The Kingkiller Chronicles is one of the most compelling modern epic fantasy series. The Series follows Kvothe, a young arcanist in training. In the Kingkiller Chronicles, magic is more defined than in some other fantasy series, it conforms to specific rules that have has repeatable effects. The only exception is the mysterious power of “Naming” which involves learning to “true” name of something and gaining mastery of it, hence the name of the first novel in the series, The Name of the Wind.
The Key element of the novels revolves around Kvothe’s quest to find the Legendary evil entities known as the Chandrian, who he witnessed murder his troupe at a young age, leaving him orphaned. According to the to legends there are seven Chandrian. Cyphus, Usnea, Stercus, Alenta, Dalcenti, Alaxel, who is also known as Haliax or Lanre, and Ferule who is also known as Cinder.

@@FelixS. I wonder how many cross-over fans exist. I imagine most of the people who have read Kingkiller have no idea what you're talking about. Kudos to you sir. As slow as Kentaro has been at least we've gotten something in the last decade (bit of an exaggeration i know). and Ruthfuss doesn't have the same excuse as GRRM who has published other books and consulted on TV shows etc. pax

IMO, the clue to the Chandrian's objective is given near the outset of the series when Haliax was lecturing Cinder. It seems that a name only has power while it is remembered. I suspect that whatever curse was laid on the seven can only be lifted when their names are forgotten. So every time their name is used, they show up and destroy that person and everyone around them.

I thought this as well, I hope we get confirmation in the third book (if it ever comes out). Also funny cause the chandrian will still remember each others name xD

@DiscreetStigma

Oh my dude, solid video. But I'm going to have to argue that the character you call "Lax" is not "Haliax". First of all, I'm pretty sure the name is "Iax". Secondly, I think it's way more likely that Iax is Jax. Jax is mentioned in Skarpi's story, the fall of Myr Tariniel, as being able to rival Selitos and Lyra in naming. Felurian mentions him as being the one who stole the moon and sparked the creation war, and he's the main character in Hespa's story about the boy who tricked the tinker. In this instance I think it's likely the Haliax and Iax/Jax are related, but I think the name Haliax means something like "servant of Iax" "son of Iax" "shadow of Iax" Aka, I would mean to theorize that Lanre sought help from Iax to save Lyra and it lead to him becoming Haliax.

Jax (an unlucky boy) is the origin of the lackless/luckless/lockless family. The box with no lid is what he trapped the name of the moon and when kvothe opens it the doors open to the fae realm which is how the creatures and fae start coming into the world. Lanre may be related to the lackless and kvothe definitely is. Also notice how kvothe sang felurians name? The Chandran are afraid of singers.
@fulcrumthebrave5715
@fulcrumthebrave5715 5 лет назад
@@lrae9519 I think you're right Iax being the start of the Lackless line and you could be right about what's inside the Lackless box, it's very possible. Kvothe is definitely related because of the line in the children's rhyme: the son who brings the blood and Nathalie Lockless being his mom (from his father's song: it's worth my life, to make my wife not tally a lot less). I don't think Kvothe is a singer yet but he might become a full one when/if he meets the Tahl. I've heard a lot of people say that he will in DoS but idk. He might just need to listen but never will (like how the old man, probably Teccam, tried to teach Jax/Iax but failed). El'the probably means listener but Kvothe won't make it before he gets expelled for opening the four plate door, I'm guessing. I've been thinking lately that the Lackless box could hold the piece of 'mountain glass' that Selitos used to gouge out his eye. His blood (i.e. him according to the second law of sympathy-a part of thing can represent a whole thing) is contained in the wood of a single tree and the box is being held shut with someone's alar, binding him to the tree. That is why he cannot leave the tree. Selitos gained a better sight (being able to see perfectly into the future) when he took out his eye but the destuction of Myr Tariniel made him unfamthonably angry. He will burn the world down if it means getting revenge on Haliax and the Chandrian, that's why the Maurlain (sp) vase had the Ciridae looking the scariest. Remember, Feurlian even tells us that there no human Amyr which makes me think Selitos was faen or whatever people made the fae(shapers, Rauch, whatever). The Ctheah even gives us a hint when it says that's why it "helps" Kvothe, because Cinder "did him a wrong turn once", that wrong turn could have been betraying their civilization and joining Lanre/Haliax. The Ctheah is now obsessed with having the Chandrian killed, a nearly impossible task that leaves a huge path of death and destruction in its wake, while the Chandrian seem to want to be forgotten but still sow misery and chaos. Their endgame might be to start another creation war to bring about the end of the world so that Haliax can finally die but idk, just trying to explain why Cinder was leading the bandits that were stealing the Maer's taxes making King Robert's and the Maer's relationship sour. That's a very thought out and reasoned plan and it was well-executed. If Kvothe wasn't there to call down the lightning, with some help from an angel, then the bandits could have fought off who knows how many men. Lastly, Cinder was either able to teleport himself away or haliax was there with him which I find interesting. Or some stupid, foolish shaper made the Cthaeh but at least had the foresight to bind it to the tree. I'm kinda more inclined to believe this since Bast says Iax spoke the Cthaeh before stealing the moon. It could just get amusement by sowing death and destruction and that's why it sends Kvothe after Cinder and the rest of the seven. I do believe Kvothe is successful in killing at least Cinder since we see his sword in the frame story, as the sword Folly. Kvothe's biggest folly was taking the Ctheah's bait, following thru with it and killing Cinder. In doing so, Haliax probably learned Kvothe's true name and that's why Kvothe changed it to Kote, so that Haliax won't have as much power over him. Kvothe might actually basically be a Chandrian, that's why the skinchanger asked him if he was a rhinta. In almost every language that has rhinta (or something close) it means Chandrian, like Ademric. Haliax bound Kvothe to him after Kvothe managed to kill Cinder because I'm guessing he wants there to always be seven Chandrian. Kvothe might try to kill himself to escape his fate like Lanre (that's why everyone thinks he's dead, cause he actually was. Also somewhere it is mentioned that all of his scars are old and faded, all except one. I'm guessing that was the wound that killed him) but either Haliax, Denna (she's probably dead tho so not likely) or his own power, like Lanre, bring him back to life. His story is a mirror to Lanre's because of his failure to learn from Lanre's folly, like Ben tried to warn him, except that Kvothe realized and changed the ending by changing himself. I think that's why he can't open the thrice locked chest, the lock unseen only lets Kvothe open the chest and Kote is no longer Kvothe, except in flashes. We've been told time and time again that this is a sad story but I think that Kote will regain his former self and get the ending that he wants, death. (the patient cut-flower sound of a man who is waiting to die). Then the next series, about Laurel (spelling) Young-Again will probably have some of the same characters (i hope anyway, Im not ready to say goodbye to Bastas) and conflicts. She might end up trying to clean up Kvothe's mess, I think that's where she gets her start anyway. If you got this far, I'm impressed. Thanks for reading :)

