Some bonus footage from the "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" DVD. Steve Sanders discusses his reaction to the film. He tries to explain that the movie portrays Billy negatively and that Billy is actually a nice guy.
Legend has it, after the Make-a-Wish child beat Billy in a game of Wii bowling, Billy sent Brian Kuh to his house to disassemble the machine and inspect it for gummy substances.
I can't help but imagine that Billy Mitchell makes Sanders and Brian Kuh enage in Turkish oil wrestling bouts. Winner gets the privelage of doing things like washing his car and mowing his yard.
@@BA-vv4jy That's an unfair assessment of someone based on looks. I wear a Mohawk and I'm covered in tattoos when on both sides of my head and would give anyone the shirt off my back.
@@Hollyweirdification not the same. I trust you 1000 times over than this Billy Mitchell. His hair is straight up off-putting weird.. like no one else will ever rock Billy’s hair, because it’s _that weird_ , if that makes sense. Think Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men. Just truly disturbing villain hair lol.
I wish there was a sequel where Billy and Steve had one more whack at it.. But with two original machines and they are allowed their own joysticks but they must be approved by the same technician that built the machines...
I've also seen the King of Kong. let's just say that my wife and i were so impressed that named our cat "Stevie Weebey". Steve Wiebe is one of our heroes.
So I guess it's the Prodigy against the Outsider -- We'll see if he can handle the pressure *bleepbloopblop* Oh, it sounds like he just got another free life so -- uh, but maybe he'll catch a random fireball or barrel....
The only legend in all this is Steve Wiebe. He proved himself under immense pressure, dove into the shark cage and came out unblemished. I'm in awe of that guy.
@tedddy edwards Your making shit out of your ass. That wasn't Weibe's fault. TG knew about it before and did nothing because it was in their best interest to promote Billy Mitchell. You show physical evidence of cheating then ill believe you but right now it just load of crap...
If he really loved the idea of real competition, he would've faced Mr. Wiebe live regardless of how long it had been since he played. When someone challenges you personally, and goes as far as to go to your own hometown to play with you, for Billy to snub Steve like that publicly and on camera just reeks of seriously unsportsmanlike behavior. The LEAST Billy could have done was at least say hi and greet him as a fellow Donkey Kong enthusiast and welcome the challenge.
Have you ever seen this apparently the whole movie was bullshit and Billy was never the real DK champion. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_GH4tPq7034.html
They thought it was strange that someone beat that old still standing world record of Billy Mitchell when in reality Tim Sczerby was the official Twin Galaxies record holder for some time already but was never even mentioned in the film .
In retrospect twin galaxies and Billy suspected Steve to be a cheater because they had been cheating for years to get their scores but Steve could DO IT LIVE!
no it was to protect billy and twin galaxy, he had to cheat for the legacy, he was like the Michael jordan of basketball that was the image and fame of this.. steve was just good and put in the time and effort and figured out the game, he did what very few will want to do, the reality is those people like shroud chcotaco ect and ect are the cheaters today.... to stand above others you must seek ways to do it.. what will make you stand out in front of 1000s? well what if your dream was to be the best or one of the best in the word? i would let you get away with cheating for various interest in return? you have one opportunity its your life dream, it is not possible unless you do this deal, its your one shot, what do you do? go ask the people who are the top of their game in the Olympic games and see what they do to outbeat competition and set records... most things in life are fraud and lies, its the sad reality, its for various reasons, none of which is usually what people think
Word -- you can see his internal struggle, his loyalty to Billy & company colliding against his desire for the truth and fair play. He sees Billy & Co. becoming tyrants and it's eating at him.
The part in the movie closer to the end where they are sitting together and billy says “I don’t know enough about the situation to answer” The look on this guys face was screaming “I want to fucking punch you”
@@DavidvanDeijk Everybody in the niche Arcade highscore scene kinda new it. TG under Day was extreme fishy. 2012 was the year when Dwayne Richard released King of Con. The problem was that old TG had more power @ the time & the speedrunning scene wasn't that big+not necessrily intrested in the Arcade highscores.
