Many of us dream of a quiet life in the country, and for Jan Bush that dream became a reality… but the harsh realities of living off the grid gradually took their toll.
Living in an underground bunker in the Welsh countryside with her two dogs, she’s about as far from society as you can get. A peaceful life for sure but being away from local amenities meant her rubbish quickly piled up and got out of hand. In 10 years, Jan managed to burrow herself in layers of grime and filth so deep it has required a specialist team of extreme cleaners to dig her back out of her garbage grotto.
Watch in horror on what they unearth in this cold, windowless nightmare.

Oxy I don’t think she’s a hoarder or she wouldn’t part with anything. I think she has been off the radar of people who could help her. She simply slipped through the net, never asked for any help and everything began to overwhelm her. Once that had started, she would see no end in sight because it would be piling up faster than she was removing it. I imagine she’s been sleeping a lot in that little pickup she’s got and maybe using facilities in a service station or supermarket for her personal hygiene and somewhere to possibly get a warm drink and food. She obviously has an income or savings to live off. I just hope things have now moved onwards and upwards for her.

I can actually see myself moving to a WW2 bunker and befriending animals. Working retail in lockdown destroyed my faith in humanity. So much so I have myself gone into cleaning. My mum - who still works retail - thought it hilarious when I said I'd rather scrub a stranger's toilet than deal with customers.

Aw she left the spiders. I can relate lol. When I went to summer camp one year, I had to share a cabin with 3 other mean girls. I felt lonely and homesick. My only friend was a big fat spider that would set up its web every night in the window right beside my bunk. I found it oddly comforting despite being terrified of spiders.

i wouldn't call myself a hoarding expert, but i've seen a few episodes where people live like this. Usually its a mix of depression/hoarding. This is just a weird case where she acts really happy on camera but something more internal could be happening relating to her mental health. Its hard for me to call it lazy, but people with severe mental health issues can hahve a hard time cleaning, so that's why you'll see a lot of personal belongings mixed in with trash. They mean well, and a lot of the time they want to clean, but they put it off until its too late in severe cases it looks like. there seems to be two kinds of hoarders, ones that like buying and get attached, and other's that hoard something due to energy/other mental health reasons outside of OCD, but they don't really get emotionally attached

I don't have any sympathy for her. She is plainly put, a pig. Living half her life in a bunker and never cleaning up the mess until you have to call in someone with shovels to take care of your mess. How does that work, is she paying for the service? II hope so.

Linda Doggett I quite agree Linda! Even if she has mental health problems etc..I’m finding it very hard to have any empathy at all! I realise that there are so many folk who have this “hoarding problem “ which has recently had a lot more public interest....as having a long career as a Head Housekeeper in various Hotels,Residential Homes etc,you’d be amazed how quickly folk can trash their rooms in one day let alone a few nights! You’d be amazed at what I’ve had to clean up in my time....sometimes so bad I’ve had to “gear up” to face the filth left behind...it really is no fun at all especially when your admitted to hospital with a serious health issue yourself because of the bacteria you’ve picked up while cleaning up other people’s poop and garbage!

This is tragic! She looks in her 50s if not older, and I can’t believe she’s lived there for half her life! - she says she is 50! Plus - is it legal?? What does she do for a toilet? Hearing her talk about having farmyard animals living inside the bunker, the more certain I am that she has a mental health issue.

To live like that for so long should make a person stop and consider therapy. She said she thought she had friends?.....Maybe one look at her living conditions made them think twice. No way she lived there. Her dogs are too clean and cared for, and she is just too chipper watching these guys work. How did they find her in the first place. I’m sure it’s staged. Who owns the land? Does she? And just like that…she’s ready to “start a new chapter” in her life. Not buying it.