@@fulcrumthebrave5715 my theory on why the kote/kvothe change is that something will happen to his hands. his sense of identity is so tied to him playing the lute, its what kept him from losing his mind, its why he says he even has hands when vashet has doubts about teaching him. seriously hurting his hands is something that kvothe dreads all the time. personal theory though
@fulcrumthebrave5715
@fulcrumthebrave5715 5 лет назад
@@AverageAwesomeDude I was actually just listening the part of WMF when Kvothe is in Ademre and Vashet at one point, while talking about how the Adem would prevent Kvothe from sharing the katan, says that they would cripple him. Not anything gruesome but she mentioned cutting off the last two fingers on his right hand. We don't see Caesura/kaysura (spelling) which makes me think that it's either in the chest or it has been returned to Ademre. If Kvothe returned it himself, after he did whatever he did to screw up the whole world, I could see him willingly take his punishment. As a kicker, somewhere around the start of NotW, Kote is getting into his bed and there's a few lines about his scars. IIRC, it goes something like "all were old and faded. Little more than silver lines. All except one." I've never been able to figure out what scar is being referenced there but it could be a massive scar like the one that we see on the hand of the kitchen worker guy in Ademre. Especailly since there's quite a few times that Kvothe is holding one hand with another.

Jesus lord damn, I didn't know you read or even made videos on the KKC too. Just watching your video reminds me how fast the pacing would have to be (at least compared to the other books) for Rothfuss to rap the entire story up (Kvothe finding out about the Amyr and the Chandrian and where they are, getting his 'revenge' maybe?, how Ambrose gets Kvothe expelled from the university, this war Kvothe apparently started, whatever happens to Kvothe after he finishes the story up to where he's speaking to the Chronicler, and possibly 100 other things I've forgotten about) in 800-odd pages; I don't envy him. With the depth of his world and the amount of lore there is with the Chandrian and et cetera, I'm thinking it would have been better for him not to constrain it to 3 books, but tell me what you think. Also, have you heard the theory about Melulan Lackless (who hates Kvothe for being Ruh) being Kvothe's aunt? I saw it on a Reddit post and the reasoning behind it was that Melulan said she hated the Ruh because her sister was stolen/kidnapped by one, and it's mentioned in the first book that Kvothe's father stole his mother away from her family and inheritance or something. It then went on to say the war Kvothe started might be to do with him trying to usurp the Maer and Melulan Lackless' child of the throne. Food for thought if you haven't heard about it yet, and I'd be interested to watch a video of your take on that theory in your style.

It is still my favorite audio book for its narration. Also Tak a game described in A Wise Mans Fear was actually developed into a very intricate board game with simple rules like described in the book. If you like the Kingkiller chronicles and want more of the universe, pick up Tak.

