An interesting list of artists . This is a tough one because , like you , I listen to a wide variety of genres . Anyway , I will give it a shot . Here's my list in no particular order : The Beatles Jethro Tull David Bowie Genesis Elton John Neil Young Bruce Cockburn Pink Floyd The Rolling Stones Steely Dan I feel bad about not having a female vocalist in my list , so here's some artists that just missed the cut ( and on another day , might make the list ) : Sam Phillips The Pretenders Yes Santana XTC Roxy Music Stevie Wonder Bob Dylan Elvis Costello The Doors Deep Purple Bob Marley King Crimson Thanks !!!!!

Hi David! That Dylan box set looks heavy as you were reaching to lift it up. 😂 That’s a very nice looking Genesis set. I’m in full agreement on that being their best period. The Cure is another excellent pick. Throwing in some classical. Dire Straits…I have the discography. Again in agreement with you on avoiding those 2 Dire Straits songs. I wish I knew more about classical music. Need to expand my horizons. Hope you didn’t get gouged to severely for the Springsteen tickets. It was good to see you include some jazz with Miles Davis of course. Of any jazz artists in my collection, and there’s lots, Miles is the most represented. I have a few King Crimson albums but need to be in the mood as I’m not always a very prog rock guy. I would say that Genesis and King Crimson are my preferred bands of the genre. Very good video and quality T shirt too! ✌️
@davidatkinson-lifematters4826
Thanks Mike. That t-shirt is part of the Atkinson Summer Collection c.1988 😄 I got lucky with the Springsteen ticket. Very lucky. A lovely friend of mine invited me along after his daughter was unable to take-up her ticket, and he gifted me her ticket. We've got plenty of shared travel and gig history re Springsteen, and he's been incredibly generous to me over the years and this was the icing on the cake. Re. Crimson, I chose them because their output is so, so varied. Yes, it's mood music, and often difficult, but with only ten artists to live with, I figured there was much of their music to revisit!

Hi David, congratulations on your excellent choices! Interesting that you pontificated over The Cure vs. Depeche Mode. Both good choices for 80’s/90’s but I thought you might have gone for Simple Minds for that era. I did not know until recently when a vinyl aficionado friend of mine came to visit that I am apparently a bit of an Art Pop freak. Anyway, all the best and here are my top 10 that I could not be without. Each has a distinctly unique flavour & sound in my own judgement, as well as covering different eras: Fiona Apple Beethoven Blur David Bowie Kate Bush Genesis Goldfrapp Pink Floyd Lou Reed Roxy Music
@davidatkinson-lifematters4826
Hi Mike, I think, when it comes down to it, I really like only four or five Simple Minds albums - 'Empires', 'Fascination', 'Sister', 'New Gold Dream', and 'Street Fighting'. I just haven't put the effort into the later albums as yet. Lou Reed is a good one, although his catalogue is a bit short on spiritually-uplifting content!
@mike_burke
@mike_burke Год назад
@@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 The unpopular Real to Real is actually my 2nd favourite, after New Gold Dream. Which leads me onto Lou Reed and……yes you are certainly right…..I had not really thought about it before but I suppose I do like darker music, certainly dissonant and dramatic music* Anyway, cheers David, and up the Toon, you must be optimistic, hopefully 😃 *Venus in Furs belonging in my top 10 songs, for example. Hmm, top 10 dissonant songs, now there’s a thought……

@@mike_burke Did you see my video on Lou Reed and the 'New York' album, Mike? I have huge respect for him as an artist/poet and, despite his dark subject matter, he dis produce an uplifting winner once in a while. And yes, The Toon are looking good for 23/24. Lots of competition though, so I'm not taking anything for granted.
@mike_burke
@mike_burke Год назад
@@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 Of course I did David! Loved it, by the way. Always really enjoy your deep dives. I often find that counter-intuitively “darker” music can be strangely uplifting, much like poetry. Later Depeche Mode is not at all like Lou Reed, but can have a similar effect on me. Johnny Cash also comes to mind, during the American albums period. You should definitely explore that set of albums, if you haven’t already. I hope you win something under Eddie Howe before he ultimately and deservedly gets the England job. Hope your keeping well! Cheers. PS: A lot of people think of Lou Reed as arrogant, cranky, rude or whatnot. I see a different person. Thoughtful, caring, intelligent. He just does not suffer fools gladly. Bit like you and I maybe 😃
@davidatkinson-lifematters4826
@@mike_burke I won't disagree with a word of that. 'Dark' music is often cathartic and very satisfying. Those Cure albums, later DP (like you said), and the American series of ol' man Cash have a tone of gravitas and command respect, much more than his earlier albums (with some exceptions - e.g. Folsom). For years, I thought Lou Reed an asshole (despite admiring his music). Thinking about him and putting together than video changed my mind completely.

Great video, couldn't agree more regarding money for nothing and walk of life, hate those 2 tracks, communique and making movies are both classics. Most of my top 10 would come from the 70's, Zeppelin, skynyrd, floyd, genesis, eagles etc, but I'd definitely include Roddy Frame and Aztec camera, probably one of our most underrated singer / songwriters who never has got the credit he deserved.
@davidatkinson-lifematters4826
Isn't it amazing that those two Dire Straits tracks are dismissed by so many hardcore fans of the band? I wonder if Knopfler knows? Good shout Gary about Aztec Camera. Those first three albums are stellar, and it's sad that they're now long forgotten by almost everyone. I kind of lost touch with his stuff not long after he rebranded himself as a solo artist, but there's no doubt he's a gem.

