When we just started out we trained a lot on lake Neusiedl near Austrias capital Vienna. The lake is quite big but only two meters deep. For my American friends, that's 6,5ft and that's just deep enough to sail but not by much. We often "found" something on the bottom, caught a fish or at least dragged an entire underwater jungle of seagrass behind us.
The shallow water means that there are barley any waves, or as Misha Heemskerk would say: "Surfing is a different sport." This means two things, the boat gets very fast and the gusts kick like a mule.
In this video you can see us at a level where we figured out the basics but still struggled with bearing away and standing position downwind. Anyway a week previous we won the biggest regatta in Austria the Hyundai Roundabout where we have beaten over 170 teams in absolute time. The key how we eventually left these issues behind us was good communication. We talked about literally everything. The moment you stop learning ist the day you stop sailing or so...
