Pretty simple, the Cthaeh could start a prophecy centuries earlier when talking with someone else. Knowing the story would spread and feed a sense of adventure in a man that would come see it later. This will help Kvothe cause even more damage because he sees everything he is doing as mirroring a righteous hero. When in fact he is working destruction.

@patrickhill8494
@patrickhill8494 3 года назад
@nemo vi Defeating the Cthae is unlikely to be the climax of Kvothe's story. Rothfuss has stated that this trilogy is meant to be a primer, or prequel of sorts, to his other intended works in this setting. That being said, you may be right. I agree that the Cthae appears to be the most threatening antagonist in the series. It will be interesting to see what happens.
@mphdevelopment183
@mphdevelopment183 3 года назад
I was just thinking the exact same thing!! The Cthaeh is the one thing in the story that can manipulate time. The Cthaeh can interact with people/Fae to influence them but can't lie. It however can manipulate. If the Cthaeh told stories of Taborlin the Great, while knowing that by telling the story, it's creating a sort of self originated prophecy, the Cthaeh would not be lying and just creating a preordained destiny type situation of Kvothe becoming Taborlin through it's foresight. Patrick Rothfuss told us from the beginning that this story is about stories and how they progress/change over time The Cthaeh might be the origin of a lot of folklore that influences the world, not out of malice, but just as being a being that has foresight. I hope Rothfuss doesn't delve into the complexities of space time, even in the fantasy world setting, unless he sets some clear limits in his fantasy universe. Time is a tough one to mess with though so Hopefully I'm wrong.

Yeah...Pat said something along the lines of all the stories are one and the same. My main issue with that statement was how the hell kvothe could be taborlin. This theory makes it possible without getting all timey wimey and I like it.
@mjfranolich3681
@mjfranolich3681 4 года назад
Taborlin also sounds a lot like Elodin. Elodin was also locked up in a high structure that was thought to be unescapable, but by calling the name of stone and wind he made his escape. He works on a council with 7 other people (7 Chandrian) and at one point in the book the Chancellor, as he is speaking, mentions 7 councillors, before correcting himself and saying 8. There's also the fact that Lorren called Kvothe into his office to question him about his curiosity in the Amyr and Chandrian when he saw his entry, using the excuse that he noticed it while helping a new worker attend his duties. Curious he didn't give a name for that worker. Even more curious that he would go out of his way to have a discussion with Kvothe about that when he is notoriously distant. I found his excuse that he wanted to protect Kvothe from the impression of boyish fancy to be paltry. Stick with me. Let's assume Denna's version of events is true. Selitos is the monster, and Haliax is the tragic hero. I saw a fan theory that the Chandrian would then be working to defeat the Cthaeh, the greatest evil. It would explain why the Cthaeh set Kvothe against them, why he spent so much of their sparse time together taunting Kvothe about the manner of his parents death. Let's say the Chandrian are in fact working towards the greater good, and are erasing any evidence of their true names so that the Cthaeh doesn't get power over them. If they wished to defeat it, that is a brutal but necessary task. Now let's say they need a cover for the mortal world. What better way to devise a cover than build a University with an expansive library where they can directly control the information in books, AND monitor what others are reading into? This would also explain why there have been so many attempted changes in the library's organizational system, even though every change only serves the purpose of making things more confused. They want things to be disorganized and hard to find. It gives them another layer of protection. Of course I just finished both books for the first time, so this is very much a working theory! Just struck me that the parallels between Taborlin and Elodin are very apparent!
@Taitenger
@Taitenger 4 года назад
Also, to your point about brutal but necessary work, I thought of the autopsy guy (I forget his name at the moment) who did terrible things, but advanced human medicine. Kvothe and friends even have a philosophical debate about the merits of such an approach. Seems like a very Pat like allegory to prep us for the truth of the Chandrian. But really, I think it’s far more likely the Amir are the brutal but justice keepers. Or one in the same with the Chandrian.
@MrF33h
@MrF33h 3 года назад
That's interesting, but what about the Chandrian signs of their presence, like the blue flames? Could the council hide somehow their on powers or the signs would only show if they wanted to?
@randymiles7023
@randymiles7023 3 года назад
Perhaps the signs of the Chandrian are used to distract, and hide their true identity: when they can disappear easily, they display the signs. When they are living incognito lives (at the University) they keep choose not to display the signs.

