Steve Miller, in 1956 Steve was 12 and had a band. One of the members was Boz Scaggs. Wrote the song 'Gangster of Love' when he was 11. Les Paul of Les Paul Gibson fame was his godfather. Steve Miller, absolute legend.

The genius here isn’t the playing, or the the lyrics, or the vocal performance... the genius here is the GROOVE.

His parents were friends with Les Paul, who taught him guitar when he was very young.

The whole Steve Miller Greatest Hits Album is road trip material.

This tune was a huge hit. The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1974 and 16 years later topped the charts in England. Yes 16 years later! More than 16 years later, in September 1990, it reached number one in the UK Singles Chart for two weeks[2] after being used in "Great Deal", a Hugh Johnson-directed television advertisement for Levi's, thus holding the record for the longest gap between transatlantic chart-toppers

There are literally too many epic Steve Miller Band songs to list. Jet Airliner, Rock'n Me, Jungle Love, Serenade, Fly Like an Eagle, Take the Money and Run, Swingtown, and it goes on.

"Fly Like An Eagle" was SMB's biggest hit around here. "Rock N Me" and "Jet Airliner" are also great. "Take the Money and Run" was always my favorite. "Take the Money and Run" is a story about a bank robbing couple, ala Bonnie and Clyde.

Steve Miller was a hit making machine in the 70s. Their greatest hits album is amazing in that so many of the songs on it were in regular rotation on Classic Rock radio stations for decades.

This is a good song by Steve Miller Band, but you absolutely MUST react to their most iconic song "Fly Like an Eagle". It's amazing!

I can tell you that in the 70’s indoor roller skating was very popular. And Steve Miller was one of the most popular bands playing. We’d go every weekend, meet up with friends, and skate to fantastic 70’s music. Good times.

I had the honor of seeing Steve Miller when he and Peter Frampton were touring together in 2017 (at the Shoreline Amphitheater) to celebrate their 50 years of friendship. This song was one of the encore songs and I stuck around to hear this (I had to leave because I had to work early the next morning but was willing to sacrifice the sleep for this live). It is classic Steve Miller on that he references a couple of his previous songs (Space Cowboy, Gangster of Love).

The epitome of good time 70's chill.

I saw him play with his band on a very hot summer day going into dusk. It was at a county fair. Then about 4 songs into the concert an Iowa tornado blew through the state. the concert had to be stopped. We all crowded into a city works building and sheltered for 20 minutes. The wind and rain had blow so hard we were all worried that the tornado would rip the roof off. We were lucky the tornado missed the park where the show was at, but not by much. When we all came out, most of us thought the show was over. Hell no said Steve. Give us 45 minutes to set the stage and we will play for you all. 1 hour later as the sun was just fading out the band took the stage. There was about 3000 fans and soon to be life long fans cheering. The band played for about 2 hours total. They did 2 versions of the joker. One before the storm and an acoustic version with just Steve playing for the first minute of the song. Had been a fan of the space cowboy long before that show. I will never stop thinking they're one of the most thankful artists for their fans you'll ever see and hear. Stay safe my brothers from another mother

The Steve Miller Band, Greatest Hits 70s, is the greatest compilation of music that I've ever heard.

A huge Number One hit for the Steve Miller Band back in January, 1974. It was the 70's, everyone smoked grass. This is why the music was so good. Everyone was letting their inhibitions down and just doing it. I am so lucky that I was born when I was! The music was so good back then. There's nothing like this now.

Jungle Love is another fun song. We used to listen to Fly Like an Eagle with the intro on 4 foot speakers that literally shook the house! What a great time to be young.

Just thought of this one-- 'Never Been Any Reason' by Head East, it's sort of in the same vein as this song and is a pretty cool rocking out tune.

My buddy said the "really like your peaches want to shake your trees" line on a woman in a night club. The epic slap he received was probably the best part of that night.

Saw Steve Miller @ Penn State in 1973-74. The students were getting rowdy & the security was getting pissed off. Steve stopped the concert in the middle of a song, said to the students back off, the security is just doing their job and you guys in security just calm down, their just kids. He called for a roadie to bring him his acoustic, sent the band off stage, sat on a stool proceeding to do about 4 solo acoustic songs. Everyone chilled down, he brought the band back and launched into (I believe, hey I'm 67 so the memory isn't what it used to be) " Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma" playing the rest of his set. By the way I saw Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon tour) the night before in Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ, drove through to Altoona for this show the next night. God it was a great time for rock, jazz fusion, southern rock.

