The family of Katara and Aang as shown by The Legend of Korra Book 2, was a complicated one. Their three children, Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin endured quite a lot as children of not only The Avatar, but also, The Last Airbender, which would majorly impact their lives.

Guys, most of you including this video are missing a key point. Remember what the culture of Airbenders were when Aang was a child and the way they raised their children? It wasn't a 2 parent structure, you're all looking at this from your own cultural perspective. Airbenders raised children in a massive family unit, the blood parents didn't matter, the community took care of the children. Aang was raised this way therefore he isn't inclined to smother his children as a 2 parent household would. It's most likely that he saw an opportunity to revive his clan in his son, therefore he dedicated a ton of time to Tenzin as the hope of the Airbenders. Not because he loves him more than his other children. In a way I guess it is favoritism, but not in the way that you are all thinking in the context of a 2 parent household.

Yea but even so he looked up to his old master monk gyatso as basically a father figure. To think that he would neglect his own children especially Bumi who’s a non-bender makes no sense. He treated sokka fairly even though he was a non-bender. Even though he didn’t grow up in a traditional two parent household he still knew the basics of a family and even considered team avatar as family. Plus with katara coming from another broken household you’d think she would show Aang he can’t neglect his kids and focus on tenzin so much.

Miqueas Trejo I don’t think they neglected Bumi. Because of Tenzin and Kya’s bending, they gravitated to either Aang or Katara. Since Bumi was a nonbender it makes sense that he was neglected in this sense, but he wasn’t neglected entirely. Bumi’s initial problem is that he sees his own self as a failure to Aang (and I’m pretty sure Katara too) because he wasn’t a bender and his siblings came out as such, but that doesn’t mean that he was hated for it. Probably left out of things like both Kya and Bumi not traveling the world like Aang and Tenzin did, but he was definitely loved. It’s not in either Aang or Katara’s nature to treat anyone differently, and we can see that with Sokka. They weren’t the best parents, but you also can’t say that Bumi was neglected, he just felt like the odd one out.

I don’t think Aang neglected Bumi and Kya... he just favourited Tenzin, which is completely understandable even if morally questionable. Aang was the last of his people, arguably his biggest goal and desire in life was to bring back the Air Nomads, even more so than his desire to keep balance in the world. Tenzin was the only thing keeping the Air Nomads alive that Aang ever got to see, and he had to pass down everything he knew to Tenzin, all the bending techniques, their ceremonies and traditions etc. It’s no wonder that he spent more time with Tenzin.

They were literal children during the run of their series. We don't know what could have led to those things happening. I dont believe that Aang thought "oh these aren't airbenders so Im going to ignore them". People have flaws, even child protagonists grow up into imperfect adults. Aang died young compared to the others because of how much life force it drained to seal himself for 100 years. He had an airbending son and knew he had to pass on all he knew to this one child. Again, another Last Airbender. Of course he would have accidentally put more pressure and spent more time with Tenzin. It's okay to dislike that he did this, the series paints it as wrong, but a lot of people are saying it ruined the show or they don't consider Korra canon for it. That's silly, imo. Just because we don't like it doesn't make it bad writing. I appreciate it the look into the stress Aang must have felt, and we see it in Tenzin's insecurities

But ignoring he’s other children is hard to believe but I think he didn’t quite understand that. In the Avatar: The Last Airbender when Aang found he’s temple and the complete extinction of it he was mad and this wave of responsibility came upon him. I feel like he saw his youngest son as his first step towards that and seeing how he was very determined towards his goal, he drowned his child in all of this responsibility and frustration that was all Aang’s. I do agree that all of the children should of been involved in with the air bending culture. And Bumi even tho he was born a non-bender there are non-benders in every nation. I can only imagine what tbat must have felt like. I think his kids, when they were younger, felt the weight of having an a sentee father who had a clear favorite. Would not let him do so it’s not in her nature to let him do whatever he wants she was always the mother figure to him and always let him in the right direction sitting down telling him or if it was right or wrong. It’s just so unrealistic I really hate the legend of Korra just because it destroyed the whole show to me the characters don’t act the same. Of course they got some things right like Toft how she was very open with her child raising things because she didn’t wanna be anything like her parents however in the comics she did make up with her parents and I feel like she would be a lot more grounded after making up with her parents.

