A review of The Jubilee Bible (ISBN 9781622451821), a recent English translation of Casiodoro de Reina’s 1569 Spanish Bible. The Jubilee Bible reads much like the King James Version, retaining the archaic pronouns thou, thee, thy, and ye. It is printed in a two-column, verse-by-verse format. The paper is heavy, show-through is mild, line spacing is generous, and the 9 point font is crisp and dark (but not bold). This edition includes a few translation notes but no references or maps. A Bible Dictionary, and a Concordance of Important Words, are placed after the Bible text.
The Jubilee Bible was translated by Russell M. Stendal. In this review, we describe the Jubilee Bible in detail and compare the translation to the KJV in several passages.

I have to say, you did an excellent job on this video. I like how your voice is easily heard and easy to understand without being loud. I got this version a little while ago and I really love the thickness and smoothness of the paper and most of all for reading the coloring of the paper, it is not white at all and is more of a yellow beige of which I have found wonderful for reading. This is the first text only verse by verse bible I have had and have found it very easy to read and useful if I do want to compare a verse and also for remembering a passage. I have found it to have clarity that the KVJ does not. It has now become my reader book. Unfortunately it is no longer going to be in print😞

I heard the jubilee bible was based on textus receptus but it uses 1 english word for 1 greek word which is probably not a good idea since 1 greek word probably has multiple meanings depending on context. Using the spanish translation as a starting point is probably a disadvantage of this translation.

Another concern is that this is a one-man translation. I don't think anyone should use it as their primary Bible, or use it to validate any doctrines. But it may still have some historical, devotional, or linguistic value

I just got a copy of the Jubilee Bible. A curious translation is at 1 Samuel 29:2 - "And as the cardinals of the Philistines reviewed their companies of hundreds and of thousands, David and his men were in the rear with Achish." What do you make of the choice of "cardinals" to translate a Hebrew word usually translated as "lords" or "princes" or "captains". I can only imagine it is a reference to the Roman Catholic sense of "cardinals" as Princes of the Church. In any case, what an odd word to choose. Any ideas??? Otherwise, I am liking this version!!

Thanks for mentioning that Reina was Lutheran. Most Reina (usually Reina-Valera) Bibles do not admit that, or even call him Socinian, in their Calvinist or Arminian bias imposed upon Reina's original text.

Part 2: I think this clarifies the use of “cardinal”: from Latin cardinālis (“pertaining to a hinge, hence applied to that on which something turns or depends, important, principal, chief”), from cardō (“hinge”) + -ālis, adjectival suffix.

I think you have it. I have a dictionary that gives the meaning of 'cardinal' as 'pivotal'. The translator has turned that adjective into a noun. The Hebrew word being translated (seren) is thought to mean 'axle', so using an English word meaning 'pivotal' seems appropriate.

Hello from Spain. Thank you for the review. What happened to the map explanation? It is one of the T.B.S. maps, isn't it! Thank you for the attention of the punctuation detail on Eph.4:11-12, it makes a much broader sense. KJV2006 isn't punctuating like this. Old Reina-Valera 1865 and 1909 keeps the punctuation. Beside this, I should say that old King James vocabulary is usually more comprehensible for me as catalan-spanish speaker than for an anglo-american sometimes. We keep much of the reformation bible vocabulary alive. It is shocking for me that english KJ bibles need a dictionary at the end for those words. My appreciation is also that modern translations miss the richness of the words. Reina was really affected for the burning of Servetus in Geneva, the spanish-french humanist died and and Reina, could not understand why from the center of the reformation this was not avoided. Reina translated Calvin's Instutes but was firtst simpathetic with Luther in chronological order. Reina was from a town near Sevilla (look in the map ). Sevilla was like New York during the 15th century: the rennasence, erasmian movement, then protestant, and forced to exile. In england he was accepted and protected from the lutheran church. Thanks for that informative comment, marc! (My map of Spain and Portugal is by the National Geographic Society, copyright 1998, not TBS. There are no maps in this Bible.) Did you mean to say 'Lutheran Church' in the next-to-last sentence of your comment, or 'Roman Catholic Church'?

