When my first daughter was young she got an ipod and I put a bunch of music on there, especially The Clash and The Jam. I didn't know if she would listen to those old songs, but it turns out she did. A lot. And as her two younger sisters got older she shared her music collection with them. All three now know a good number of Paul Weller's songs by heart, and one of my greatest joys is putting on some of my old music in the car and the three of them bursting into song. I hope they remember those moments as fondly as I do.

Ali: Yes. Back when music was used as a tool for highlighting social injustice from a genuinely furious angry young Weller in his (at least in my irrelevant opinion) finest incarnation, as lead singer of The Jam. Obviously no social media, ergo no attempts to ingratiate himself with anybody for "likes" no faux-posturing to gain fans: That fury was totally authentic; the way he spits the words out.; What an amazing thing to see - Music made organically with the intention of making a contribution toward facilitating positive change in society. Fat chance of that today in an industry where the 'artists' are cynically put together in a strict, tightly controlled, conveyor belt, formulaic manufactured fashion; by Cowell or Fuller. Sing utterly meaningless lyrics and can't speak, dress or shit without the permission of their svengali bosses. What a shame. Okay Ali, I do apologise - hope I've not lulled you into a coma with my scintillating (irony present) blathering. I shall piss of now. Take care. Love and peace to you and to all persons.💙👌.

That's about when I heard them, maybe 83? I think I heard Sound Effects first, not sure, it was on a mislabeled tape I found. I actually though they were TRB at first! DIdn't find out the truth till I finally took the tape to an independent little record shop near my house and played it for the owner. I left the tape with him and returned to find out is was a band called The Jam! He would get the records in and I'd buy them immediately. Some were imports and some he got legitimately, amd I paid dearly for every one, but I couldn't get enough of Paul, Bruce and Rick. Now with RU-vid and Amazon, the idea that you couldn't just go out and buy whaetver you wanted seems impossible.

For me this is three young Men aka The Jam at their zenith. The Setting Sons album was a game changer for Music, The band and for a lot of Folk like myself. The Eton Rifles put into words and melody how I felt about the matters of Class, Standing, Wealth and all that bollocks that alas does really matter. Wasteland, Little Boy Soldiers & Thick as Thieves - need I say anymore :)

As relevant today as it was then. The Jam meant so much to so many growing up in the UK, myself included. The irony was that for many their message was probably lost in the music as the quality was so high but regardless, some of the best storytellers ever.

Bit older than you the Jam weren't really my bag back then ,,,,BUT I loved the message in this song. You have probably put a better account of the song in your thread, not here lookin for a row there's one of them goin on down near Slough 😉 🤙

@@peterbalac1915 I am finding that as I get older I am much more receptive to music that I rejected in my youth. I will avoid Slough for now and I am clearly no match for your untamed wit.

My song of the day....from the album "setting sons"....Reviewed may 1980 by RS. They said it was their best album so far. The Jam never got played on Aussie tv or radio.....I think maybe because they sounded too pommy. Same with Rush (he had a weird voice) and the Smiths. I think paul Weller does sound pommy but we're going to give it a go on RetroCountdown. Day 6937. 931 weeks. Raw honey and apple and all of my urine til 3.00pm then dried and fresh figs and apple and onion and apple cider then more urine then fresh fruit and vegetables and other foods at 8.00pm. No change.
