In this video I cover the bed, Z dovetail and some of the chip control features. I actually give a bit of a project overview as well, just to clarify things a bit. Better late than never, right? All of the machining footage is going to be in the part 2 of this video. That way you get to watch what you want :P. As usual, the plans for this project can be found on my Patreon.

Certainly! 1) Oxtoolco, 2) abom79, 3) nyccnc, 4) Stefan Gotteswinter, 5) AvE, 6) Keith Fenner, 7) clickspring. Unfortunately most of my impressions sound better in my head :P

Always stoked to see new video on your channel. Definitely cool to see the progress on this project, it looks like it's gonna be an interesting little beastie to turn on. I'm looking forward to seeing the arrangement you've come up with for all the axes, it sounds unorthodox.

If you can't make something accurate make it adjustable. Wise words to live by!

Indeed! I try to put it into practice in all my projects, after hearing you say it awhile back. My other favorite is, "If you have 10 seconds in which to act, think for 8 and act for 2." Planning is always the most important part of an successful project.

Hey, maybe you should replace the shaft with an ER32 or ER40 straight shank tool holder. Check it out on www.maritool.com.

That's actually what I did for my CNC lathe... can't beat the price for a precision ground shaft!

Beautifully made..can I ask why the bed is so short.. by the time you have all your cross slides and tail stocks it looks like you will have very little space for stock in your choice of work holding.
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
I'm looking for about 4" of travel.. I'm thinking that with smaller diameter stuff I won't want to stick it out that far anyways, and with larger diameter stuff it will probably be for fairly short work. I'm also planning for a tailstock

Looks like a pretty good place for a tracer attachment... Patterns can be tricky if the follower doesn't approximate the radius of the tool, though.

I just binge watched the oxtools wilton baby bullet build. He had a really cool tracer idea with a dial. check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I_ZOYCMWbY0.html

hello, why you didn't use a profilled rails like hiwin instead dovetail bed?
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
+Евгений Ивахник i just needed something that could be locked in place. I’m sure you can get profiled rails with a locking mechanism but i imagine theyd be more expensive. Im happy to do the machining too!

It sounds like you are describing a second operation lathe with all the feeds lever operated. My factory in China still uses the machines. Incredibly useful and flexible machines. Collet closer work holding. In Chinese these are called 仪表车床。instrument lathe.

Is that a cim motor? I have one on the watchmakers lathe and it's quiet

Great intros! Can you elaborate on your clear path comment, I'm also looking at clear path for making a 5x10 plasma table. Cant wait to see your 3d printer too!
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
I'm hoping to put a video out soon, but basically clearpaths have a more optimal velocity profile -- namely they can accelerate quickly to a high speed. For a 3D printer, which would have much shorter travel than a plasma cutter, I'm hoping to make use of the brisk acceleration to minimise the time taken for short moves. In your application, the main advantange would be the speed. For both of our applications, they're nice and quiet and easy to work with!

Was thinking about using a CIM motor for a similar project, what power supply did you settle on?
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
Just a cheapie 12V 30A regulated supply, though i think a larger, unregulated supply would be the way to go

You can get the broken tap out of the aluminium chemically. A warm saturated solution of alum works good to dissolve the tap, but leaves the aluminium intact.
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
+Wes Marquenie i’ve heard of this before and i’ve always wanted to try it. Perhaps i will this time!
@WesMarquenie
@WesMarquenie 6 лет назад
It's very easy, it just takes a few hours. Submerse the entire aluminium part because it can get a bit discolored/dull. I dont even try to remove a broken tap/drill from aluminium mechanically. This is so much easier and less risky. Electrolysis also works to remove steel from aluminium. But I always use (potassium) alum. You can make it from KOH, Sulfuric acid and aluminium, but alum is also cheap and easy to buy.

As to the buying existing machines, I have a Sherline, and I'm not too impressed. Needs more rigidity, more power, and less run-out. This looks beefy, and your power calculation showed why the Sherline is a bit wimpy with its 90w motor. Now just get the run-out to .0002" to match some UP collets...

Nothing pisses me off more than semi literate US spelling. Learner to spell in the language you claim to speak...English. It's spelt, "Jeweller's".

SauronsEye, "learner to spell..." Really? The pot calling the kettle black? Try proof reading your comments if you want to act so high and mighty.
@rstelly14
@rstelly14 6 лет назад
Boy, you look stupid. In that high and mighty rant of yours, did it ever occur to you that "jewelers" is a real and accepted form of the word. The only difference is in which country you learned to spell it. American English = Jeweler British English = Jeweller