Nice collection David. No van morrison? Springsteen stopped being good after Tunnel of Love. He had a brief renaissance with Magic in 2007, and Letter to You was a return to form, but the rest of his output has been way too inconsistent. Living on past glories. Still, those first 8 albums are definitely worth having on a desert island. Great that you enjoyed the concert too. Even at 500£ a ticket, he's still got it.
@davidatkinson-lifematters4826
Cheers David. I decided not to include Van because, unlike the others, his music gives-up its secrets very quickly. You know exactly what you're getting and he delivers it perfectly. I think you're being a bit harsh on Springsteen - 'Wrecking Ball', 'Tom Joad', 'Seeger Sessions', and his 'Live in NYC' are all excellent. 'Magic' would be up there, were it not for its poor sound production - side 2 has some brilliant songs on it though. As for Springsteen's ticket prices, there were outrageous and I was not intending to go. I was gifted a ticket. I'm a lucky fella.
@davidsmith9878
@davidsmith9878 Год назад
@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 Very lucky. But I stand by my assessment of his output over the last 30 years or so. I get what you're saying about Van Morrison but I like my musical heroes because, ultimately they kind of become your mates. Familiar voices guiding you through life, with all its inherent ups and downs. I would probably go with the reassuringly familiar for my top 10. Bruce for sure Steve earle because he's a southern bruce, but cooler. Sinatra Tony bennett Jayhawks. Most underrated band in the US Chet baker Jason isbell. He's the real deal Mecca, coz he's from Liverpool and he's unjustly maligned Ryan Adams Van morrison. Something like that. Anyway, thanks for the video and keep em coming
@davidatkinson-lifematters4826
@@davidsmith9878 That's a fine list too David. I love those first three or four Steve Earle albums, but lost touch with him after 'El Carazon'. Really like The Jayhawks too. During the nineties I was grabbed by the new Americana and I acquired 'Tomorrow the Green Grass' on cassette. Loved it. Got them all on CD or vinyl now. Based on your previous recommendation, I bought two of the Jason Isbell albums too. "Southeastern' and "Something More Than Free'. I can see, with your love of Steve Earle, why Isbell appeals. I've enjoyed listening to him so far, but haven't put him up on high just yet. And Ryan Adams, despite his damaged reputation, has produced some fantastic music. I though he was the nearest we were seeing to 'The New Bob Dylan'(!) - so prolific and the quality so high. I've yet to see him live, though, but always on the look-out.
@davidsmith9878

Yes, he can be inconsistent, but when he gets it right, he's incredible. Found innocent on all charges. Clearly, he's been a bit of a dick around women, but, how many of us men haven't been from time to time? I'm not condoning his sexism obviously, but he's effectively had his career cancelled. No record label and struggling to tour. Or even be heard. When you think what the likes of the stones got up to.... But different times I suppose

This is the sort of silly tning i think about if im going through s phase of insomnia. The trouble is that i then get interested in the challenge. 10 artists is tough, so i want to outline the categories I need to cover. Prog Art rock Blues/blues rock Punk/Indie/Hard Rock ie something with some energy Singer Songwriter Jazz Classic Rock I'm also going to need some female voices somewhere. Catalogue size and quality is clearly an issue that must be taken into account. Prog - Genesis Art Rock - David Bowie Blues & blues rock - The Rolling Stones Punk etc - need to think more Jazz - Charles Mingus Classic Rock - The Who Singer Songwriters - Van Morrison, Richard Thompson That's 8 already including my high energy placeholder and no female voices yet. This is tough as it means leaving out artists I love like Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, Jackie Leven, Supertramp, Rod Stewart & The Faces , Jess Roden etc along with some Chicago or British blues. Im leaving to think about three issues 1) My hard rock or punk choice. Deep Purple possibly or The Clash, but their catalogue is too short. 2) A female blues artist. Elles Bailey maybe, but I'm having a phase off her. When Rivers Meet would give me a very different sound. Perhaps the soul blues of Etta James. 3) A prog band with a female singer. This is likely to be a small catalogue band like Karnataka or Flamborough Head. Even smaller, Kaprekar's Constant. Perhaps i should take a risk with Mostly Autumn, even though i haven't heard many of the albums. Dammit. Ive just realised i don't have any room for soul and funk. No Otis, no Funkadelic. I'm not sure I want to live like this. I think I'd find it easier to find balance by picking 100 albums to listen to forever.

Just seen your comment Paul. Lots to digest there. I suspect our musical tastes have a big overlap. You probably haven't seen it, but I did a 'Best Female Singers' video a while back, and Etta James featured strongly. She was amazing. As for female-fronted Prog bands, I can't get past Renaissance. I have a few Mostly Autumn albums (on CD) are they're enjoyable. The guitar playing is prime David Gilmour, but the whole thing was just a little too bland for my liking.
@paulsimister944
@paulsimister944 4 месяца назад
@@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 I know what you mean about Mostly Autumn. That's why I thought there were a risk, but they have a deep catalogue and I'm thinking that the greater familiarity may make me enjoy them more. As I overlooked Floyd, the Gilmouresque guitar would be handy. Now that I've had more time to think about it, my female blues is probably between Joanne Shaw Taylor and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Purple for hard rock and the female prog vocalist is still troubling me. I might jump category a bit and opt for Kate Bush.