Not true. Here in Ga where I live we have a convention called Southern Fried Gaming Expo once a year. Billy Mitchell usually drives up to make appearances and on his way back to Hollywood Florida he stopped at a barcade named Retro Reboot and Bar. The owner Jeremy had never seen the documentary King of Kong, but noticed a tall guy with long hair playing his Donkey Kong and after about 2 and a half hours he decided to walk over to the machine to notice this guy was over 800,000 thousands points and went on to break a million before the the kill screen. He then stared talking with the guy and found out he was Billy Mitchell and learned of the documentary. He asked Billy to autograph that King Kong and Billy did.
The irony of his comments on MAME and Billy's trustworthiness is just too much. I liked Steve Sanders in the movie because even though he was clearly Billy's friend, he seemed like he was very welcoming towards Steve Wiebe and actually was disappointed when Wiebe failed to break the (bogus video) record at the Guinness competition in Florida. But the whole problem with TG was the idea that certain gamers - Billy Mitchell and Todd Rogers most prominently - were above reproach and no one was allowed to even question whatever they claimed.
Walter was the one that organised the publicity piece and gave the player information to the magazines, why wont they come clean after all this time and tell the truth that Walter was in on it and helped them make up their profiles? Walter wanted to portray that he had all the best players from US arcades there, so orchestrated everything because he had craved publicity and fame all his life, he made several failed attempts to break into showbiz through his life and his last failure was a recording artist lol, he thought he was going to turn them into superstar gamers and be the manager but it did not work, people lost interest fast. The only reason people know them is because the documentaries made 20 years later
So Billy's a great guy because he's inspiring dying kids to be cheats. That tape billy submitted was so fishy, it looked like he edited that tape of him getting the 1 mil score, he still has never done it in person. He wouldn't even show the tape to Steve; what a liar and a loser.
the time he did it in public he did it from a different room to the where the crowds were, they were able to watch his screen on the monitors, so for all we know they could have just been viewing a recording, is it really in public if you are in a different room to everyone else?
wait. some little kid dying of cancer's last wish was to meet a guy who was good at Donkey Kong 20 years ago? I am finding that really hard to believe. for one thing, nobody in 2006 under the age of 30 gave a shit about Donkey Kong. and the movie hadn't even come out yet, so how the hell would this kid know of, let alone idolize, Billy Mitchell? Sounds like exactly the kind of story Billy would wildly exaggerate, though. I would have loved to be there in the room for that appearance, though. Some poor kid dying of cancer feeling bad for and humoring the ego of this arrogant bearded weirdo he's never heard of strutting around his hospital room.
I think.it is now clear that this had nothing to do with integrity. If they were truly honest, they wouldn’t have kept moving the goal posts for Wiebe. These guys wanted Billy to top Wiebe no matter.
Billy has always been a star and wanted to be in the spotlight. He is often showing off and seems arrogant etc. Actually he is really a nice guy. I have had contact with him a few times during my time playing videogames and he is very polite and kind. And very honest and straight forward. Sure, it can sound like bragging from his part but he is the real deal and he has the skills to prove what he "braggs" about :)
@steveingvar that could be true, but he's still a mitchell fan, when steve entered to the restaurant, sanders said to billy "i don't how he managed to come in"
I can absolutely agree. It seemed like he was the only oppositional character that got better as the movie went on. At first he seemed like one of Billy's disciples, but... then at the end it felt like he really was on Steve's side. He seems like a swell guy. Brian Kuh, though.... ugh....
@awiginton That's true. In the film festival questions and answers for this movie, Steve S. reminds the audience that the movie is just that, a movie; not to be taken too literal.
Strange. In an interview with the director or someone they claimed that they actually had to make Billy Mitchell appear nicer than he actually was because he was so despicable in real life.
tedddy edwards the movie had some scripting and some silly moments and yes some things are kept out of the movie to make it more tense. But it's wasn't all scripted seeing as events that were filmed are used as evidence by Twin Galaxies to scrub all of Billy Mitchell's records for cheating of course there is a lot more evidence but pretty interesting
You're wrong. He does NOT love the idea of real competition. He loves the idea of being number one. Whether that trait is a good one is a different matter. But it is definitely not the same as a thriving competitive spirit, which by definition entails the prospect of losing to a possibly superior performer. He kills off all of his spare men to make the point that he HAS spare men to kill off. It's not a competitive spirit that drives him to do that; on the contrary, he enjoys rubbing it in.
