The best monologue in film history.

The moment Quint tells Hooper the tattoo is if the Indianapolis watch how Hooper's demeanor instantly changes. Hooper is a shark expert, and he's heard the story before. He knows what Quint is going to say. Chief Brody, like the audience, is the only one unaware.

Richard Dreyfus said that when Robert Shaw started his monologue, everyone fell silent, totally entranced

Thank you!! Such a simple scene tells us so much about these men and changes their dynamic so much!

Robert Shaw (the actor who played Quint; he was also an award-winning writer) wrote the final version of this speech as he performed in the movie, which he synthesized from about 10 previous drafts from other writers whom Spielberg had asked.

He did a great job!

Sharks can see much better than humans in water (some say about 10 times). And while we're at it, bears' sense of smell is so acute they've been known to walk miles in a straight line towards food. :D

When Robert Shaw first did this scene he was drunk and the delivery wasn't very good but Speilberg figured it was the best he was going to get. The next day Shaw went to SS and said i want to do it again. He delivered this version(edited down as it was 15 minutes long originally) and we have movie history.... 😊

I met a guy who was on that ship. He had an amputated leg. Heck of a nice guy. He was the president of a historic USS Independance official group. I can't imagine.

Wow! It’s crazy to imagine the similarities between the monologue in the movie and real life 😮

Sharks actually CAN see very well. The size of their eyes is determined by how deep the water is that they are living in (deeper water usually means larger eyes). And also, many sharks can actually see ultraviolet light, something we humans are completely blind to.

The sad thing is the tail of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis is incorrect. From Quint's point of view it's accurate. BUT. In the 80's someone doing research on the sinking found recently declassified records that showed that 4 listening posts received the SOS. Two stations ignored it thinking it was a trick. One's operator was drunk. And the lasts officer had left standing orders not to be disturbed for any reason. The US Navy of course hid this from the public and the bulk of the US Navy.

Wow…talk about corruption. On the bright side, I love how a story becomes real once you tell it!

That was a nightmare. The Indianapolis was the Hiroshima bomb. Little Boy was delivered successfully. On the return the Indianapolis was sunk. This Memorial Day lets remember the men lost on that fateful day.