Siras 126 It actually is pretty plausible. He is the Avatar, so he probably couldn’t always be there for his family because he had to deal with different problems all over. And on top of that, it makes perfect sense that he favored Tenzin. Think about it, his entire culture, all the airbenders were slaughtered. And he always felt guilty for running away. So he sees Tenzin as his only hope of reviving a nation he lost. He had to teach him everything he knew. And lastly, Aang was 12 in the series, and he likely changed through his life. I know I'm late to the party here, but I feel like the portrayal of Aang and Katara is fairly realistic. Aang felt like he had a legacy to pass on so he had to spend more time with Tenzin. Katara probably saw this and tried to compensate by spending more time with Kya and Bumi. I think she would've understood Aang's need to train Tenzin so thoroughly, so she wouldn't have tried to force him to be with the other kids as much as it would cause him to become overworked and overwhelmed (he is still the Avatar, after all). It's an unfortunate series of events, but it lines up for their characters.

@@d.s169 I mean, Aang showing favoritism for one child more than others is pretty believable to me. It's most definitely something that does happen in most families, and for their last child to be an airbender, the baby? The last born are *always* the most adored by their parent's. The other kids never had a chance. We don't know what Aang is capable of. He was introduced to us when he was 12 (of mind) to 13-years-old. As a young adult, he may have developed an obsession with bringing an new airbender into the world, and because he knew only he could produce one, he may have undergone some great personal turmoil trying to come to terms with himself. If he showed GREAT favoritism for one child, I'm sure Katara tried making up for it in some way. Maybe. You also have to wonder if there was someone pushing him to produce an airbender and the pressure got to him. There's just too much time between The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra to know what happened and why things happened. But, yeah, some more information about their young adult lives would have been fantastic. Everyone would have wanted Aang and Katara's life together to be a happy one and for their children to be loved as equally as possible.

RANT TIME! I don’t think Aang was taking Tenzin on “vacations” (as Bumi described it), it was most likely air nomad teachings. Not to mention, Aang is still the Avatar and had the weight of his peoples future on his shoulders. So chances are, Tenzin unfortunately got dragged along on these Avatar duties since Aang was the only one who could teach him. Aang being Aang, probably tried to make these situations as bearable as possible for Tenzin, which is why he got to ride the elephant koi. I’m not saying Kya and Bumi’s complaints aren’t valid, but I feel like some people really exaggerated Aang’s parenting capabilities. I actually think it's more interesting by making the favourite characters not outright all-perfect. Think about it. None of our parents in the real world is perfect, even the very good ones get complained for favouritism by their children. Even my late dad, whom many people regarded as a good person and highly respected, fell short when it comes to showing no partiality to his children. This just show that parenting isn't easy, especially for Aang who wanted to rebuild his nation, at the same time has his duty as the avatar. That doesn't make him a horrible dad, it just makes him imperfect, which is very human. If the creators made him so perfect, it's not real anymore. I think people should see the imperfections happening in our own lives and in the people we loved before expecting an animated character to be perfect. it's also part of the joy, to love or to hate, otherwise, how boring it would be.

4 factors are neglected in this situation. •1) Both Bumi and Kya actually rejected Aangs teaching and failed to show interest in Airbending culture and heritage. Why would Aang then force his teachings upon his children that aren’t showing interest. •2) Aang had to be Tenzin’s master. He had to spend long amounts of time, years even to help the only other Airbender in the world to become a master in the art. •3) We don’t know what either Aang or Katara were like as parents interacting with their children. What we do know is that looking back at their family’s picture after their arguments, they come to conclusion that they were a happy family, bar not being perfect. •4) These criticisms come at a time of frustration with inflated opinions where Bumi and Kya criticise without acknowledgment of their roles in the situation, alongside inflated criticism of Aang where all the good both Katara and Aang did is not addressed.

Yeah, I think point #4 is particularly relevant to this discussion. People see the past through different lenses that aren't necessarily consistent with the actual reality. Considering that Aang really did have to put a lot of himself in the ONLY other airbender in the world, he probably did neglect his other two children somewhat (although definitely not maliciously), although the older two children would have gotten plenty of his time before Tenzin showed himself to be an airbender. Even though the older two didn't get as much attention later in childhood, I doubt Aang ignored them entirely, much less Katara. I also doubt that he really tried to make life miserable for Tenzin by being overly stern about the Airbending culture. Tenzin obviously placed a lot of pressure on himself, but that doesn't mean that Aang purposely guided him into such a mindset. Rather it is more likely that Tenzin was just very self aware about the fact that the future of the Airbenders was very much in his hands. No pressure or anything...

