We have a trade! Jerami Grant has been traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Portland Trailblazers for a 1st round pick. This opens up cap space for the Pistons to go after DeAndre Ayton in free agency, while Portland helps Damian Lillard and keeps their top 10 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

From Portland’s perspective I think this is a great add. Detroit I really disagree with you though. I thought of Jerami as one of the higher value trade targets this year. Getting the Bucks 2025 first round pick, where like you said they could’ve gotten that at any point in the past or really anytime before this year’s trade deadline. For me this an L for Detroit
@nollypoli
@nollypoli Год назад
You thought Jerami was one of the higher value trade targets. NBA GMs thought differently. If this is the best Detroit could get, then its the best they could get. At the end of the day they signed Jerami as a free-agent, get to pass the buck of extending him to another team and got more assets at the same time while opening up a colossal amount of cap-space and flexibility. Its not just about the immediate return, but what might come next.
@itsallenwow
@itsallenwow Год назад
Yeah man we’re gonna just disagree on this. I’m just about positive they could’ve done better than: A pick in 2025, a pick that is 3 years away when Cade isn’t even on his rookie contract anymore. And that pick also comes from the team with Giannis. So it’s not like the pick is likely to be very high anyway.

Yes we could have gotten two firsts or better players, but I think a lot of Detroit fans are tired of the rebuilding. We have absolutely no one exciting to watch outside of Cade, and I think getting Cade a guy like Ayton, or even a Spartan in Miles Bridges would be huge for our fanbase. I don’t want another Stanley Johnson, Luke Kennard, Sekou, etc
@declanl6239
@declanl6239 Год назад
Agreed. This has New York KP vibes. It is a good deal if they can sign ayton. But if he isn’t willing to sign there it’s an L. Phoenix will most likely match and force a trade but it’s unlikely now with grant gone they have little to offer a contender. Would not be surprised if Phoenix matched to trade to someone else later on for some pieces that would help. Anything could happen for Detroit but they are at a start of a rebuild and there isn’t too many young up n coming players to overpay or take a flier on. If they were a few more years into their rebuild this would make sense but with the current construction and timeline of their team, getting essentially just a 20+ draft pick in a few years looks like it’s a solid L.

I had heard that Jerami Grant told other teams that he wouldn’t re-sign with them. He wanted to come to Portland to play with Damian Lillard. Weaver worked with Sam Presti who is a genius. We aren't winning anything this year, I'd actually rather we took the OKC approach when they took on CP3 or PG-13, Al Horford contracts and in return received multiple first round picks in their rebuild. Take on the money and get picks and then next year there will be FA then too. Give me Hayward or Westbook for draft picks and do the same thing next year. Cade would have a rough first 3 years, then we have a bunch of cap space, draft picks, AND these young guys get to play and see what they're made of or not.

Nice breakdown. As a Blazer fan with Grant in the fold I’d love to see us take Duren or Sochan with #7, unless we can trade 7 for 13 & 15 (Charlotte) and land Sochan & Dieng or Williams. The latter of those 2 options would be golden. Sochan & Williams with Grant instantly makes our defense elite. Sochan & Dieng gives us another elite perimeter defensive menace and maybe the highest upside guy in the draft. A 6’10 SF/PF in the mold of a Batum/Ingram mix. Nurk needs to be moved tho. A sign & trade if possible. Bring in Bamba & his 7’10 wingspan and see if coach Billups can unlock the defender in him.
@samn90834
@samn90834 Год назад
I get what you mean but your defense definitely won’t be elite still, as of rn I believe in Billups as a head coach but his pnr coverage was way too aggressive and got picked apart, and Dame and Anfernee as a backcourt is very bad defensively, they don’t become elite all of a sudden
@GunninRebel55
@GunninRebel55 Год назад
@@samn90834 In Billups first year his veterans weren’t even buying in defensively and had to be called out several times. He didn’t get compliance from his players until those vets were traded and Dame sat. Then he was able to begin implementing his scheme. Keyword: “begin.” Even then we didn’t have a roster capable of playing great defense. Saying his P&R defense was too aggressive and got picked apart (with those guys executing it) is like saying Cade Cunningham wasn’t quite at LeBron level last year. No coach comes in and transforms a defense with unwilling and undersized defenders overnight. We didn’t have one single elite or even great defender last year. Grant’s above average but still better than anyone we had last year. Sochan will be elite. Williams will be better and more mobile on that end than Nurk. Add Bamba & Williams rim protection, a big upgrade in our size & length, Sochan & Grant as big perimeter defending wings, & Billups defensive acumen and principles and you can’t say we straight up won’t be elite defensively. And I’m not saying it’ll be overnight but we will have the pieces, scheme, and players willing to buy in for it to progress into a formidable defense. And name me one lineup we put out there last year that should’ve been a good defense especially while losing games on purpose.
@GunninRebel55
@GunninRebel55 Год назад
@@samn90834 Just for an example of what a massive upgrade in defensive talent can do: how much do you think Billups defense would’ve been too aggressive and picked apart with Kawhi & Gobert or even Herb Jones & Jaren Jackson JR executing his scheme?? The players matter bro.
@samn90834
@samn90834 Год назад
@@GunninRebel55 yea Sochan is a fucking monster defensively, Hope the blazers can pick him up, Udoka is a first year coach that immediately transformed the Celtics into the best defense in the league, but he was able to do that with only having Pritchard getting 10-15 mins a night, no other small guards that can be targeted, I just don’t think it’s possible to make a truly elite defense if your two best offensive players are defensive liabilities, even if Billups can make them buy in (which I’m sure he can) it’s lack physical tools that will hold them back. I see no reason why they can’t be a really good team and it wouldn’t surprise me if they ended up with a top 10 defense (especially if they replace Nurk) but can’t see them breaching the top 3-5 and becoming truly elite

