The Kulture Study: ONEWE 'Universe_' MV REACTION & REVIEW 

OMG I was not expecting this!!! It means so much that you are keeping up with ONEWE. I KNEW you would love the music video and its storytelling. It has been a long time since the MV and song seemed inseparable, and after watching the song with the MV, I could never separate the two again. The MV was like an instrument within the song itself and gave the song an extra dimension. I suppose this is what MVs are supposed to do, but it is rare to see and I'm so happy to see ONEWE do it perfectly. So basically everything you said!

I can't fucking handle this song. They always hit. Yonghoon truly is one of the best vocalists in this industry and they made a song here that I think everyone can relate to on a deeply emotional level. It's so multifaceted in the way it describes your loved ones.

Fun fact, Yonghoon began writing the lyrics after questioning the universe. But he thought it was impossible to represent him that if he had to imagine it, it would be with an image/metaphor. That in the end, we were all the universe, just as complex. The universe is him, it’s me and the others. This is also why the MV revolves around the love of a couple, a friendship, family and an animal. The universe is a journey towards others. And as you said so well PD, the MV transcribes to perfection this concept... So artistic and so beautiful...

Yonghoon's poetry seems to transcend the language barrier. This video really got me in my feels (first time through w/o lyrics) it was so well done. Musically this was so beautiful.

Honestly onewe's releases have always been amazing but I feel like they don't get a lot of attention. I think only Q was the one which really got popular bcoz of them featuring hwasa. But they deserved so much more and I feel like this comeback is finally getting them that appreciation they deserved. And I'm glad that you've been keeping up with them as well:)

One of the best voices in Kpop. The fact that the music video conveyed more that just romantic love. Them playing with families and dogs and whatnot, anything can be your universe

Onewe also recently released a single called Star that also has an MV, would love to see your reaction to that as well!

The way Younghun says ( Should we go far away? Should we go further? ) it feels like he asking himself and the person he loves if they should take risks together? If they had to stay together even to the farthest place in the universe without knowing what they will even face? I don't know how to describe it but I feel like he really explains the meaning of (love) for many people ”love can be for with another person - your mother - or a family member - or even your pet”.. This kind of emotions has been described really pure and clear in the song - also when they says ( everything about you became my universe) they basically says “you are my everything literally” // It was as if describing love and willingness to sacrifice with the stars and universe.. so I felt that the song was really special and gave me a lot of sympathy:)

I watched the MV twice, once without subs then with…second time around I had tears and didn’t even realise. I’ve listened to the entire album 3 times completely all the way through…Onewe are officially my favourite band, they are amazing

I never thought any Onewe song would ever even challenge Parting, and then Universe_ happened. I always listen to songs without lyrics for the first time so I can feel the music more deeply, and even before the lyrics I was on the verge of tears. The way the song swells, blossoms when it mentions the faraway star... I adore all of Onewe's space-and-celestial-themed songs, that's why I fell in love with them in the first place, but no other one has stretched its fingers to the distance quite like this. This particular part, "What if we fall on a faraway star" - it struck me before the lyrics, and after I read them it just rang in silver clarity. And the very end, with the sound of twinkling stars (I can't believe someone else also pictures it like that!) and the flurry of music and the beautiful high notes... It's like a perfect, swirling chaos of a galaxy, and I am so, so in love with it. They really outdid themselves with this song 💙

I’ve been a fan of Onewe since there first release under Mas 0094, nearly 7 years at this point I think. This song reminds me so much of my high school years I had listening to them and bringing me together with one of my closest friends. Sadly, she passed away early last year completely unexpectedly. Listening to this song paired with the music video reminds me so much of why I love Onewe and the message their music brings to people, the stories they tell. And everything about it somehow still makes me feel connected to my friend. Perhaps it’s because Onewe first and foremost to me will always feel like a group of friends who wanted to make music and continued to pursue it.

I was just wondering earlier if you would react to Universe! 😭 I was kinda worried that you wouldn't, because it's not really a "K-Pop" song. Star and Universe are my favorite ONEWE songs right now; they are just so good, and Yonghoon's vocals on them, especially Star, are just incredible.

