41:51 what an amazing quote. “shit starts to happen that you just can’t deny.” i’m so impressed by this guy, there was an insane amount of care and thought put into this. keep on rocking mongster
The Last Beta Player is my favorite Minecraft video to come out in recent memory. I’ve really wanted to share it with my partner, but I know that as a modern player they won’t resonate with a lot of what makes it so perfect For the last few months, I’ve been gradually sharing fun facts or videos about beta Minecraft with them. I’ve done this slowly enough to seem nonchalant and unrelated to anything specific I feel that the ideal way to experience the film is to have enough background knowledge to rationalize each scenario as a glitch and maintain plausible deniability. It creates a extremely suspenseful and immersive experience, and I hope I can enable them to experience it as I have You’ve created an amazing work of art, and I can’t wait to share it with them months from now
You should totally do more stuff like TLBP, doesnt even have to be eerie or horror-ish, just videos that are super atmospheric and set out to invoke certain feelings. Would be wonderful
I really enjoyed the style of the video. Right away at the start it felt different and unique. It gets really close to emulating the forlorn and wild west-y feel of old minecraft (old internet in general really). It was also something that really resonated with my specific type of horror which is the implied and silent stuff. It hits the nail on the head with how good horror gives no good answers and leaves the important stuff to the imagination of the viewer, sticking in your head a lot longer.
Ironically, I found this at 3am on my feed, not knowing what to expect, but hoping for it to be a silent, calm scary experience. I'm really glad you went through with this project. It's amazing and does a great job at translating both the peaceful nostalgia and the sheer horror of early minecraft's singleplayer
I totally didn't realize how few locations are actually seen over the course of the film. You did an excellent job recontextualizing each area from scene to scene, so every time we go somewhere, it feels new.
gathered my roommate to watch it on the big tv and we had a fun time just bonding over super faded memories of old minecraft, sometimes it’s crazy hard to tell apart what’s misremembering information and what’s real features that have since been removed or changed
I believe I recall in the comments of the original film, you said there wouldn't be a sequel, but I'm curious to know if you have considered making something akin to a spiritual successor? You definitely have a knack for this type of horror, and hearing your thought process behind it has only reinforced my belief in that. Regardless of the genre/medium, I'm excited to see what else you create in the future!
i don't have much to say about the film other than that it was brilliant and it captivated me the whole way through. something i wanted to add was just that i think it's really cool how you added captions throughout this video, thanks!
As someone who also has a video game machinima making passion, and also makes my own films (In GTA), I can only imagine how difficult yet rewarding this was to make. You did a wonderful job with the story telling and you should definitely be proud of your work!
This video made me jump quite a lot when I initially watched it, the intentional and unintentional scares felt natural (if that makes any sense) I hope you make more videos like these, especially the horror kind in the future
when you watch your friends video while fishing i thought it was because you were looking up stuff about beta minecraft to figure out what was going on
To be honest, it was one of best horrors i ever seen. Ir reminds me how i actually felt first time playing this game as kid, friends were telling scarry stories about their experience and something like that was playing in my head as imagination what could happen. But this? This one was deep. I enjoyed it whole time. From start to end. You and Dialko, another YT channel are reason i play beta agin. Thank you. Edit: Dialko is here in comments. WOW! Edit after edit: and i was like "why is that voice in phone so familiar?" And you actually used Dialko's video about spooky stuff in old minecraft.
I know this video is several months old and you probably won't see this but I had a question. At the point where you are going to and from the hut on the ice you can hear what sounds like footsteps on the ocean floor beneath you, was that intentional? Because to me it really added to the idea that David is getting stalked and his pursuer is lurking right beneath him the entire time he thinks he is safe. Great video by the way, really inspirational.
So no it’s not intentional, but it’s likely what you heard were squid. Squid still had a walking sound when they were against the ground in this version. Thanks for enjoying it!
It's good to see a new video from you! I loved The Last Beta Player and I loved Dialko's video about Minecraft being kinda sppoky too. Dialko's video was one of those that I watched and then the next day I just again because there was really something about it that struck me too.
Yes! I loved the original video and I'm excited to get some insight on your thoughts regarding it! Also, I think that you are entirely justified in calling it a short film, as it certainly felt like a cinematic experience.
Oh I loved that! Got immediately hooked on right after you said about you being a college student and studying filmmaking. It actually boosted the value of the whole commentary. It’s nice of you to break down the project and describe it with so much details. I’m happy for you for being able to tell us what matters to you. The best things in life are those that done with passion. And I enjoyed the film and the commentary. Great job!
I really like these videos overall with the kinda horror short film thing going on and the commentary was a nice touch to how it was all made. As someone interested in trying to make short films its given me some great insights and possible inspiration. Overall very cool videos mongster!
didn’t see the original video till now but definitely the best creepy related minecraft video I’ve seen, hard to explain but it doesn’t do too much. it’s very simple and effective
One thought about the modern players being confused. You could have introduced the concept of click mining with a tree. mine some leaves by holding and then mine some more with clicking
That audio David is listening to in the beginning comes from a real video??? I assumed you made it yourself as an overblown parody… I suppose there goes my theory about a thematic parallel between “world border challenge” and the mysteriously oppressive fog
Great video! Unfortunately, however, my perception of you being a genius with your spooky scary short film and your wholesome chungus Minecraft channel has been completely eradicated. I thought you were professional. I saw how popular The Last Beta Player was and I guessed that you had an entire film team and the best equipment in the film industry. It was The Last Beta Player, for Notch's sake! When I clicked on this video, I thought it was so cool to see you talking, but my day was instantly ruined when I saw those Beats by Dre headphones. I thought you were a professional! Unironically though the video isn't bad
