It does suck, though. It's a political showcase from a writer who doesn't seem to know the current state of American politics lmao. It seems that one can't point out the problems with contemporary classism without making it "fair" and villifying the poor. There's a difference between fair and objective and it seems that Phillips and Co don't seem to get that.

It doesn't matter how much the filmmaker breaks out the celluloid and 1:85 to make it look like a TV Movie-of-the-week, it only ended up making it look sophisticated-but-stupid, or "a Nolan film" in terms of quality. The film is inherently political; it outright dares the viewer to look at it though other lenses, but it if the writers have no idea what the political situation they're trying to convey is actually like, what can I do? Call it a masterpiece like every teenage boy and 40-year-old dad of three? Lol

adam quane so what part of American politics are they seemingly failing to acknowledge? It doesn’t seem like they’re vilifying the poor. They are sympathizing the most extreme psychotic members of the poor. The extremists. Why is it that you aren’t okay with them wanting people to view something political through a different lens? That’s the only way you could ever attempt to understand somebody else anyways. I’m not saying through this movie, but I am saying that it’s important to be able to empathize or sympathize with someone and their situation, regardless of how your opinions differ from theirs. That’s a good skill that I’m sure you’re needing, as anyone that disagrees with you is a teenage boy or an older dad. There’s no way that someone “educated” and in their “prime” could ever disagree with you, I’m sure, as your takes are obviously always right😌 I’m sure🤡 The whole movie is just to be able to show how if someone is put into bad enough of a situation, with much of the Jokers situation being bad because of his lack of wealth. Almost every stressor he had, except for his mental illness, are all things that poor people inevitably have to end up dealing with, even the abuse is much more common among poor people. I just don’t think that you’ve actually walked a mile in a legitimately poor persons shoes before, yet you are outraged because the movie wasn’t going to be pc like you wanted it to be. I can almost guarantee you the people that hated this movie, thought it vilified poor people, or glorified gun violence, are not people that were ever poor or owned a gun in their life before. I have not seen or heard of any of the people that apparently are being marginalized by the movie actually being upset, while people outside of those groups are mad for them? That’s kind of wild. I think that maybe you’re missing something about today’s politics. I thought that the movie was a great counterpart to the vast majority of media today. There needed to be something that felt real, something that could actually happen to someone in such a shitty environment whenever you introduce a mental illness and abuse. Instead of sugarcoating everything they showed something dark and exaggerated. I liked it. You do you though

Class is rarely focussed on in American films - especially American superhero films (how I are going to have that metropolitan standoff without the metropolis? Etc) and my biggest criticism of Joker is that Phillips starts talking about the class system within the diegesis and how it affects the characters; how it troubles them, but goes on to villify the characters for having a problem with that trouble. Yeah, it's good that it actually mentions class by name, but this is not a poor person's version of class, it's not realistic or believable for someone of my current position (a person who's been poor forever) as it follows the regular rhetoric of the Centrist American media representative: "these people, if we acknowledge them at all, are poor, struggling and this should be dealt with... Oh, time has gone by, let's ignore their plights and make a heavy-brained analogy for the lack of acceptance that led to Donald Trump's rise to power and call them all worthless losers, shall we?" The film is written with two things in mind: if he endangers poor people of colour, he's a Trump voter, if he doesn't (because we left it ambiguous) he's a hardcore left-wing Marxist who wants the system burned. Oh, and he's also apolitical, he says so himself. Oh and all the mental illness diagnoses we included in the beginning? Yeah, we are going to overcomplicate and dramatacize this to the point of making it as though Arthur never had a mental illness in the first place. Arthur doesn't "change" throughout the film, not really; He gets more violent and physically dons makeup, that's about it. So the film's classism can be boiled down to it being the lifestyle of potential murderers and not something that's created and maintained by a corrupt system. I believe that the film uses the talking points of both the left and right to create its world, but they aren't interested in the subjects themselves, just the perverted effects of them.

I disliked because I knew it was going to be Tim doing his pseudo-satire shtick, which has become a little one-note to me, and he's been outed a couple of times of genuinely not liking the things he's parodying and just using parody as a way to say he doesn't like things in a verbose way without his opinion being critiqued in turn. I used to think it was funny, then I genuinely wanted him to become a better journalist. Now I don't think he's funny, _and_ he's using comedy as a crutch to prevent himself from having to become a better journalist. Tim Rogers videos are just always a lose-lose for me, because it's so hell-bent on the inside joke of creating nitpicks for the sake of humor that it's kind of become a poor man's Zero Punctuation at this point, and Zero Punctuation has already become a poor man's Zero Punctuation.

@@revolveroshawott3582 Nothing against you, but Tim himself has said he never wants to be considered a journalist. He wants to be considered a game developer first, and maybe a writer next or something. So, while you make good points (especially about the inside jokes, though I still love them personally), I think that viewing his videos as objective journalism is a mistake in the first place. He was hired primarily for his entertaining writing style (and his experience with Japanese culture), not necessarily to inform, so it makes sense to me that he wouldn't become a "better journalist" when being a journalist was never his objective in the first place. I would recommend checking out some of his earlier works not related to video games in order to get an idea about how his writing style has been unique and adaptable from the get go. He posted a piece about five years ago on his personal rules for writing on his site, but I just checked and it was taken down recently. You can still check it out on the internet archive though.

I'm glad he doesn't consider himself a writer though, because while he's I'm sure a decent guy, there are better creative writers who don't even have careers doing what he does, and all this really does always come off as pretentious more than parody. That's some people's style, I'm sure, but I can't take comedy as seriously as he does. Also, it doesn't help that his style is tailor-made to be clickbait. People are talking about people who dislike before they even watch the video, but there's a strong case to be made that is exactly what Kotaku and Tim want from videos like this. People liking Tim's shtick will likely watch the video and get out. But the greater the like-dislike disparity, the more likely people will be drawn back to duke it out in the comments. Dislikes are still engagement, negative feedback benefits them as much as positive, so long as there's a positive buffer. Too many people share my opinion, there's no engagement. Too many people share your opinion, no engagement. But viewers reach an impasse? Boom - Kotaku reels in the views. I enjoy Kotaku, but I can't pretend they're above clickbait, and I can't pretend Tim's content isn't mostly still entertained by Kotaku because it makes for sufficient clickbait.
