I’ve read about this temple but to see it is great. Thnx. I’ve read the Hittites boasted they had a 1,000 gods including many “adopted” from those kingdoms they conquered. One king boasted in capturing a city and took the gods (statute-idols?) away. From reading about the decipherment of their language “Nešili” on the ubiquitous clay tablets the Hittites have provided clues about other Anatolian (nonIndo-European) languages like Hattian.

i would hazard that the reliefs were carved in over much older representations of these gods that were in the form of stick figures that in turn became occulted temple secrets. You find such figures in locations like this one scattered all over the Indo European historical ranges. I say that because there are approximately twelve types of these roughly human appearing mirror image self similar stick figures with varying sorts of appendages including one with a birds head and another grasping lightning in its "hands".

Hattusha was also the center for Hattians, which came before the Hitties who identified as descendants of the Hattians, as far as I know. Given the proximity to Hattusha, is this from the Hittites, or Hattians?
@Bramble451
@Bramble451 26 дней назад
Modern scholarship has, unfortunately, resulted in confusion about this. The Hittite capital city, Hattusa, was originally a Hattian city, "Hattus" or "Hatta". The Hittites called the language of the people there "hattili", which translates to "that of the city Hatti". In other words, what we today call "Hattic" is what the Hittites called "Hittite". As for their own language, the Hittites named it after the city Nesa (Kanesh), a city which they dominated and was very important in the preceding period because of its trade links with Assyria. So, to the Hittites, their own language was "Nesite". But, by the time scholars figured that out, they had already started calling the language of the Hittites "Hittite", and it stuck. In any event, after making Hattusa the capital of their kingdom, the Hittites called their kingdom "the Land of the City Hattusa". "Hatti" in the Akkadian language frequently used by the Hittites. So today we call the Hittite empire "Hatti".

@@MetastaticMaladies I think Dr Milano exaggerates his point. Many depicted deities are unknown but the major 12 and more certainly are known. Yazilikaya (as it's called today) was vastly rebuilt after the religious reforms of Puduhepa, mother and chief advisor to Tudhaliya IV. The Hittites suffered runaway god inflation by incorporating every deity they encountered into their pantheon (the famous 1000 gods of the Hatti). Puduhepa declared she had a revelation and restricted the number of major deities to gods mainly drawn from the Hurrians (her ancestors). There is plenty of excellent research literature on this topic.

@@gregorynixon2945 Huh. I read that the full pantheon of gods and the intricacies of their religious practices aren’t fully understood. Like some myths and rituals are difficult to interpret, so while we have a decent idea, it’s still not fully known. And there is little known about the daily lives of ordinary people, there’s a lot of info about kings and the elite, but very little is known about the common people. I could go on about other things I’ve read but it’ll get too long. It seems there’s still a lot of mysteries surrounding the Hittites that we haven’t discovered, and while I appreciate you trying to educate me, I think your exaggerating just how much we know, I’ve read several books on Hittites, I can’t remember if they are all Trevor or not, but we don’t know everything about them, and that’s the point of my post. I gotta get me one of those fedoras! Much better than my bucket hat! I still get overwhelmed with the time span, when I think about this being a few HUNDRED years, yet, BEFORE the 'bronze age collapse' and my understanding that the Hittites in particular were more or less "wiped out" by that chain of events. And I'm curious: I guess "wiped out" doesn't mean every one of them died suddenly. Rather, it literally means they stopped leaving monumental artifacts with a given continuous theme.. Monument construction would have required.... what? A king to organize the people and get their surpluses gathered into one pocket? What replaced monuments, as we became harder to control in recent decades? I'm thinking about how much surplus you need in order to invent "ownership" and "property rights" in the first place, for people less important than the king...?
@Bramble451
@Bramble451 26 дней назад
Actually, the number of monuments increases after the collapse of the empire. "Wiped out" just means that the upper echelons responsible for running the empire died or in some other way lost control of the imperial bureaucracy. The peasant class still remained, as it always did, and still does today. The empire represented the upper echelons, and so the empire collapsed when the lost control of it. But after the fall of the empire, there were still Hittite vassal kings who were descendents of rulers of the Hittite empire. These kings immediately declared themselves to be kings by right of succession. These are the "Neo-Hittite" states. This is when we get a ton of monuments made, with the Neo-Hittite kings making monuments to themselves. But no single king could consolidate all of them, and they were eventually conquered individually by the Assyrians. The fate of the capitol isn't known. Oddly, by the time of the collapse of the empire, the capitol had already been largely abandoned. After the fall, or as part of it, it looks like the "barbarian" Kaska tribes who lived along the Black Sea coast, and had always been a problem for the Hittites, moved south into the old Hittite homeland and even beyond, before being defeated by the Assyrians.

