Honestly, that comment regarding Mrs. Johnson was uncalled for and very unprofessional. While the focus of the presentation was fashion, Mrs. Kennedy was so much more. Yes, she wore beautiful clothes and amassed a jewelry collection to rival the Crown Jewels. But first and foremost she was highly intelligent, and her work alone in history/historic preservation is what helped set this American citizen on her career, first fostered by family and then others, but Mrs. Kennedy's love for history and the preservation of our built historic sites helped further that passion. There is a reason why I have the Shikler pair of White House portraits of the Kennedys on my parlor wall-Mrs. Kennedy for her hard work in history and historic preservation, and her husband who served during a time of incredible optimism but also societal turmoil we are still grappling with today. We would be much better off today if we accepted one another as equals and focused on increasing our knowledge instead of tearing each other apart and glorifying ignorance, which is ruining our Republic.
@julietteyork6293
@julietteyork6293 Год назад
Fascinating comments. What’s your source for Jackie having copies made of her good jewelry? As for this presenter’s catty and unprofessional digs regarding less fashionable FLOTUS’, I was also appalled - not only by his classless comments but by his utter lack of historical and cultural context, which you accurately provided. Lastly, JFK wouldn’t recognize his party in its present Marxist state. As a former Dem myself who escaped the leftist plantation 8 years ago, I have no doubt JFK would be sickened to see what’s become of our once great country. And Jackie - who epitomized traditional values - would have been equally at odds with the degradation of our society and culture.

From stories I have read and I don't know if it's true, but there was no reason for the man to stray. Jacqueline enjoyed s*x just as much as her husband did. But she tolerated his s*x addiction, and from other books I've read, the father, Joe, was a rounder himself and spread it around all he could. I have also read Joan Kennedy's biography and she claims that Teddy cheated many times and with many different women. Stories are that the surviving three sons Jack, Robert and Ted all passed women around to each other.

They did not publicize the fact that it was a black women because they did not want a backlash.Jackie's mother wanted the flounces and designs that you see on the dress but Jackie wanted am more of a shoulette Needless to say a week before the wedding a flood occured in the basement of the womens home and the bridesmaids dresses were at a loss hence the black seamstress had to come out of pocket for the bridesmaids dresses although Jackie's dress was saved. Even Joh Kennedy after the wedding remarked to her that the design of her dress was a bit much. After that Jackie found her voice and relied on her own instincts of what would work well for her frame and style. Succeed? Yes she did succeed in being a very well-dressed women.

BookLover I said it was reported in one of the biographies I read on the Kennedys (and I've read dozens of them). It was NOT my statement; I was quoting what an author has written.

BookLover - I think she succeeded in a great deal more than just being a fashion icon! She was above all an excellent mother raising her children to be down to earth, patriotic, polite all under horrible circumstances and in the public glare. She succeeded in keeping her own counsel all under horrible circumstances and in the public glare. She succeeded in representing her country abroad. She succeeded in being an inspiration to many young women by showing that one could be classy, intelligent, well dressed, curious, witty, well read, sports oriented, but most of all poised in the best and worst of circumstances. As she was human I am sure of course that she had faults but what an asset she was to this country, and in my own life to always get up and keep going when the chips are down. Her ability to never defend her position or decisions thus remain a private person in an age where spilling your gut is the norm makes her all the more someone to admire.

Her mourning suit, in black, the only one she had, was made by Oleg Cassini---NOT Givenchy! This is the very same suit she wore to the John F. Kennedy Jr.christening, it had giant black tassels on the jacket. The tam hat that she wore during the funeral belonged to Lee Radziwill, and didn't have a veil attached. That dress that is claimed that Jackie didn't wear in the White House years, in fact was worn during the White House years!! It was aqua blue crepe, and she pinned her antique sunburst pin to the bow on the bodice---I think she wore it to Mexico or South America somewhere. Jackie also wore it to the dinnner for the America's Cup in Newport RI in 1962. Who is this guy? He is so wrong on lots of stuff. . .

She wore that blue dress and the diamond broach to the American showing of the Mona Lisa. And Newport.

Hillary does not have the fashion sense BUT SHE DEVELOPED HER LOOK SEVERAL TIMES ONCE UPPIN HER LOOK TO PLEASE HER HUSBAND-BECOMING A BLONDE AND IN HER CAMPAIGN SHE JUST LOOKED WELL DRESSED AND STANDARDLY SO WITH VERY NICE JEWELRY BUT SHE WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. Hillary is a work horse. Give her credit- she deserves a whole lot.

Too the pillbox hat was a cloth crown--regal (as its male counterpart forerunner the top hat) yet not overly so, to befit the jointress head of state of a democratic republic.

Jackie was JFK’s pride. Marrying her was the best decision he had ever made in his life. Jackie was very classic, sophisticated, intelligent and very beautiful for his taste. Even up to his grave, Jackie made it sure his funeral was at its best that nobody can ever forget in history. Real brave and courageous woman, that was Jackie.

Yet, he cheated on her openly, assuming, I would bet, that he was “entitled.” After all, he WAS Joe Kennedy’s son.

Well it seemed until the death of third son Patrick she was a symbol to JFK. As beautiful as she was he was not affectionate with her and she allowed his unfaithfulness due to status. That is what those women all did. I am talking about political women not going to name the past First Ladies but include Ethel Kennedy too. Dysfunctional.

Jacke Kennedy came from old money, multi generational, before she even met Jack. He came from new money, or one generational wealth. Jackie and her sister Lee were raised by a very wealthy father who always dressed very well. He taught his daughters about clothes and being well dressed.

Think about it; even in movies, costumes,and colors are chosen to relay a mood/feeling. In Jackie's time , tv was a new addition to political contests. I would guess that the Kennedy administration wanted to relay new, fresh,contemporary, and hopeful! I think her fashion choices did this beautifully,and the world noticed!!! People still notice today!

There was nothing particularly individual about the clothes Jackie wore, they were just a very expensive, high end, reflection of the typical sixties style, that every other young woman wore at the time!

Lady Bird Johnson ‘cleaned up’ well, was handsome & nice! The speaker doesn’t hold back - handsome meaning looking like a man. Pretty derogatory judging these women solely on their looks. The presentation was on Jackie O’s fashion - not slagging off other women who didn’t compare in fashion and/or looks.