Gawd....I was your age sitting in Sedalia, MO at the 3 day Ozark Music Festival in July of 1974 listening to Steve do this song. 200K + were up on their their bare feet in 105' blazing heat, rocking out to Steve Miller & many more. You can literally close your eyes and point at any tune on any Steve Miller Band song list and it is guaranteed to be incredible. My personal favourite is True Fine Love.

There are songs that we all listen to that have the power to trigger a distant memory. "The Joker" is one of those songs. It was late 1973 and I was still in elementary school in Santa Ana, California. It was a different and much simpler time. I was walking on my schools playground on a weekend, as I lived right next to the school, and I saw my buddies big brother in the distance with a group of friends. As I walked towards them I noticed three things. The first was the group were all teenagers and sitting in a circle listening to one of them strum the guitar, which in those days was a fairly common occurrence, Second, there was a pungent smell of a weird cigarette that the kids were all smoking. Third, as I got closer I noticed they had a transistor radio and the song that was playing was "The Joker". My buddies friend yelled at me to go away before I got too close, which I did. As I walked back home I recalled the events of that day, still to young to comprehend, I wondered why I had been chased away by an otherwise friendly guy I knew. As I matured I understood and often I chuckled as I recall the perfection of what I witnessed. I now associate this song to the much more carefree days of my youth and it holds a special place in my library and heart. Fun reaction, Steve Millers greatest Hits, was one of my first purchases when I could afford my own music.

Steve Miller for years was a pure Blues artist, guitarist and vocalist, then out of blue (pun intended) Miller ups and decides to go rock.

My sister And I went to Steve Miller in 1990. It was one of the better shows we ever went to!!!

In case you didn't know, Space Cowboy & Gangster Of Love are references to earlier songs by Steve. Both are great songs in their own right. But Steve hit his peak with the late 70s albums Fly Like An Eagle and Book Of Dreams. I'll bet the majority of your SMB requests will come from that album. If you are looking to create a "road trip" mix tape, maybe your next Doobie Brothers song should be Rockin' Down The Highway.

Imagine a 70s parking lot full of partying friends in muscle cars singing this tune together with a trunk full of beer and ice and only one cop in town who everyone knew well. The movie Dazed and Confused is a must see to understand the time frame of all this music you guys listen to. You will absolutely love it (Matthew McConehey, Ben Affleck and others first movie) Other songs by Steve Miller, Fly Like an Eagle is #1, Jet Airliner, Jungle Love, Take the money and run...I think you need a timeline to be able to understand how music progressed. A song that sounds typical now is only because it was a fresh sound then and influenced so many. Not knowing the evolution and growth in order just makes songs lose context. When you had never heard anything hard like Black Sabbath/Zeppelin etc. It was almost shocking to hear in early 70s. That comes across completely different after 5,000 bands copied the sound for 50 years. It's not fair to judge the raw originators based on refined sounds they inspired to begin with. The year of a song is critical to understand it's place. From the Beatles buble gum pop of innocence (when growing hair over your upper ears was scandalous) to a few years later in the acid days of the late sixties of free love naked long haired hippies is a huge huge leap in just half a decade. The rapid development from Elvis in the late 50s until distortion starting to be used in the late 60s like Hendrix, led to the hard rock of the early 70s. By the late 70s it had become big money arena rock like Boston and Journey and you had the punk scene. By the early 80s, popular rock turned into progressive rock using a lot of keyboards and electronics like Rush, The Cars, Talking Heads, etc. and by the late 80s hair band metal was in arenas. Then in the early 90s, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" killed hair bands all by itself and brought on Grunge like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Anyway, you should make yourselves a timeline. Even if it's just on a poster board. It will truly help you put the sounds in place based on innovation, available technology and originality. I remember how we used to get excited about a song just because of the amazing new sound a keyboard would make in just one song (think of this when you hear Fly Like An Eagle especially). Now all of that just sounds typical and generic when at the time was jaw dropping cool. This early rock music is all about context and zeitgeist and the growth of mass media in it's infancy.
