The Krasny Kavkaz represents the best and worst of the Soviet Navy, but how did the ship perform so well given her shaky start? Let's have a look at a Soviet warship that should be part of the comedy of errors alongisde the Second Pacific Squadron but performed very well.

Loosing one propeller and having the second one damaged, with 2000 tons of water in an already overweight 9000 ton ship and somehow staying afloat and making it back to port is seriously impressive. That must have been some extremely skilled damage control crews. That's the kind of survival story you would hear about the US Navy in the Pacific, not the Soviet Navy in the Black Sea. I completely agree with what you said. Not a good ship by design, but she performed really well for what she was asked to do. (PS, love that you mentioned the Georgios Averof. I visited her a few years ago and she's such a pretty ship with an amazing career.)

They kind of had a thing with that. The original design for the 130mm destroyer gun had very impressive velocity, but the barrel was gone after 140 rounds. They carried something like 200 rounds/gun, so the barrel would be shot out before they ran out of ammunition. In this case they dialed it back a bit, and ended up with a very good gun. Not dual-purpose like the American 5”/38, a serious flaw with aircraft being something of a menace, but still a very good gun.

The Leander's are one of my favourite class of ships ever built never the biggest or best but just an absolutely solid little well built work horse that any serious navy needs to cover all the important work so it's bigger siblings can focus on the enemy. With enough speed range and fire power to go everywhere it might be needed and look after itself with little to no support while being cheap enough to be built in useful numbers yet also being good enough provide support in the battle fleet. During the war they outshone everything else racking up win after win both in fleet combat and solo actions because the were everywhere. They then went on to form the foundation for independent commonwealth fleets having long useful career's as both frontline ships and training vessels giving those young Navy's a good head start on becoming serious players on the word stage surpassing many small established fleets right out the gate.

For those who struggle with the Soviet/Russian nomenclature. The Soviet Union _was_ a Sovereign state comprising fifteen national entities. While Russia was vastly the most populous, and dominated the USSR politically, Russia was not at all the same entity, even though most Russians falsely or erroneously said it was. An interesting parallel is the UK. The UK is a Sovereign state comprising four national entities. While England is vastly the most populous, and dominates the UK politically, England and the UK are not at all the same entity, even though many falsely or erroneously say it is.
@fridrekr7510
@fridrekr7510 4 месяца назад
I assume the use of Russian instead of Soviet merely comes from seeing the Soviet Union as a continuation of Russian imperialism. The Russian Empire also consisted of numerous nationalities, yet everyone collectively calls them Russians, and the same is the case for the German Empire etc. The UK might be a slightly special case since we're using English terminology here, but the whole UK population is also commonly referred to as English in other languages.
@ax.f-1256
@ax.f-1256 3 месяца назад
That's probably because most area of the USSR were literally exactly the same areas that were part of old Imperial Russia. So Ukraine was brutally forced into being part of the Russian Empire, then brought back again as Ukrainian SSR into the Soviet Union when they tried to break free again and right now Russia is once again trying to invade them. And Russia was also granted all rights and benefits like the seat in the UN security council the USSR once had. And the capital was and is Moscow. So of course most would assume that Russia and the Soviet Union are one and the same. While in reality they never were. It was always Russia + neighboring countries that were brutally colonized and forced under Moscow rule against their will.
@WardenWolf

I mean: In fairness to the soviet navy, the idea, at least, made sense. Make do with what you have while you try to spin up actual naval manufacturing infrastructure. Considering the likely opponents in the Black Sea, up-gunning the ship made some sense as well: really the only ship that could've outgunned her was the old Yavuz Sultan Selim (ex-SMS Goeben), but if she came up against that, she actually had the slight speed advantage, and in any event you can just run to Parizskaya Kommuna at that point. And she definitely outgunned anything the Turks other than Yavuz. That doesn't make the thing a good design...I mean, far from it. However, it does make it a good design, *for what they had to work with.* I think that's the biggest takeaway here: when your country had been blown up, imploded, and turned inside out, and you not only want but NEED to re-arm, you make do with what you have until you get something better. If anything, Kavaz gets more of a pass then the damn Kirovs, that's for sure.

The Royal Navy stopped making heavy cruisers before WW 2 to concentrate on light cruisers as they could make more of them (note - they were inferior to USN light cruisers built in the same time period and absolutely no match for USN heavy cruisers). I have a soft spot for this ship as well. Yeah, it was a jury rigged mess, but there was something cool about, though I am not quite sure what!

I don't like the stereotypes, usualy bad generalizations, bu this seems the usual Russian way of trying to have a better naval force with smaller and fewer ships that the big powers: put a lot of firepower in it...only that. At least on paper it's very powerful.

Suggestion: When you mention stats of ships, especially comparisons, show a data table of the ships. Would make it much more easy to follow the comparison.

It's easy to knock Soviet warships of the interwar years as being inferior to other nations of the time but one has to bear in mind that, at that time, the Soviet Union was a nation surrounded by hostile or potentially hostile nations, including Britain and the United States, and was handicapped by economic embargoes imposed by most of those nations. The Soviets famously acquired J. Walter Christie's tank suspension design, which was later applied to the famous T-34 tank, by having a couple of examples of them shipped out of the country falsely labeled as "farm tractors" and without any gun turrets on them. In addition, the Soviet government was far more interested in building up the Red Army than the Navy. That was partly because the Soviet leadership viewed the nation as far more likely to become engaged in a land war than a naval war. However, it was also because the Navy had become politically untrustworthy as the result of an anti-Bolshevik mutiny committed by some of the Navy's personnel stationed at Kronstadt during 1921. As a result of those factors, during the 1930s one sees the Soviet Union developing and manufacturing large numbers of tanks, but virtual stagnation in the Navy. Thus, the Soviet Navy leadership was placed in the position of having to make due with whatever it had available, which consisted largely of attempting to update WW-I or pre-WW-I era vessels of questionable value. An attempt finally was made to develop new battleships, cruisers and destroyers during the late 1930s, but that effort was initiated too late to have much effect on the Soviet Navy during WW-II.

Good upload, thank you !! I have several 1:700th scale WWII Soviet model warships in my stash.... 1.TASHKIENT 2. CHERVONA UKRAINA 3. PARIZKAYA COMMUNNA Unique looking vessels, aesthetics-wise.... That's all I can say, as they were never of true significance, mainly bombardment duties across the board- possibly difference makers in that regard- a few miles off shores that needed support for troops inland.... If they were ever worth a damn, so it seems ? The reds would have employed them to help the Republican forces in Spain- which they did not. Why not ? The impetus was there, as Germany & Italy were helping Spanish Nationalist forces, via "non-intervention"?... Maybe it was better the Soviets kept away, where their own crap warships could float another day & look cool doing it !?! Lol 🚬😎👍

The Soviet Navy really was a thing to behold. It's up there with the Kriegsmarine and the IJN, at the peak of the competency roller-coaster. It's like rolling a d20 on a Warhammer Ork play: it's either going to be an extraordinary tale of innovation and technical success (see: hydrofoils, ekranoplans, Shkval torpedoes) or a comically atrocious shitshow (see: sailing from the Baltic to the Sea of Japan and getting absolutely SMOKED by the Japanese Navy, building a cursed aircraft carrier, losing your flagship sub due to insisting on loading shitty torpedoes in it)

Russia has never been a competent naval power, but they certainly have come up with interesting ship designs over the years. Often they're *bad* designs, but still interesting.