@@Bramble451Wow! Okay... So what do the archeology people mean when they say such-n-so city "was never occupied again"? I've always assumed the peasants just keep farming, but ancient cities are harder for me to imagine. I've been to Ephesus, but I don't have any idea how they got jobs or got paid, or if such concepts have any meaning for the ways people lived back then... For example, if we assume the stone masons couldn't read or write, then they must have had a lot of supervision to get glyphs carved so neatly into a monument. And for that matter, if nobody is literate, who is influenced by these documentary monoliths? Given the realities of ancient bathroom habits, I can't even imagine how they stopped by the grocery store on the way home. Or the 1077bc equivalent...?

@Bramble451
@Bramble451 26 дней назад
Gods having associated animals is widespread throughout Anatolia and the lands they influenced. Certain gods had animals that were traditionally associated with them, so there could very well be a connection. The image of a deity flanked by two animals is a very, very, very old tradition in Anatolia. On inscriptions, they are depicted as being on top of a single animal, but that's probably because they didn't know how to depict two animals side by side. In sculpture, the animals flank the deity and often serve as a throne.

I was hoping to hear you get into more details about how it was used as a calendar, per Zanger and Gautschy. But still cool to see.

It's a very exciting and interesting theory, although I don't know if it has found widespread acceptance.

the mitani spoke Hurrian which is unrelated to the Proto-Indo-European language family, However the Hatti a smaller kingdom that was absorbed by the Hittites and the actual culture that founded Hattuşa before being absorbed by the Hittite empire.

@@katmannsson The ruling elite of Mitanni display personal names and names of deities that suggest an Indo-European affiliation. But Hurrian itself, the language of the people over whom they ruled, was indeed non-Indo-European.

According to the Wikipedia page Indo-Aryan_superstrate_in_Mitanni, it mentions the treaty between the Hittites and Mitanni (between Suppiluliuma I and Shattiwaza, c. 1380 BC), the deities Mitra, Varuna, Indra, and Nasatya (Ashvins) are invoked. Source cited on Wikipedia: Fournet, Arnaud (2010). "About the Mitanni Aryan gods". Journal of Indo-European Studies. 38 (1-2): 26-40.

Ah. Still preferring van kerkwycks narratives. Theyre just more interesting. And more charismatically told. Isnt that, what counts in a postfactual age? 😄 Who still gives a fuck about reason and proper methodology? 😮‍💨

So the 12 can represent 12 tribes maybe this were writing about the 12 tribes of Israel that God would have chosen as their people. This 12 tribes are important because acording to the bible they are the ones who will be awaken once jesus comes back again to fight the devil. Everything else is speculation abd talking about something you guys dont know is ridiculous i rather try to link this writing to God there is only 1 God the on in the Bible

Can we see the writing that says those are gods depicted?

For most of them, yes.

The twelve Hittite gods was their representation of the Zodiac. Each is pictured with a series of dots (recently translated) that depicts the position on the geocentric planar ecliptical. These are extremely accurate - Nielson et al (2003) demonstrated the accuracy is to within .05 degree. These correspond directly to the famous quote by Ahura Mazda which predicts the 12,000 disaster cycle and speaks directly to the Dzhanibekov Oscillations which have caused massive die-offs in the distant past. You can also find this in the Vedas. They are warning future generations to prepare as no one will be spared.
