The Knight of Faith: Do You Have What it Takes? | Soren Kierkegaard

Kierkegaard discusses his concept of the Knight of Faith in his work, Fear and Trembling. In it, faith is not just something you immediately stumble upon, but rather, it is arrived at through a series of necessary movements.
To be a true knight of faith, one must first become a knight of resignation. At this stage, one renounces the finite material world to concentrate on the spiritual and the infinite. At this stage, one might find solace from all the hardships of the physical world by escaping into the spiritual.
But after making the movement to become a knight of resignation, the knight can move to become a knight of faith. To be a knight of faith is to believe in the impossible becoming possible even in this physical world, as all things are possible under God. The knight of faith thus finds joy and contentment in life based on the strength of the absurd.

I'm getting baptized at the same time this video comes out. (June 2nd 11am into Anglicanism) Kierkegaard had a profound impact on my view of faith. I'm going to read "Fear and Trembling" soon, as I watched videos about Kierkegaard and decided to read his book. I read most of "Either/Or" and "Fear and Trembling" is next. I really enjoy your videos, particularly your videos Ecclesiastes and on Either/Or. These videos and others like them helped me grow into a sort of Christian existentialist thank you for this content PhilosophyToons.

Great video. The knight of faith is one of my favourite concepts in philosophy. The knights of faith walk among us but one detects nothing special in their outward appearance, and yet at every step he performs the movement of infinity. By first renouncing everything, one paradoxically gains everything. "It is said that the dancer's hardest task is to leap straight into a definite position, so that not for a second does he have to catch at the position but stands there in it in the leap itself. Perhaps no dancer can do it - but the knight does it. The mass of humans live disheartened lives of earthly sorrow and joy, these are the sitters -out who will not join in the dance. The knights of infinity are dancers too and they have elevation. They make the upward movement and fall down again, and this too is no unhappy pastime, nor ungracious to behold. But when they come down they cannot assume the position straightaway, they waver an instant and the wavering shows they are nevertheless strangers in the world... But to be able to land in just that way, and in the same second to look as though one was up and walking, to transform the leap of life to a gait, to express the sublime in the pedestrian absolutely - that is something only the knight of faith can do - and it is the one and only marvel." I like to compare this double movement Kierkegaard writes of as going from the material to the spiritual and back again to the material, thus it is not an escape from the world but an enrichment of it, by imbuing it with cosmic and spiritual significance. "As above, so below." "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven"

Two fun things: 1) There is an interesting correlation between Kierkegaard’s Knight of Faith and the place of javanmardi (Farsi) / futuwwa (Arabic) (both translate to something like “chivalry”) in the love mysticism of Sufism. There’s even an understanding of a kind of resigned surrender into fana (annihilation) that leads to a rebirth in baqa (subsistence) out of love for tue beloved. 2) In Philosophy as Metanoetics, Tanabe Hajime, following a similar dynamic by way of the concepts of oso (movement toward the spiritual ultimate) and genso (return to the world in service) from Shin Buddhism, tracks closely to Kierkegaard. But also takes him to task for not totally surrendering to “Other-power” in genso, and thus failing to embrace ordinary life. In Tanabe’s view, to over-simplify it a bit, Kierkegaard cannot quite let go of a kind of egoic self-assertion in resignation, and so holds too dearly to a kind of self-centered moralism that is often an issue for folks who conceive of the ultimate in terms of “being,” and thus can subtly write their own ego-self and its desires onto the ultimate. Instead, he argues, the ultimate needs to be conceived as “absolute nothingness,” not in the sense of a relative nothingness counterposed to relative being, but a nothingness as no-thingness, Reality as non-objectifiable, infinite, dynamic, etc., and thus always escaping from our attempts to reify it, separate it from our every day life, or make it self-identical to our everyday life (or anything in between). It is only conceiving of the ultimate in such a way, he argues, that our egos can be crushed by practice of metanoesis in surrender to “Other-power,” and so, following Kierkegaard, become a Knight of Faith (bodhisattva in Buddhism, javanmard / fata in Sufism) truly able to serve the needs of the world.

Is it possible to have an "ego-death" without going crazy? On a separate note, I was reading about how some people think you "chose" this life in a pre-existent existence and that the goal in life is to fulfill that reason.

Its pretty hard to become the knight of faith but in a way in some point of life we are pretty near to hold it at least for a few moments and understand it by ourselves in a way (i dont know im just saying) and yes my english is bad 😂

I didn't know there was such a thing until I saw your video, but I'm pretty sure that I'm a knight of infinite resignation. I've developed a healthy love for the absurd and life is okay though, so who knows? Maybe I'll become a knight of infinite faith? In what, I don't know, 🤪

Faith is wanting to or pretending to believe.

Faith is making the choice to believe. We as a culture ironically undersell the importance of choice and individual agency, for all we tout the importance of individualism.

Why the background distraction music? It makes it 2wice as hard to follow. Stupid habit people copied from inexperienced people. Please stop playing background music to teaching videos or I will unsubscribe.
