Saw them in 1989...I honestly thought I was witnessing the future of rock n roll. I was astounded by this band, I bought all the singles (apart from the first, "Way Out" which for some reason was impossible to find in Belfast) and the eponymous 1st. album...then it was all over. Such a loss. Lee Cavers was/is a major talent that for whatever reason faded as quickly as he flourished. Forget The Stone Roses and Oasis, this was my band for a brief moment in my youth.
They look so surreal playing at the 9:39 Club. A British Import never looked cooler, I can tell you that. Incredible footage. Thanks for the upload. ☕🌨️⭐🎉
@@Tito-en5nv Not sure if he's left handed, but he's playing a right-handed kit -- just with an open-handed technique, meaning he's using his left hand on the hi-hats and right hand on the snare instead of the "traditional" method of crossing over to the hats with the right hand and hitting the snare with the left. There weren't many people playing that way 30+ years ago, but it has caught on a bit more in recent years. Advantages to this style include making certain types of fills easier/more fluid, and allowing more space to get power behind your snare hits. Not a ton of disadvantages, other than the fact open-handed players usually have their hi-hats lower -- which can make it a little harder to keep the hi-hats from bleeding into the snare mic.
@@larrydanadavid2435If they’d have made it too big, they’d have inevitably been pressured to bring out more and more and the quality would have dipped and their mystique extinguished. The only band to avoid that is the Beatles who got better as they went on. The La’s are special because they’re the underdogs.
Love you posted this, but why is JP on bass barely in it? He was a friend of my cousin. When they came to toronto my brother and I went early to lee’s palace for the sound check. We took a case of beer and hung out on the tour bus before and after the show, and then back at their hotel. A friend with us gave Lee an Ontario Brewers’ Retail shirt that he was wearing as he came straight from work. Have seen pictures of Lee in that shirt from later shows. Sound lads all of them. I’m a doctor, just a resident back then. John had a wrist tendinitis that I helped him with. A couple of years later he came back with Cast. Recognized me at the sound check as ‘dale’s cousin who fixed his wrist and put me on the guest list. Took the drummer of cast, another friend of my cousin (I’m from the Liverpool area originally - out drinking - and for dinner -before the show). Another great night. The La’s were a special band for sure. And just great grounded northern lads too.
@@jimmycohrssen Hot damn! Music was so good back then! Especially in the Athens GA to NYC corridor. We had no idea how lucky we were. I went to UVa in late 80's. REM played C'ville 4 years running. Dave Mathews was the local band. And that was just for starters. Crazy to think about. Nostalgia.....
@@jimmycohrssen ..would love to know where the videos are that they took at every show...you always knew when the gig was going to start when you saw the guy climbing up the perch to start filming.
@@monk1965 Sadly that's a myth. It was live feed only. To actually make a video like this we had to get the band's permission, use our own $75 tapes. It was a rare occurance.
@@jimmycohrssen ..I get it...I still have the copy of "Remnants" you signed for me back in the Arlington Record store days..I was at the "Suddenly Tammy" show you put on there!!
Lee Mavers also scrapped the Mike Hedges version simply because his bandmates went on holiday without him. He even admits this in "In Search Of The La's." I think the truth is he didn't want fame and he knew that his talent would lead to it so he found any excuse to sabotage The La's chances.
@@tomben6180 yeah mate, I'll put the link below. Only thing is the original master tapes were stolen (the stealing of La's tapes is something that happened a number of times, I almost feel like Lee was behind it haha) so the mix is based off a rough cut kind of thing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dVmIZa-inqI.htmlsi=KtZDcPy502-c5yTu
@@tomben6180 no worries. Yeahh, he said in the Isle Of Noises interview that he doesn't want to be a star, I think he's just content going about his life which is fair. He's been back in the studio this year though which was cool to see.
No shame at all. If someone said to you that you could have put out an album as good as The La's and influence the world as much, would you not be happy with that?
@@stevemccourt9390it was a shame. They had the potential to be the best ever for me. That album is the fines album ever released. I feel sick sometimes knowing how much more could have been.
@@tomben6180 I don't think it's every band's destiny or duty to become the best ever and I would be very proud to have made an album that so many people regard it as the finest ever released and to know how much it inspires people. However, I understand that you would love to have heard more and you're entitled to feel that way.