@@RGrantJones I meant from the Lutheran Church, not the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Inquisition persecuted him from Spain to England, where they tried to accuse him of pederasty or homsexuality (he escaped from Spain dressed like a woman with the hebrew-greek originals under the skirt). I think it was in Engand where he finished the translation of the bible from the originals to spanish. He lost the book of Hebrews during the way! ..He had a long-suffering life.

@@marcenrich6468 - thanks. I must be missing something. Since it was the Roman Catholic Church that persecuted him, I'm not sure why he needed to be protected in England from being persecuted by Lutherans.

Grant, a biggie for me is that it keeps “chambering and wantoness” in Romans 13:13 like in the KJV but in Hebrews 12:1 replaces “besets” (which I like more than any other version) with “surrounds”. I had this on a paid audio version from the company but somehow they just up and lost my account. Haha. I guess I was not clear on what the Jubilee 2000 actually was when I bought it for my iPhone. I thought because of the title, it was a much easier to read version of the KJV (which is what I really want) but like the recent KJVER that came out in 2015, it looks like it’s not really that much different than a regular KJV 1769. Thanks for this fine review of this Bible. I assume it’s in print and available for purchase, I checked a couple different online Christian book sellers and they don’t seem to have it. I will try the website you showed near the front of the Bible. Thanks for holding the book higher up in your camera’s viewfinder since RU-vid’s stupid “new and improved” brainstorm is to have the bottom half of whatever is in the screen blacked-out with other info when you put it in pause to read a paragraph or other text.

If they do, let's hope they keep this relatively opaque paper. Most of the large/giant print Bibles I've seen have distracting show-through.

As a TR advocate, I could see myself finding this to be very useful. Just from pausing the video, it seems to depart from the TR in Revelation 18:20 by saying "saints, apostles, and prophets" rather than "holy apostles and prophets"

Thanks for the comment! That (Rev 18.20) may be a translation issue rather than a textual one. The translator seems to be taking saints as a noun rather than an adjective modifying apostles. If he were following the Byzantine or common eclectic text reading, he should have inserted an 'and' between saints and apostles. But I could be wrong: he could have followed the non-TR reading and omitted the 'and' for style points.

One of the only Bibles in the world that accurately states that Christ's Resurrection was on the Sabbath Day... Matthew 28:1, Mark 16:1-2, John 20:1, etc. And that the Disciples worshipped on the 7th Day Sabbath, Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:1-2. Praise YHWH! This Holy Bible doesn't mislead the world and pretend that "SABBATON" means 'week" when referring to the resurrected Christ. A filthy lie or mistranslation, take your pick!

Most Eastern "Orthdox Christians" I've spoken to just use the KJV for the new testament since it's a accurate translation of the TR or the NKJV

I'm not sure this is what you need, but the copyright page states that previous editions were printed in Colombia, copyright 2000, 2001, 2010. I interpret that to mean that it was first printed in 2000. Thanks for commenting!

Additional observations: Mt 8.12 (KJV): But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mt 8.12 (Jubilee Bible): But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Comment: The Jubilee Bible did not take the opportunity to clarify that "there" means "in that place", "thither", "yonder". In other words, this isn't simply a prediction that weeping and gnashing of teeth will occur at some indefinite place in the future. Instead, weeping and gnashing of teeth will occur "there", in "outer darkness". In Mt 7.22, the Jubilee Bible translates the Greek word δαιμόνια (from δαιμόνιον) as 'devils'. But in Mt 8.21, it translates δαίμονες (from δαίμων) as 'demons', thus distinguishing two related but distinct Greek words. I believe the KJV uses 'devils' for both.

I'm sure some people would fuss over the non-human animals in Genesis 1 having "living souls" in the Jubilee Bible. That said, it is an accurate reflection of the parallel language in chapters 1 and 2.