I watched this video back to back with the theory where Kvothe becomes the new seventh Chandrian and seals his name away so he can't be used for evil. I really like the merging of these two theories and how it nicely parallels Denna and Kvothes conflicting Ideas about Lanre. Denna sees Lanre as a hero, but he's actually a Chandrian. Kvothe sees Taborlin as a hero, but Taborlin (a cryptic prophesy about Kvothe) ultimately becomes a Chandrian himself. That would be a pretty cool parallel.

At one point Felurian is telling Kvothe about the Fey Realm and says "That way is morning and that way is night" (or something like that, its been a while since I read the books). That made me think you could travel through time in the Fey Realm. So Kvothe could travel back in time and become Taborlin.

I think that, thematically, it makes more sense for taborlin to have not existed. Taborlin is representative of the "ideal hero" so when kvothe's journey mirrors that of taborlin, it is him becoming a hero, and when he inevitably falls, it will be in contrast to taborlin. The kingkiller chronicles is a story of stories, so this makes sense. The story of taborlin being a prophecy is an interesting theory, and I don't think it will be contradicted on canon, but nor do I think it will be confirmed. But most of the signs of taborlin seem quite generic to me. The cloak of no particular colour, so it could be any cloak, and the sword are staples of adventuring, naming is just the highest power in the world that we are presented, and the key coin and candle represent the mundane, while also having the motif of things occurring in threes that we see in other elements of the story. He appears to be the hero that can take on anyone's story. The only distinct feature is a copper sword, which is unusual given the power given to iron in the world. Great video.

However, Elodin SOUNDS like Taborlin and he does break the wall of the rookery. So... who knows? But, great video!! I love this theory.- I replied before the video was over. Solid theory on Selitos being the originator of the Taborlin stories in the form of prophecy. I like that. I agree with a lot of what you said. I also think that Taborlin is sort of a patchwork story, taking on pieces from other great heroes and blending into his own. So Taborlin escaping the tower may just be Eldodin, but escaping underground may be Kvothe, for example. I think the coin, key, and candle, are super relevant. I actually have a small theory that the coin has a power to change other coins in Kvothe’s purse to be exactly what he needs at the time he needs it. I feel like after he gets it there are a couple of times where he’s like “I don’t remember where I’d gotten that coin, but I was lucky to have it...” something like that. I look forward to more stuff.

Late to the party, but I just thought of something when it comes to Taborlin's "cloak of no particular color". Could it be that since Kvothe has a different cloak for every journey in his life: his childhood cloak, His patched cloak in Tarbean, His cloak he sacrifices to save Fela, Fela's gifted cloak (green), the Maer's cloak (Red), His mercenary cloak (Worn-out), and his Shaed cloak. Imagine the different people and story tellers telling his stories, only to have somebody contradict the color of his cloak from his other exploits, so to save time and avoid arguments they just say "A Cloak of "no particular" color". I thought it would be an interesting way to explain why it isn't any particular color. It's also weird that Patrick Rothfuss would use that precise wording, seeing how much of a perfectionist he is in words and names. Because if it was any form of color, it'd be easy to describe as they've described all of his cloaks and everyone's so descriptly throughout the books. But because there are potentially contradicting colors, or that the color could change, it's then a cloak of no particular color.

There are several theories about what lies behind the doors of stone in the archives. It may just be plain knowledge, but doors of stone have been used as metaphors for death. Lyra apparently had the power to open and close these doors, bringing Lanre back from the dead, and closing them again so he could not die. Metaphorically, of course. Maybe Taborlin breaking free of the room of smooth stone relates to Kvothe opening the Doors of Stone, i.e. conquering death in some way, or opening the locked box in his room.