I agree with all of these points. Specifically to number 4 they were very upset which throws their interpretation of events into some disarray. As children we also feel things much deeper. This just leaves them with the passionate neglect they felt as children.

Bumi is allowed to feel those feelings but it doesn't take away that Aang and Katara did everything they could to provide for the kids' happiness. I've seen it more as they would like to be included in everything related to the Air Nomad tradition but there are just some things that Tenzin had to do on his own as an airbender. Not to mention, in Book 3, Kya did say "I could never keep those gurus straight, there were like a million of them", and "Remember that long, boring story of the guy who wouldn't eat?" LOL, pretty sure Aang tried to involve his kids in as much Air Nomad history and culture as he could, but there's only so much he could show them without needing them to be able to airbend. Yes, he placed a lot of burden on Tenzin since he was the only airbending child, but again Tenzin took on a lot of that burden himself. We are a product of the choices we make in life. Tenzin as an adult could have chosen to reject his air nomad root, but he didn't. He continued to embrace his responsibility to the air nomad culture even though it prevented him from being in touch spiritually, and he more or less is at peace with it by the time of Jinora's ceremony and the series' end.

Some words from the creators themselves in The Legend of Korra Book 2 commentary: - Mike: “To be clear, we were never trying to say that Aang was a horrible, terrible parent! It’s more about how Kya and Bumi interpreted Aang’s absence. Because he was busy, he was busy being the Avatar. It’s this natural thing where he ended up taking Tenzin around the world because he was the second to last airbender at the time and wanted to make sure his culture continued on. It came out of a place of trying to keep his culture going which was very important to him. Maybe he overlooked spending some quality time with the other kids at one time or another, but it doesn’t mean he was a deadbeat dad.” - Bryan: “Aang just had a hard time dealing with all his responsibilities”. With these words, as well as all the other information that has been revealed about Aang's parenting in related canonical materials (such as the comic Turf Wars, where Kya fondly remembers her father's unwavering support when she came out as homosexual), we can say with assurance that Aang was not a bad father. Was he perfect? Of course not. No father is. But the ultimate takeaway of the Civil Wars episodes was that, despite not being at all times 'fairy tale', Aang's family was happy and full of love.

I find it unrealistic that Aang would have ever been this extreme based on his own experiences. No, I don't think he was a perfect father, as I am sure that his duties as Avatar probably kept him away and busy most of the time. But there is no way that I think that he would have allowed that to cause him to exclude his children. He would have always looked for ways to spend time with them and he would have definitely included Bumi and Kya as part of his culture. If he could do it for strangers then why wouldn't he for his own children?

In your last video where you discussed the possibility that as the avatars reincarnate they become capable of handling the regrets of the previous avatar. Which is why I find it interesting that Aang never truely got to rebuild the air nation (which is something I am sure he regrets) but Korra's actions were able to restore the air nation and rebuild it in ways Aang could only dream of.
@Therealfrostflower
@Therealfrostflower 4 года назад
That is something I never considered. I also saw something about Korra's statue being the last one, her completing and begining and new cycle. Most of the Air Temples were damaged or changed greatly by the time Korra ended. With the restoring of the Airbenders, the building of new temples will be a more realistic goal. If there was only Tenzin and his family, Air temple island is the only place that would be needed, which could end in a similar way as the other temples. Her restoring the Air nation I feel is definitely apart of Aangs regrets, but it could also be because she was the last Avatar of her cycle. There needed to be atleast some sense of balance again before an entirely new cycle, atleast in my opinion. The connection to Aang can also contribute to her decision to put her life on the line for them, not just her duty as Avatar. He would've done anything to save his family and regrets leaving before having the chance, the cycle continues to fulfill the regrets he had as you said. She brought back balance among the bending arts, and protected the air nomad culture at the end, before the new cycle begins.
@jayvewhite92
@jayvewhite92 4 года назад
@@Therealfrostflower I didn't even think of that and your right if Korra was meant to be last avatar in her cycle it makes sense that she would have to establish a new balance in the world before the cycle begins again so that when there would be ineveitably be a new avatar of the air nomads it would not be aang reincarnating into one of his desecndants.but keeping in mind the original idea of the regret I also find it interesting that Roky regretted not being able to stop Sozin, the fire natiom and prevent the war but aang was able to defeat ozai,make peace with the fire nation and other nations as well as end the war.

