Oh, man!! More videos like this please!!! I understand it takes a lot more time and energy, but man is it worth it!! I know I should be practicing to play more, but this is what I do when I am not learning another song or playing ones I already learned so I don't lose them. I have been working on guitar picks lately, and found out some very interesting bits of information, things I haven't been able to find anywhere else, especially on the internet, and I have found answers I had also, with the same issue. Nice work BTW!!

I love the way you dial in your sound , especially EQ....it's very unique. Do you remember Dave , years ago when people didn't believe you had all your MG EQ setting set to zero.....and people couldn't workout how your sound wasn't muddy 😁❤

Hey Dave. Great content as usual. Couldn't help but to notice you get a great clean dirtishy sound of the Marshall JH, but when I try on mine, I just can't get the sound this bright 14:50... I guess my amp sucks.

JH with your settings (as shown in many other of your videos) is still the best option for me for DC

Another fantastic insightful vid Dave... I have a DS2 but recently got the DS1 and have been dicken around with pedal placement and i have found my holy grail of tone. You have try it! GUITAR - Marshall BB2 (Clean boost mode, volume at 9 oclock) - DS1 (Tone at 9 oclock, level full, distortion full) - Clean channel on amp.... sounds great either through my Peavey Bandit and MG100HDFX... give it a go Dave!!! stick some reverb / delay on after the DS1 and BB2 and sounds sweet

Learned so much from listening to your musings on tone , solid state amps and playing style. You should commission someone to create your own line of pedals. Start with the Mr. Flibble OD… and expand from there - would be a great kickstarter. Thanks to your teachings I have what I consider a usable tone (to my ear) at bedroom levels and stopped chasing the tone monster so I can practice more and spend less time “twiddling knobs” . Keep the faith my brother and let your light shine.

Golden Plexi is unbelievable! I have the two channel Golden Plexi and it has kept my Boss OD pedal in its box for years!

Brilliant stuff as always, all three are great, the DS2 was a great surprise on those settings (and a delightful sort of filth when stacked with the cranked DS2) but to my ears the clear winner is the Jackhammer, sth about it, clearer, crispier, sth. Btw chuffed about the upcoming Glove review/shootout, own one and adore it, initially bought as a cheaper OCD alternative for my main distortion sound (as you use your Gvnor), but its so much more than that, and i've come to love it more as a low to mid gain always on when I dont need super clean. Super excited to see if it pairs with the Ibanez wah and the crancked DS2 for the John lead stuff since those two are my most probable next buys 😂😅😅

That is indeed a solid tone. And to get it of my chest, I'll rather be addressed as "people of the tube", than a Troglydite or whatever it is, any day for the week :) Keep it real Dave, as you always do. Btw. I am quite curious of your recording setup for you you tube vids. You might have done it before, but if you don't mind. What is the signal path, it always sound great!

Ive never tried to be 100% accurate to JF tone but more so inspired by. I have run the ds1 as my dirty clean into ds2 overdrive for a long time with lots of joy

I liked the Golden Plexi too. I don’t exactly know what John F sounds like so I don’t know how close they were to his sound. I didn’t care for the jackhammer so the Boss pedal is #2. I really like gear reviews. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵

Dave, I think there are some kits that are close to a ShredMaster, there are also some for Plexi and JCM like tones. You can mix and match upon what clipping snd which tonestack you prefer, just need something like a parametric mid control instead of a single knob to add that JH-1 versatility. Need one of them testboards to try out with before soldering though. Takes some time to solder and add graphics on the box, but it is worth it if you want to tailor your own drive, plus you can make a few copies afterwards as spares and even to sell.

The Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret with gain at 0 has the perfect Frusciante Dirty Clean Sound. It is a rad pedal tbh. It responds like a real amp to wah, fuzz & DS2, It is the perfect pedal platform, plexi esque or even fender tones, the EQ on that thing is amazing. I wish Dave would have to opportunity to demo 1. I have the MK 2. I am going to grab an mk1 to use as another gain stage.

Great sound, even for the non-JF obsessed.

have you ever tried those old (and now new again) black marshall pedals? guvnor, bluesbreaker, shredmaster, etc... I wonder if any of those would cover the jackhammer spot for you... cheers mate!

hey brother i found 13 golden plexis on ebay....so all is not lost! average prices around 65ish USD...not sure how many quid that would be... hope that helps you grab a few more as spares....the GP is the simplest yet sounds sweet too! i still have my sweet cream pedal brotha!

Have you tried the Carl Martin plexitone? Side by side i personally found it better than the tone city pedal. Just thought I’d give it a mention

Hi Dave 👏 unrelated comment sorry. Just bought a 2004 Fender Deluxe Cyclone and had it delivered today. Where can you recommend to get it properly set up? It's not been played for years and needs some tlc. New strings, intonation, checking if neck needs any adjustment, fret buzz etc. also needs the selector switch fixing. I'm in Skegness but come to Louth and Holton Le Clay every other weekend so can come Grimsby way if needed 👍

Sweet tone with the DS-2, I wonder how it takes Fuzz in front. When I tried on my GT1000 Core it tends to lean itself more towards metal even at low gain, a TS leans more towards what I feel comfortable with after a ToneBender or Muff, using Fuzz as the main clipper, the OD after is to tighten up and not getting all the low end into the preamp. If anyone wonders, my homebuild ToneBender Mk1 has a lot of lowend, but I love it since even when it gets reduced by an 808 after, it still adds more punch, just like a Muff but with more attack than sustain.

I'm sorry, but a friend and I had over of these at separate tints and put opinion on it was such that it became known as the TURDo Distortion. Your milage may vary, but for me it's a hideous sounding thing 🤣 *Edit* The other pedal that got an unfortunate nickname.... The Cackhammer. I'm sorry Dave, you've just showcased two of my least favourite pedals. You did manage to make them sound better than I ever did though bro, so kudos to you for that ❤

I was hearing J.Fr signature in the DS2 here w/ & w/out ibanez wah , i thought the golden plexi sounded a bit lionhairish , the jackhammer tone was great but thought it lacked signature & flavour..

Golden plexi is certanly in between both of the others. Best of both worlds, DS2 and JackHammer

Doesn’t do bad by any means but I’d say it almost gets into an Andy Gill territory, not exactly like it but with a little more treble and maybe the volume rolled back on the guitar it could be cool, I might have to try it out