I like the theory that behind the stone gate VALARITAS is "In Temerant Noistra" (In addition to a lot of other books that talk about the Amyr). All stories are one story, and this is the story of Folly. Again and again. Pat hints that everything in the world is far more intertwined than we would come to assume from a story. The core idea of this series is rephrased again and again: "Enthusiasm, passion, and ignorance are not a good combination. Someone is likely to get hurt." "Knowing your own ignorance is the first step to enlightenment." "Owls are wise. They are careful and patient. Wisdom precludes boldness. That is why owls make poor heroes." Kvothe consistently doesn't learn his lesson. His passion continues to burn brightly through the pain, heartbreak, broken bones, inescapable betrayals, and the occasional taste of plum and nutmeg... Except he did learn his lesson, and he learned it too well. He so shrank from his passion that he hid, changed his name, and went from heroic warrior arcanist to small-town inkeep. If we accept that all stories in this world are one story, we must accept that Pat has already given us the ending. Book 3 isn't the ending, but it's the missing information that shows us he already gave us the ending disguised as an unrelated story. So, we have one question to answer to fill in the gaps left by book 3, but Pat has given us the tools. What kind of pain, what kind of folly could be so painful and damning that he would finally give up? We know he's not overly concerned about the greater good; his brashness is contrary to the thoughtfulness required. We know he's beyond breaking from physical pain and emotional distress; all of the beatings, the powerful people able to kill him at a whim, his rape in Tarbean; a normal person would be more traumatized. No, Kvothe only has one weakness... guilt over harming his loved ones. The only way he could break is if his folly hurt his loved ones so deeply that there's no way to repair the damage. This means that thematic consistency, Kvothe's folly must be turning his friends into the Chandrian. Kvothe (aka Selitos) will do this through making an incredibly stupid mistake that hurts his friends and then making the incredibly stupider mistake of trying to fix things by reaching back through time to prevent his folly in the first place. The 'folding house' he creates for this purpose using naming, sympathy, and artifice will eventually be called The Faye. The fallout from this mistake causes a war that destroys his friends' homes, the seven major nations within The Four Corners of Civilization. To follow the theme, there will be one Chandrian from each nation. Gray Dalcenti will come from ruined Ademre (Likely Vashet or Celian). Stercus will come from destroyed Ceald (Likely Willem). Usnea will come from The Underthing, representing Vintas because she was born there (I'll give you three guesses). Cinder will come from Modeg (Likely Sovoy). Cyphus will be an arcanist from the commonwealth (I'm crossing my fingers that it's Dal, but with no real evidence). Pale Alenta will come from Yll (Either Denna or someone we meet in book 3). Finally, Haliax is the most brutal for the reader. In whatever mistake Kvothe has that causes the war, it will result in Fela's death. Sim will lose his mind, a Lanre without his Lyra. Thus begins the Creation War.

Emilio Camacho Erice Thanks for the heads up. I try not to compare stuff with 'A Song of Ice and Fire' because it's like an awesome exception. But sometimes I can't help it. Because I was introduced to it first.

Tehn yeah I had to put it down because of the characters but I retook it again, kvothe is a self insert character who's only flaw is being arrogant his achievements in the time he makes it break suspension of disbelief in my case at least The prose is good though and the pacing too

I highly recommend skipping this, it is shockingly bad. It's a bad first attempt from a hack writer who wrote a self insert OC that aimed to coast of the 'nice guy' reddit thing. If you want a new great fantasy book look into 'The Darkness That Comes Before'

The doors of stone is not a reference to the 4 plated door (I think) but a reference to the way stones, which were originally doors between the mortal, fae and 3rd (dark realm). The Lockless box holds the key to opening all of them.

The legend about the beginning of the creation war revolves around "Iax" (alternative "Jax") not "Lax". And he is not the same person as "Lanre" (alternative "Haliax" or "Alaxel"), since Lanre (as the good guy) defeated him. After his love died Lanre turned mad and became Haliax (became the bad guy).

Sir no. Lanre spoke to the cathae to get the power to bring Lyra back to life that is how he became hilax. That is literally fact in the book what do you mean.

Yes and no. In many ways he's a subversion of the hero trope. Tragic and arrogant rather than chosen and noble. But at times, the Author clearly uses Kvothe as a self insert. Especially when Kvothe waxes about politics and religion.

You say that the reason the Chandrian killed Kvothe's family is so no one would know about them and oppose them, but isn't it a solid theory that when the story of them is told that they feel agony? I mean Haliax is Lanre is Encanis amiright?

Though at least I'm fairly sure it can't be as underwhelming as the slow regard of silent things was. That is a great book for boring yourself to sleep with.

Doug. Navarone I think it has something to do with it not following the typical format you see in most fantasy or sci-fi works. Their is no "main" character. No build up to things. As a reader you just get dropped into the middle of a world with hundreds of thousands of back story and a massive cast of characters. I absolutely love MBoTF. It is without a doubt my all time favorite series of all time.

Ok. I have 2 possible theories that contradict each other. 1: Lorren is an Amyr. Everyone seems to think it. A possibility. 2: Lorren is a Chandrian. I don't have the books in front of me but I recall one of the Chandrian being unable to feel or smile. Describes Lorren pretty well. Perhaps he is a caretaker for the Chandrian. It is mentioned that he periodically leaves. As a Master, he is never scrutinized for things in the performance of duty. A shaky theory but worth putting out there.