My favorite part of the movie is when they were all at the pub getting dinner and Steve walks in he was talking to billie on his phone, with his soda up to his mouth like he was trying to not be noticed talking about how Steve is here and wasn't invited... it was textbook juvenile petty behavior and so funny to me.
right hhahahaha all for the movie if you ask me and the part where Steve is playing then Billy says to his so called wife he is just like and theirs some people we don't want to talk to
I saw the movie for the first time this week on ESPN Classic. My questions is why is everyone defending Billy Mitchell for his actions, and not Billy himself? He is the definition of a narcissist. These guys call out people for not doing it the "right way in a live environment", then they send it tapes!!! How the hell is anyone not supposed to think Billy is a jerk.
Yeah Steve Weibe wasn't even chasing Billy's record it was Tim scuzby That might be spelled wrong but He wasn't chasing billy's record. The gummy substance on the right ship was for the double donkey kong board to run donkey kong jr. Which I believe it should have been in a sub category.
@KingofGUI ... Billy was acting like a little child, but a week later they removed it because it couldn't be verified, and their judges said it looked extremely fake.
billy cant get a grip that there is always a better player. if he was a true champion he would love the idea of real competition, you can only get better by playing better players. its like playing on any game system & changing the difficulty each time it gets to easy
It is common knowledge that Billy was actually shown in a more light-hearted way in the movie and is actually an even bigger knob in the flesh. Wiebe was set up by Shildt without knowing and since then has proved he is one of the best. Mitchell is good, give credit where credit is due but Chien pisses on both of em at the moment.
Use Google. You might actually find some more facts. I love 'The King of Kong' too, but some of it was contrived. Even Wiebe says so. And Dr. Hank Chien is now the DK Champion. Mark Kiehl is the DK Jr Champion. Mitchell is currently in 3rd.
@Abigale Marie: That's because unlike Tim Sczerby, the guys as Steve Wiebe, Billy Mitchell, Walter day and Steve Sanders WERE in the film and since the producers wanted some INTERESTING personalities they excluded Tim Sczerby. They took the interesting guys for the film and paid money to the right people so to speak.
I understand where they're coming from but they really treated Wiebe badly. Someone should have just stepped back and realized they had to be fair and treat him and Billy Mitchell the same. Wiebe went through all the hoops, and was denied two world records by Billy, who was being egotistical and refused to even defend his title in a fair match. His lackeys were no better, what was his title worth that they would be some childish and vindictive in defending it.
Billy Mitchell arrogant? Maybe. Billy Mitchell confidant. Yes. he is a business owner, and an entrepreneur. It comes with the territory. Now that Someone, from neither side has the record, it wipes the slate clear. I am not making any judgments about anyone in this film, as I think they are all lying (in one form, or another). The movie was contrived, and ugly sides were shown. Captain Awesome is the only one with no reason to lie.
Of course these modern kids can game better than the people from the 80s these kids will play harder games longer than anybody did that in the convenience of their bedroom for months straight
Billy Mitchell is arrogant. He was also used to play the villain and Steve the hero. Billy's score the one you seen at fun spot recorded was purposely scored to beat what Steves 947k record was at the time of playing it by 100k. The score in the movie where it was 1.047 was on a 1.1 pace until billy laid up to just beat Steve by 100k.
@Crazyfuqndude There is obviously more to the story than what was portrayed in the film. And if you had any sense, you would be able to recognize that. Stop being mean.
I've never personally met any of these guys, but I'm sure the documentary showed certain people in an ill light. I'm a fan of them all, and let's be honest, they help keep the classic gaming community alive! Game On!
@steveingvar I get that feeling too. I dislike how some people judge Sanders and Billy based entirely on how they were portrayed in this movie, I'm sure they're both nice people in real life.
Its easy to forget that Billy managed to destroy everyone back in 1982 without the use of the internet or sharing strategies. Steve W and Hank etc. would never have come close without the way in which we share information now.