I think pistons will end up taking the hornet's "absorb hayward + 15" offer and manage to get ayton. if they can do both, and have hayward play 60 games (big if, considering his history), then the pistons trade bumps up to an A imo. getting 2 first round picks, hayward, and being to still take on ayton, and all that for letting jerami go, is a huge win.

Interesting... I get that they would like to get Ayton, but why not opt for the sign and trade route? Unless their insider info is telling them that the Suns will simply let Ayton walk in free agency by not matching whatever he signs elsewhere. As of right now though I don't think that is likely. The Pistons are a rebuilding team with very little win-now talent, why would a max guy want to play there? Living in Detroit AND likely not making the playoffs? Is the money alone enough to convince Lavine or Beal to sign a max with them? Why would the Pistons even want that? Perhaps they want to chase after and over-pay Miles Bridges, Victor Oladipo, or Anfernee Simons. Or maybe they just want to pay a little more than most teams would to lower level young-ish guys who still have upside like Nic Claxton, Gary Payton, Jalen Smith, Isaiah Hartenstein, Tyus Jones, Mitchell Robinson, Mo Bamba, Lonnie Walker, or Donte DiVincenzo. The Pistons do love handing out oddly high contracts to role guys.

I think most nba fans understand the Pistons are creating cap space but who the hell wants to go to Detroit? Only player I can think of is Sexton for the max. Ayton has like a 98% chance of getting matched and even if they can’t trade him this off season they can hold him through out the regular season and trade him. And then Bridges has said he’s willing to stay with the Hornets for less money and the hornets are apparently try to shed money so they can pay Bridges more.

@t4d0W Год назад
If Beal is chasing money, it makes more sense he milks his contract for all its worth. In order to do that he has to sign with Washington who has his bird rights and can give him a 5 year max. Pistons can only offer 4 years at best. That doesn't mean Beal isn't in play for a trade at some point down the road since he'll just take his max money (which he'll be 29 or 30 when he does) and then force his way out a year or two later with GM/ownership intending to do good on him for his loyalty.

@t4d0W
@t4d0W Год назад
Detroit never been a huge FA destination even with UFAs like Lavine and Beal who are available. Also their own respective team has the advantage since they own their bird rights so they can slap another year for a max term in comparison to another team. A key play the Pistons can make is going after certain RFAs to fill up roster depth/talent knowing their old teams aren't going to match the contract. Basically the Pistons have to sign a sum of talent better than Grant's value which he helped freed up money for the Pistons' cap space.

if they offer 4/140 to ayton. even if the suns match, detroit is pretty much the only ones who will actually pay him that. or willing to tbh. ifdetroit says "na we don't wanna give you anything" suns are in a real tough spot
@t4d0W
@t4d0W Год назад
The hope with that gambit is the Suns don't match (because Sarver is a cheapskate). If the Suns match they can still turn Ayton's contract into 1~3 players and a collection of assets. Pistons keep their money and still don't have a player that replaces the outgoing Grant. Which is why productive players still carry value to flip them to ideally another player than turning them to 'whats in the mystery box of a draft pick' along with cash considerations. Unless there are no desirable players to be flipped in which case Weaver has to make do with the lemons he got.
