George and Louise are mistaken for a butler and maid in this clip from The Jeffersons. You can grab The Jeffersons: The Complete Series (The Deee-luxe Edition) at www.shoutfacto...
“Movin’ On Up…”
Fans of The Jeffersons, rejoice! All 253 episodes of the classic sitcom developed by Norman Lear (All in the Family; Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman) have finally arrived on DVD in The Jeffersons: The Complete Series.
Originally airing from 1975 to 1985, The Jeffersons documented the side-splitting exploits of an upwardly-mobile family: dry cleaning entrepreneur George (Sherman Hemsley), his wife Louise (Emmy® winner Isabel Sanford), and their son Lionel, as they move from the working-class section of Queens to a luxury apartment in Manhattan. George’s brash, arrogant personality always seems to get him in hot water. Lucky for him, he's got the level-headed "Weezy" by his side and their wise-cracking maid Florence (Marla Gibbs) to keep him humble. Together, they overcome the comic challenges and culture clashes that their new way of life brings.
Featuring a terrific supporting cast (including Paul Benedict, Roxie Roker, and Franklin Cover), memorable guest appearances (Sammy Davis, Jr., Gladys Knight, Reggie Jackson, Billy Dee Williams and more) - and of course, one of the catchiest theme songs in television history - The Jeffersons: The Complete Series is another must-own sitcom classic from your friends at Shout! Factory.
Shout! Factory has devoted itself to the higher pursuit of pop culture for the past 10 years. During that time, we've released some of TV's most beloved gems, such as Freaks And Geeks, My So-Called Life, Sports Night, MadTV and Mystery Science Theater. We've also reintroduced some of television's most adored personalities with collections featuring Dick Cavett, Tom Snyder, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Mel Brooks, Groucho Marx and Elvira, Mistress of the Night.

@@connerhuston2613 Yes, they appeared on Fresh Prince as George and Louise. I believe it was TWO episodes. The first was during a couples group therapy session. They are married for 40 years by then and basically recreate the pillow fight scene they had with the Willis's to relieve their aggression on The Jefferson's only with Will and his girlfriend. Let me tell you, they didn't miss a beat. It was just like on the show. The other time was at the end of the series when Uncle Phil was selling the house and they were one of the prospective buyers. Sherman Helmsley DID appear on other episodes, but as a different character. He was Judge Robertson who was Uncle Phil's mentor but who turned against him and ran for office against Uncle Phil. He ends up dying of a stroke when Will tells him off for pulling dirty tricks and lies to win.

This is a view perpetuated by Hollyweird. This shit didn't happen in reality. America wasn't racist enough for the Hollyweird executives, so they had to make shit up. When "I Love Lucy", one of the biggest shows EVER was pitched, the execs thought Americans wouldn't accept a white American woman being married to a Cuban immigrant, so they rejected the show. In the second season, it was the highest rated show by far, especially the episode where Lucy goes into labor. America was fine with them. It was HOLLYWOOD who had a problem. THEY projected their own prejudices, both of intermarriage AND of their views of the average American, onto EVERYONE else. FUCK THEM! Hollyweird creates problems which largely don't exist and then pretends to solve them with actors.

I can’t imagine being a black man back at that time watchin the Jeffersons. This was the VERY first show depicting a black man and family that were successful. Good thing a white guy (Norman Lear) created it. It would’ve NEVER got off the ground had a brotha came up with this story line. What people missed though was George, aside from his clowning in the earlier seasons, was a confident black man who believed In himself. He wasn’t intimidated by anyone. He wanted to make it and was always tryin to improve his business and makin contacts.

These shows are such a great way to preserve the time and place in which they were created. The sad reality of the 1970s being nothing more than trying to challenge the situation and stereotypes of blacks defined a show like this and others like Good Times and many more and into the 80s with Benson and so on. And in the Jeffersons the idea of remaining a housewife despite grown kids while hiring someone to do the housework as a sign of "making it" foreshadowed changes yet to come.

What the show was all about was actually pretty simple. It was the story of a black family who were poor and lived in the ghetto where the husband, through a government minority small business loan and hard work made a success and became wealthy. But despite the money and his constant attempts to move into upper class society, he is still a high school dropout and ignorant and is never accepted other than in the business world. Another VERY important point is that George Jefferson is basically a black Archie Bunker. He loves his family but is incredibly racist and ignorant. This was actually groundbreaking for the time because it showed that unlike the propaganda the liberals were disseminating (and still DO) black people could be every bit as prejudice against whites as whites were against blacks.