Even though they dedicated themselves to the of the world, they also keep in mind the growth of the human part of themselves. Makes you think what will play into the next Avatar's growth based on what we see with Korra (so far). I'm like a year late to the party, but if there's a big a gap as we think there is between the kids (about 5 years each), then by the time Tenzin was old enough to do things like giant koi surfing, Bumi probably would've been a late teenager. I have a little brother 11 years younger than me, he has gone on vacations with my parents without me or my older brother. But in turn we went on vacations without him, before he was born. I'm curious about the years before Tenzin, because I can imagine that Aang was super busy building Republic City and all that, so he was probably neglectful there. I also got the feeling from those episodes that Kaya and Bumi didn't really blame Tenzin for getting so much attention - they kind of understood the stakes and the pressure. And not gonna lie, I don't think I'd want all that pressure on me. I love knowing that these characters didn't grow up to be perfect parents or perfect adults. It humanizes them. I say the same about Luke and Han and Leia in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Sometimes, people don't live happily ever after with nonstop sunshine and rainbows. We put them on such pedestals, but they're all flawed characters. And I'm glad to be allowed to see that.

If anything the favoritism makes sense, tenzin is the sole surviving airbender after aang dies. Aang needs to teach him an entire culture and bending before he passes. I’m sure Aang loved all his children immensely, but for the sake of an entire race and culture Tenzin was favored.
@maxreagan6618

also I’m pretty sure Aang knew that his time in the iceberg had made his life expectancy much shorter and being the avatar meant he always had a target on his back, so teaching Tenzin airbending had to be a giant priority for him before he died. I think Kya and Bumi loved him and most of the irritation they express in Korra is unresolved grief over his death, and all the siblings sort out their differences in the end.

After aang and katara got married, there's a section in the comics where aang shares the ways of his people with this fan club that admired the air nomads and their ancient ways- I forget the name of the fan club. But it was at this moment where we saw aang share the ways of his people to a group of non airbenders. Then suddenly that side of Ang is completely written off when he becomes a parent. I find it hard to believe the Aang would grow up and do the opposite of what he demonstrated in the comics in the LOK. 🤔 Therefore I believe that the writers of Lok wrote away this loving trait of aang because they simply wanted to. And the fact that the writers in the Lok are different from the writers of the original Avatar series reinforces this point.

The way they depicted 'Daddy Ang' just felt off to me. From a realism perspective it was understandable and plausible, however the way the show ended I imagined Ang as being more mindful of his past I guess and more grateful to have finally gotten what he really wanted in the end; which was just to be with Katara and be able to choose his own path for real without anything life or death hanging over his head. I guess I imagined him to be the one who would retain at least a bit of his care free nature especially with his kids. I feel personally he would've just enjoyed having a kid as well and that he would trust in the Universe that more Airbenders would rise. Idk it just seemed like he gained so much knowledge throughout the show for so little of it to be present in his future life. Hope that made sense lol. In the end I still love Ang always, i always connected with his character and compassionate nature.

Hearing about how Ang was as a father was surprising but it made sense. I think Ang suffered from the amount of pressure or close to the amount of pressure his son did. They both had to saddle the rebirth of an entire culture on their backs, I dont think Ang neglected his other kids intentionally it just so happened to happen. Ang knew once he passed which was unfortunate for him to be at a fairly young age, that if he taught his son nothing about Air nomad culture, he to would have failed as the avatar and the last air bender. I do not think Katara was quiet in that, I imagine there bing a couple of arguments. I dont think it requires explanation about how they would happen and why Latara must have if not later on stayed quiet. I think Ang regrets his parenting much like Toph as she told her daughters that as long as they did not hate her she was happy. I imagine Ang must have felt the same way, but having to say they to your children knowing how awful you were as a parent must be extremely painful. I know what it is like to shoulder a huge familial burden and pressure and it not easy. Knowing what my parents went through I can see both sides of it, its hard on everyone. It was really interesting to see how Ang had turned out as an adult. As well as all of the team Avatar. I wish we could see more though more so on screen but I will for sure look for those books.
