Just because I saw how you weren't quite sure how the poundage for bows works: The pounds of the bow (usually written on the lower limb) describe the draw strength of the bow at 28 inches draw length. (From pivot point to your fingers) For kids it can be 24 inches or less. Depends on what age group the bow is made for. The potential energy stored in the bow is the integral of the strength of the bow over the draw length. Depending on the type of the bow more or less energy can be stored. Recurve stores more than longbow, compound stores the most. That means that more energy is converted into the kinetic energy the arrow flies away with. The higher the kinetic energy the faster the arrow. So a compound bow with 30lbs and 28" draw shoots the arrow far faster than a longbow with 30lbs and 28" draw.

"(From pivot point to your fingers)" isn't actually quite right. It's pivot point to fingers plus 5/4" as far as I know. Depends a bit on what measure the producer uses.

Regarding checking carbon arrows - at the system I attend (Lorien Trust), they've moved away from checking the noise by the ear on the basis that if it does explode (very rare), it's best for that to NOT be by your face. We normally check by holding the nock & head, hold the arrow by our waist & gently twist. If it's going/gone, you'll feel a grinding pretty quickly and know it's bad. Otherwise, a good coverage of archery for LARP :)

I Haven't yet attended a Lorien Trust event so haven't been exposed to that good practice. It 100% makes sense and is a lot safer than having an arrow that close to your face. Thank you for sharing this and I'm going to give that method a try next time I do an arrow check ✔️ ✅️ 😀

One thing i'd point out: pick the arrow up by the head when it's from the ground. Avoids carbon fibre shards/splinters in the hand. Also! headshots not counting is definitely a common rule :D Also-Also. Poundage is the force required to draw the bow and not nessicarily the exact force that goes onwards. My bow at my full draw is about 27lbs. When tested at max draw, came out at 29lbs. All LARP i've heard of in the UK is restricted to 30lbs. Last things i'd add? If the bow limbs are cracked/damaged, absolutely do not string it. Risks collapse. Dryfiring can cause this damage.

the arrow you label as carbon at the start is glass i think, a lot of games dont allow carbon as they explode more
@MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide

Spot on and thank you. That is a very old arrow and one of the first I bought so I think it maybe carbon. But good spot, I was completely unaware of them being banned /not allowed. Every days a learning day :)

@@MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide if you care look up the exploded carbon pix tha you can see on the internet, they look gnarly, and when we tested them back in the day the way they fired shards of carbon when they broke made us ban them
@MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide
@MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide 2 года назад
@@mandalastudiosworkshop oh wow, I've had a read and look online. 100% agree with the ban, the injuries look horrible. There were loads of images of them exploding when fired as well. With age of some of my arrows ill just bin any I have left that may be carbon fibber, just not worth the risk. Once again thank you for the feedback and insight on this.

Thank you for saying that. I was 100% more nervous and my brain was racing thinking about what to say 😬. I felt the video was way to disjointed and I was rambling. But looking at the views this one is getting and the so far, lack of dislikes.I might make more like this in the future.

Found your channel by chance of Luck. Like and comment to push the YT-Alg - you rock Mike. + no headhits/shots at all - since 2004 in germany as far as i can tell. + you can sew the rubber flights to the wooden shaft and with a drop of glue on the sewing thread you are good to go. Cost is next to nothing, makes your flights real durable and recognizeable at the same time.

The flat face shape of arrowhead only works if it hits square. Hitting at an angle there's the corner. Bouncing delivers more momentum on impact. Coming to a dead stop delivers the least momentum.

Great job at summarize all the different topics to consider for larp archery! One thing that could be helpful could be to add time stamp to your video to help seeing what topics you cover ;)

Thank you for the feedback, I'll take a look at time stamping this one some time this week. Glad you enjoyed the video, is there any other subjects you would like me to cover?

@@MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide On our side, we plan to produce a video to inform our player about what are the best practice of firing arrow in a larp context. From a building, what if the target shows only his face under his towershield

I own an archery range and plan to organize some matches with LARP arrows in the future. Until now I have done pletny of shooting, I'm an instructor myself and we have a 3D archery range, but I have no experience with LARP at all. I would be interested in hearing recommendations. Like what would be a good group size? Security wise I would require safety glasses or painball helmets in addition to the safety tips for the arrows. Any other recommendations? What could be good match rules? Anything not obvious?

I have to ask if there is a limit as to what number of pounds you can use in LARP? I ask because my wife an I have 40lb bows that I bought us to use in Society for Modern Anachronism.
@MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide
@MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide Год назад
I believe its 28, but every system is different. It's been a while since I've been to an event and used a bow. (3 years now) but im confident that a 40 pound bow is a little high. Best advice I can give it ask the event organisers before booking your ticket.