Thank you, PD for expressing in words what we all felt after watching and listening to this song. I honestly had waterfalls for almost the entire MV. It's not even a SAD song. But the magnitude of feeling it evoked from me is so big that I can't contain it. 😭

This is one of these times that I am so glad that RBW gave the opportunity for ONEWE to have an actual MV instead of just a garage band shot like others. It's not that I didn't like Rain To Be (I find it one of the most cathartic experiences I ever had) but that they aren't just musicist but actual storytellers in their works. I'd risk to say that listening to Universe_ is just a fraction of how good the rest of the album is, because following it in order and reading the lyrics along made me literally tear up, and after experiencing the whole album going back to the MV again made it all come together as honestly the best comeback ONEWE has ever made. I'm suspicious as I'm a hardcore fan but the sensibility and maturity they achieved with their lyrics and melodies since Memory:Illusion is so beautiful that I'm sad for all those that are missing the experience to follow their career. Planet Nine is definitely an ambitious series and I'm so glad that they're following the universe theme throughout their work. Another thing I love about it is that you can see how much they actually reflect and understand about the topic. Universe_ was a part of many of Yonghoon's reflections over the topic of space and the universe, and to know that it's a topic that ressonates with all of the members makes it even more special. Hyungu has shared with us that he is a huge fan of Carl Sagan and that Cosmos is one of his favorite works (which even named one of the songs last album), along with many other astrophysics works he has mentioned in his lives. Seeing how they expanded in the idea of Regulus, progressing to Parting (which I agree is the most impactful title from them) and then both the Planet Nine albuns - and how they are the actual producers of all these songs, this comeback made fully by them with a little help of their seniors, but fully idealized by them... I'm just so proud of them. Also, I know we didn't discuss the actual storyline of the MV and just the semiotics, but it reminds me so much of this quote from John Scalzi's (a sci-fi novelist, which fits the universe theme of this discussion) Old Man's War - "Part of what makes us human is what we mean to other people, and what people mean to us." It's about the mark all those people (and the dog!) left on their lives and seeing how the memory of them is just as much a part of you as yourself. The way the MV fits perfectly with all the lyrics - they just hit the nail with this one. I'll probably be thinking about this until the end of this year. And after we lost so many people due to COVID-19, it makes the song and the meaning of this video even more special.

honestly i ALWAYS cry in the last chorus of onewe's songs but this one had me in tears before the first chorus even hit lol. this mv really does feel absolutely emotional and special, with the concept of universe being delivered in such a touching and intimate way, just wow thanks for the reaction PD, loved your analysis, i think you put the feelings into words amazingly and it makes me appreciate the mv even more :)

Tell me why onewe’s recent releases just make me wanna cry in the best way. They’re all so beautiful. Onewe never fails to amaze me. Everything is so amazing. Yonghoon is such an excellent songwriter. They all are.

I would love to see Onewe getting their songs to reach all of the industry, because hearing this and their other masterpieces is something that anyone shluld have the right to. I can't put it to words how beautiful and how this song makes me feel, and I would love to more people to have this experience too, but unfortunately there's a big stigma against K-Rock bands, that is making it impossible. And as you pointed, the MV goes so well and really complements the song, like a MV is supposed to do, you really can't separate these 2! I was absolutely moved by this song when I watched the MV this morning. The imagery with the family members and the dog was part of it, but an even bigger part is how Yonghoon sings. He has a true and soul-deep gift. His voice reaches into me and squeezes my heart and causes me to choke up in the very best way. It's just perfection. This is the second time in a week that one of my two favorite K-bands has delivered a song and MV that has nearly moved me to tears, the other being The Rose with "Beauty and the Beast."

This song broke my soul and I cried so much.. Kanghyun and his guitar solo made me cry even harder. I haven’t done that with a song in so long. They outdid themselves yet again. So proud of them. And the fact that Yonghoon did the lyrics, composed and the arrangement (with Jeon Da Woon on the last two).. like wow. It’s my second comeback with them and I’m beyond blown away! This song just hit me so hard. From their vocals, the music, and the MV? It was beautifully done 🤟🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤟🏼 thank you!!!!

ohh this is so gorgeous ! My favourite little thing was that when they were playing as a band they were wearing these suits instead of anything more casual because it highlights the difference between them as characters in casual, youthful clothes and them as a band. If that makes sense? Not the first time its been done but I've never seen onewe in such formal clothes so it stood out to me. Also the suits just were beautiful

When the mv teaser is out, my first thought was: why would they used such a wide lens that even made the members look distorted. But after listening to your explanation, it kinda understand. Also, when the full mv is out, truthfully I felt like this mv is on lower budget one because they only shot at 2 locations (I believe the house is some kind of vacation house that's often rented for K-variety shows 🤣). But then again, you're right. I guess they want to create a much more emotional & moving mv for Universe_ and Novv managed to bring it out. Anyway, thank you PD for your review. Honestly I truly adore and respect all of your reviews! You are so so right. Only if you know a language, you can fully experience the ultimate feeling that a song wants to give. Park Hyo Shin, So Hyang and Onewe where the reason that I am learning Korean. Onewe here did an epic song which if you see it with the phenomenal MV, it stays with you forever. After listening carefully all of their new album, these boys knows how to make unique art and not just songs.
