TESTIMONIALS
‘Started hitting the moves laid out in these courses the very next class...extremely uplifting to have such a quick improvement in my game’ - Houston, TX
‘I’m the only white belt in the academy doing these moves…I’m suddenly competing at a blue belt and above level…thanks Coach Tom’ - LA, California
‘Some of the best strategies you are going to see for control and submission’ - London, UK
‘The detailed way Prof Tom breaks down his moves into the absolute essentials is just next level for me. This is absolute gold‘ - Sydney, Australia
‘Most of the guys at my Academy, have about 60lbs on me, but since purchasing your ‘Kimura Attack system’ and ’14 days’ everything has changed. I feel much more confident, roll better and the guys on the mat have commented on the same. Thanks, Coach Tom’ - Dallas, TX
‘I know you have your names for your courses, but I’ve renamed them the ‘Zero to hero’ courses, I went from getting constantly owned, to now being completely dominant on the mat in no time at all’ - San Diego, California
‘I use the course material heaps, and just recently put it into action at a local comp, walked away with double gold. No one was more surprised than me! - Miami, Florida
‘As a new white belt, these classes have helped me so much, Prof Tom’s technique, the details, and his attitude. I love how Prof. Tom shows the ‘mistakes people make’ and then shows the correct way of doing things. The only one I have ever seen do this’ - New York, New York
Great videos, great instruction. I just watch them for hours…Melbourne, Australia
‘The instructional saved me big time at a recent comp, my opponent was def more experienced, but that was ok, coz I had Prof Tom’s video in my brain. Nailed it and scored gold’ - Colorado, Denver
‘All of it. Everything you show in your awesome videos are now my ‘go to techniques’. Thanks for your vids Prof, Tom’ - Houston, TX
‘You really have to watch every second of the video because Prof, Tom drops these little nuggets of gold throughout the course. And they make ALL the difference. The only one doing this. Keep them coming Professor’ - NY, New York
‘If I could only be taught from one person, Prof Tom would be it. I can’t wait to train in person one day’ - Dallas, TX
‘Went to a recent competition with these videos fresh in my mind. I knew I had an edge and the confidence this gave me was unreal. Got the gold. All submission wins! - LA, California

Just used this tonight. Had my brown belt coach in Kesa Gatame. To my surprise he leaves arm out. I slide it under my leg and into the Americana. It works. I get the tap. His father looks over at him (Black Belt 🥋 that runs the gym) with surprise and disgust. I’m a one strip white belt. (NOBODY). Later we all line up, Professor says to higher belts it’s time to bring the pain to striped white belts and up. Kesa Gatame works. Side note: I’m going to get wrecked from now on.

3:01, It IS called Head & Arm control. This is a fundamental Catch wrestling position, and the name is exactly what you said. Those guys were hitting it for years, before jiu-jitsu guys figure out that you can also control the guy without the far-side underhook. I remember still 20 years ago, practically all jiu-jitsu coaches taught this move as "wrong" positioning (including the Gracies and Machodos), which is also why you don't get points for it in jiu-jitsu tournaments. Funnily enough, the same coaches who slandered the Head & Arm position didn't even have the right body-weight positioning themselves when demonstrating it, so I guess they were right about their own technique. It wasn't made popular in jiu-jitsu until that Catch wrestling fellow Josh Barnett used it to submit Dean Lister with it, so maybe we should call it the "Barnett".

I have been doing Kesa for 52 years submitting heaps. Just learned the Kimura from your video, so, old dogs new tricks. Osu. Can I just say? I get a better response for submission by turning my body slightly away, sort of looking over my left shoulder. Puts pressure on their diaphragm without you leaning back and possibly getting turned over. Also, I tell my people to hold the arm under your armpit. Pull it in clamping the armpit tight. the hand is free to do whatever. Professor, thank you. I loved your clear explanation. I commenced Judo in 1966 aged 10. Just promoted to Shodan on 25th August with the Aust Kodokan Judo association. I know, I'm a slow learner.

WoW! BJJ guys will never admit this works, because BJJ designed an entire system to break this position, versus learning this position. So they don't know how to react to it, but just tell you how to escape from it. It's not the best way of teaching if you can't hold the position. Thank you for describing the importance of the arm. The arm is the most important part, at some points you can lose the head, but if you have the arm, you can suck them back in. lastly, you took more of a wrestlers position, with weight on the chest, that's cool for big guys, but for small guys, you need to spin with them to hold them there. You control arm and head, and when they rotate into you, you just rotate with them, "You go they go" squeezing the head and pulling the arm tighter. You want the shoulder of the opponent under your leg at all times. My son at 115lb has held off 200lb guys in this position, for a good minute, not submitting, but just controlling by using the above technique. If you can't control this position, I would not recommend submitting from position, lots of things can wrong and you can hurt your partner. It's better to work on control. Here is the legendary Sensei's teaching this position from the 50's: 24 minutes in they talk about groundwork and Ketsa Gatame and show the positions. The leg under the shoulder is what most people teaching Ketsa tend to forget. Sid the arm, It's the second most important technique for the ride. The head can get sucked back in. My sons go to BJJ and Judo, they do well in this position at BJJ clubs. I do Judo. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A2hgzgJuJOo.html

I got a pretty decent Judo background, and when I started BJJ I heavily used this position because of my background. Got some success with it. But my teacher said he didn't like that pin, because it was to easy to escape because you already had the underhook. He said you can only catch beginner with it. So I was kinda force to abandon it although Kesa was always my favourite. Thank you for giving it some love ^^

That was excellent. Thank you. I am so grateful that Jigoro Kano's work (and Kimura's, to be fair) survives. I particularly liked you highlighting the importance of keeping the lead leg straight out in front of you, in order to not get rolled. And I can attest to how effective, and painful, leaning on the ribs can be - somebody did that to me in (Judo) class, and I was very sore for about 3 weeks afterwards. And I tapped the second I felt that pressure and pain. One important aspect of Kesa Gatame is to make sure your inside hip (the one touching your opponent's body) is doing just that: touching his body. Any space between you and your opponent allows him to shrimp and potentially roll you. In addition to Kesa Gatame (Scarf Hold) here, you have Makura Kesa Gatame (Pillow Scarf hold), Kata Gatame (Shoulder Hold), and Kuzure Kesa Gatame (Broken Scarf Hold).

Love this. As someone who does both Judo and Jiu Jitsu, I can state with a fairly high degree of confidence that it is almost impossible to escape from a good Kesa applied by a competent practitioner of the same size or bigger. That said, I have always thought that the donwside of Kesa was the limited options for submissions with out giving up position. This really opens up Kesa as an offensive position and not just a defensive controlling position (i.e. win via pin in Judo or wear them out before changing position and looking for a more offensive position in Jiu Jitsu).

My favorite part at 8:01 " But I have a favorite" With a sinister smile🤙🏻 great stuff Professor, I tend to trap the far arm,and do the old talking on the phone trick to the step over series but I may start doing this head control to some of my students haha. When they tap I will send them your regards.

Great technique. I have had lots of success with the modified version where my arm is under his arm instead of in the headlock. Submissions come very quickly as the pressure is intense. Got that version from a Rhadi Ferguson video. Very high percentage.
