When I was 13, I read the Duke was in Boston getting treated for cancer. I decided to run away to Boston to somehow help the Duke to get better. The train station was 5 miles from my house and I loaded a gym bag with vitamins and candy and walked all the way up town to take the train into Boston, about 23 miles. My father caught me at the train station. I told him where I was going and he said, "You can't help him more than the doctors can." After a minute, he said "C'mon, your mother's got dinner on." I remember climbing in the pickup and looking down the tracks. I thought I was going to get a licking but my dad never said anything and we just went home. I've often wondered how it would've turned out if I'd made it to the hospital and got to meet Duke, and maybe helped him in some way. I've lived my life by a lot of his ethos found in many characters he played and many of those were the same. Treat others as you would be treated, don't let others mistake your kindness for weakness and help those who are in need. God bless you Duke.

Very nice story! I've been a John Wayne-fan since the age of 6 (am 57 now). And I am German. I still remember the first time, I saw a John Wayne film. It was "She wore a yellow ribbon".

A friend of mine worked for a movie producer here in north Louisiana, who was a great friend of the Duke. In the early 70s Duke used to secretly fly into Shreveport and spend the weekend with this guy. Duke liked his cook's biscuits. He was a great American.

I'm 64 coming and have been a fan from a young lad, I still am to this day. I had a belt buckle made in 1979 with the word. DUKE on it and I still wear it to this day. It's a one off. He told things as they were, but he was also very humble, Hollywood as never or will never see his like again. If I hadn't got a fear of flying I would love to go to his museum. Ok it's not very John Wayne having a fear but I'm sure he would understand.a giant of a man.

When I think about it, I still miss John Wayne. I'm 80 now, and my dear, blessed United States of America has lost so much. The purity of our values is sullied. Much of our youth doesn't bother to disrespect their elders; they look right through us. We do, however, speak kindly to one another in acknowledgement. The aforementioned disrespect is only a tiny part of our society's sickness. We need an army of John Waynes.

My wifes entire family and most of the original residents in the town i now live in worked with him, or treated him to dinners when he had the set built and filmed 'The Alamo' here in Brackettville. I wish they would reopen Alamo Village again, I'm sure it would be a tourist destination if it was. Rest in Heaven John. There will never be another gentleman and cowboy like you.

John Wayne was the epitome of masculinity and manhood. Unfortunately, many men in America have lost sight of him and his vision. Because, let's face it, without men aspiring to have the same character traits as Marion Morrison, America is finished.

There's a world of difference between the widely accepted experience of the old west (the John Wayne version), and the experience of the vast majority of the country, whether then or now. Yet, conservatives (dinosaurs, really) speak of wanting a return to an experience that actually never was, even for those that lived through those times. They've traded their country for a red hat and given their mindless allegiance to a single man, a grifter, a con man the likes of which we have never previously endured, who urges his cult to violence and the overthrow of a legitimately elected successor. While his actions do not rise to the legal definition of treason, he is without question treasonous and a traitor to the principles upon which we were founded and operated under just fine prior to his soiling the White House with his presence.
