My parents wouldn’t let me race when I was a kid. I let me son race at age 4 🤷🏼♂️ at some point you’ll get to make your own decisions but don’t wish your life away.
According to the wall in my kitchen, he was 45.5” tall around this time. I wasn’t a huge fan of our time with the ttr50. It ran very well. However the kids rode the other bikes more. It was a pain for them to shift. The automatic clutch added extra resistance. More so than the crf110 they have now. I tried adjusting it, but we found ourselves always putting it in 2nd or 3rd and letting them go ride.
My daughter is 8. But she’s really short for her age. The ttr-50 fits her perfectly right now. Once she out grows it id probably go with a Honda crf110.
Is he just starting out? The Yamaha pw50 is a solid bike to start out on. My son is 5 and still rides it a lot. It’s been relatively unchanged in design for decades. Look for a clean used one online or buy new. New they are around $1,700 out the door. You may be able to find a clean used one for $1000 or less. Since design hasn’t changed much, you can find parts everywhere for a decent price. I just put a new piston, rings, rod bearing and top end gaskets in last week for around $70 in parts.
