When you are trying to build bigger pecs and a more muscular chest, you have to do so without compromising the health of your shoulders. In this video, I’m going to show you one postural adjustment you can make on every chest exercise to get more aesthetic development from your pecs without compromising the shoulder joint in the process.
It starts with an understanding of the position of the upper arm in the socket and how this impacts your pressing. Your arm can either be titled anteriorly, which is incredibly common due to postural maladjustments, neutral or posteriorly tilted. In order to get your joint away from this anterior position you need to be sure you have adequate flexibility in your pec minor first and foremost. This is covered in another video on this channel where I show you how to stretch your pecs most effectively.
Even with a somewhat tight pec minor however, you can still manually make this adjustment by focusing on the position of the sternum during every chest exercise. Likely, you will find that your sternum is angled down and forward before starting even your first rep of a bench press or dip. This is incorrect. You want to get it lifted until the top of it is flat and angled parallel to the floor. This automatically sets your shoulders down and back.
It doesn’t just retract your shoulder blades, which is a common misconception of what is needed to get into the healthy pressing position. Instead, it will put your shoulders not just back but down as well which will stabilize the ac joint and give your glenohumeral joint more space to move through superiorly to avoid impingement. This is a very easy adjustment to make and one that can get you feeling the difference within the first few reps.
This can be applied to not just the bench press and dip, but the pushup or floor fly as well. The key is that by establishing a down and back position of the shoulders you allow your joints to be more protected while giving you a better mechanical advantage to execute from. This latter point is explained by the position of the insertion of the upper pecs on the humerus. When you shrug your shoulders, the muscle fibers of the upper pecs become more slack and the prestretch capable of producing a more forceful contraction is lost.
As you can see, when you are developing your chest or any other muscle group for that matter, it isn’t just the aesthetics that matter but the longevity with which you are training that muscle should matter as well. Both do at ATHLEAN-X and if you head to athleanx.com and get our ATHLEAN-X Training System you will see first hand just how much more successful you can become in your training if you get this right.

I got injured about two weeks ago because I added some more weight while training parallels and I couldnt stand the retraction of the shoulders. Thx Jeff for the advice. PD: Could you make a video talking about how to strengthen the trapezious in order to improve the scapular retraction to stand bigger weights? Thanks.
@flamingrotors1343

You could do exercises like facepulls, W-rows, band pull-aparts (supinated grip), heck even inverted bodyweight rows are good for the traps. Most of these exercises improve pushing stability by strengthening the traps, rhomboids and other lesser trained supportive back muscles

Either of those options sounds good, as long as you can stay between 8 and 12 reps per set. So if you can manage 12, 10, and 8 reps for your 3 sets using the same weight, that works fine. If you aren't even able to get to 8 reps on that third set, it might be worthwhile to drop the weight down a tiny bit for the final set, or giving yourself a longer rest between sets.

Weight loss pills are never a healthy idea. Losing that stubborn belly fat is purely about diet, control your caloric intake and they'll eventually go away.

I swear I've implemented so much of this guy's advice and the results are astonishing! Jeff Cavalier definitely knows what he's talking about. Form is key when trying to get the body u want, not the amount of weight...very informative video as usual.

Jeff, been hitting the weights hard for couple months now.. but i feel I hit a wall!! Haven't seen any improvements in a while.. it's frustrating!! Any suggestions? Or do I need to implement supplements? I don't take anything at the moment, all natural
@Rosefinity
@Rosefinity 7 лет назад
Don't only adjust the weights, also rotate between exercises when you reach a plateau. But in general, you want to progressively overload your muscles. Add a little bit more weight than what you usually would do. Your muscles will definitely feel it. And if you can't go heavier, choose a different exercise that hits the same muscle. for example, if you use only barbells for benchpressing, stop that and use dumbbells for a while. Also consider training maybe full body instead of splits. Or consider doing splits instead of full body. Try to dedicate 1 day for intensity (less sets and reps, but heavy weight) 3 sets of 5-8 And dedicate 1 day for volume (higher reps and sets, but medium weight) 4-5 sets of 8-15 You dont need supplements if you are getting enough food in. There are a lot of things you can do to improve, but everyone is different, so u need to test what works for you. In general tho, progressively overloading a muscle will work for most people. also consider doing full body 3x per week. Where you hit each muscle 3 timer per week, instead of doing a 4-5 day split where you hit each muscle only once per week. So upping the frequency can totally help.

Rosefinity thanks a lot for the advice!!! I will try this! I will say I am guilty of doing same exercises that worked really well when i first started.. but the intensity mix sounds great!!! I am eating pretty good, I have decent size but not enough definition! Gotta fill in those shirts! You kno

Anytime man. Ask 10 different people for advice, you get 10 different answers. In the end the people tell you what worked for them. And their advice might not necessarily work for you. And that's why I think that you should just test everything, even if it doesn't sound logical. Because no one can tell you what is best for you, you are the only one that can figure that out from your personal experience. Just make sure to avoid getting injured, and that is why we watch Athlean-x videos! You seem to be putting in the work, so you are already further than the average person, remember to be patient as well. I am certain you will make all kindz of gainz my brother, I wish you nothing but success!

Daniel Solorzano also maybe try some calisthenics and try to confuse your muscles as Jeff said in his last vid. A different feeling for your body and muscles resulting in confusion.