I have thought along these lines for a while now, I am in the "Kvothe is Taborlin" school of thought. For me the greatest clue is how his items seem to be the same as Taborlin's. Kvothe's cloak is obviously his shaed cloak, the sword is obviously his sword and the gram is the amulet, the candle is his sympathy lamp and his lockpicks for the key but my theory has no equivalent for the staff. Didn't realise Auri gave him those things it is something new to think on. Great theory!

I think Taborlin is a tool for contrast. The chronicle is much about the true story behind legends and the contrast between hearing a story and being the main character of the story. Probably we will learn more about it sometime in the far future of book 3, but I think the story has a true background but not just one but multiple stories mashed up into one with much fiction on the top.

I really liked this theory. I don't necessarily agree that Taborlin is a prophecy, but I can see it as a possibility. I really liked your point that if there is the Cthae, there might also be a counter part to it. I think that could be a great way to counter balance the "evil" doings of the Cthae. Some people meet the Cthae, some the counter part, some both and some neither. In total it should lead to a balance. Kvothe story might be out of balance, because he personally met the Cthae, leading to a drama in his life. But the world is still in balance. We will only see once the third book is out, although some of these questions sure will remain unanswered or up to speculation. :)

I have a thought for ya. Does anyone other than myself harbor the suspicion that Kvothe is incapable of dying? Honestly it seems like he should’ve died like ten times over by now but every time he goes beyond the doors of stone he returns stronger than before. Sure he probably can die like anyone else but I don’t think he’s capable of staying dead if you catch my drift

This isn't particularly a part of this theory but this particular line struck me on my latest of many rereads. It's a line from Chronicler. "So this is the difference between hearing a story and being in one, the fear" I'm paraphrasing ofc, but I feel this line implies the story is very much still ongoing. Wether the interludes in day 3 will progress the story moreso than Day 1 & 2, or what I'm very much hoping for, there will be more books. I very much hope the story will progress beyond the past exploits of Kvothe.

I think the parallel between these characters illustrates the difference between reality and legend. The most amazing stories about Kvothe are exaggerated or made up as he says himself. I think Tarborlin might be a reminder to the reader that stories can sometimes be just stories. We're told Kvothe has killed angels and demons and assume he will assume godlike powers in the final day of the story. Maybe in fact there is a more mundane explanation for his supposed feats.

Incredible video. Not sure I like the idea of Taborlin being a mirror of Kvothe. The Taborlin in Kvothe is merely the arcane aspect. Taborlin is a namer, not an arcanist, and definitely not a musician. Meanwhile the foil to Taborlin in the books is Illien, the legendary trouper. These are merely the stories Kvothe draws from to shape himself, I doubt there's any other direct connection between them.

An interesting theory, but I have two problems with it: 1. Kvothe's story is a tragedy. We see the Cteah in the cover of the first book, which Bast tells us is used as a sign of tragedy in Fae plays. Furthermore, we already know the ending of the story, and Kvothe has said that his story ends in tragedy. Why would Selitos try to lead the world to destruction? It may be that it is one of those "a step backwards to go forwards" situations, but that leads into my next point. 2. Why would the Cteah lead Kvothe further down this path? If Selitos was trying to guide Kvothe, he would guide him as far away from the Cteah as possible for this reason. One solution to this problem is that Selitos is, in fact, the Cteah and was only later bound to the tree, but there are other problems with this. However, Denna's version of the tale of Lanre does point in this direction.

The cloak is “the cloak of elven kind”, but to Roth the idea of writing his own cloak of e.k. Is trite while also a right of writers and his several explanations of others’ cloaks is example of this alliteration, repetition legitimizes, repetition legitimizes, repetition legitimizes. It is my bet that ol’ Rothy likes Duke Ellington strictly because it’s all he learned in 9th grade jazz class. Happy 4/20 nerds

I have a theory, people started to análise and suppose many different theories from the books, pat started to read them, realized that some of them were better than his actual story and suddenly got really insecure about everything, and kept reading and listening and getting more and more incapable of beating the creativity he was seeing around, the only solution was to delay the book indefinitely till the day it was almost forgotten, then he could free himself from any expectatives of all the combined theories. The year is 2050 the book is finely released, most of the teens that read back thenare now grandpa's.
